Well everyone, its that time again. First, I would like to thank the participants of the Fantasy Weapons Challenge. Some amazing images there. Thanks for giving it a go yall.
As for me, sorry for the delay. I had the most terrible drama show with my computer yesterday (more like all week). But alas, all is well and I am back on track. Never fear!...MNC is here!...and what are we doing?

user_image-1060700582lfr[1].jpg

Thats right. Its time to get some good ZSphere practice in here. Plus, with all the excitement about the new ZBrush release and its abilities, practicing making figures with adaptive ZSpheres can only help. Don't forget about Mentat7's Bodyworks thread (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=011878). Not only is that a great reference but I believe he also links to some videos by our WETA friend, Ambient Whisper. Great references both those guys. :tu: I will also try to put more reference here as well and give all the help, crits, and comments I can. Also, here is an Adaptive ZSphere Creature (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=010769&p=) I am still tweeking. There is some hand info in there by Pix too.

Okay, time for the guidelines.

:b3:Must be a new model. No recycling! I can't stress this enough. Start from scratch yall. Practice makes perfect.

:b3:Must be made with the ZSphere tool. We are going to try and focus on low poly adaptive skinning. Try to include hands, feet, fingers, and toes (if they have them...MWOAHAHAH!).

:b3: Post shots of the Zif(Zsphere) tool, and the skinned version next to it. Posting poly counts would be good too. If you don't know how to figure this out in ZB, all you have to do is hover the mouse cursor over the smaller preview of the tool in the tools palette and it will tell you. :tu:

:b3: Extended detail modeling is optional. We are concentrating on good zif construction and form but for the more advanced users...Do it to it baby! ;)

:b3:Make whatever you like, Mosters, Orcs, Goblins...just try to keep a more humanoid structure for now. Though if you feel you can handle a dragon or giant bug or something, then go for it! :)

Okay yall, that is it. The only other thing is that at the end of this challenge, We choose someone to pick the Next MNC topic. Kinda like a reward for excellent achievement. Only thing about this is you have to attend the IRC chats so we can choose someone. Of course, if nobody shows up, we will do it in here. Come on in though. We have tons of fun in there. It isn't just tech-talk.

Okay, thats it.
As always, Good luck, Have fun, and Happy ZBrushing!

wow this is a challenge topic to my taste. i do love z-spheres. here is the beastmaster. just adaptive skinned, not modeled yet. i first want to make him a beast, he can take care of....

and a little tip for z-posings : sometimes it is difficult to rotate about a specific z-sphere, since it is "covered" by a "fat" z-spheres. in this case put the size (in the modifiers above the preview) down to 20 or 30. after rotating you can put it back to 100. this size slider does not change the model, just how the z-spheres are presented.

having tons of fun with z-spheres. :D made a couple of critters, but i think those two here are the best out of the horde. the design of this one was based on a nightmare i had recently...

i think, i will take this beast for the beastmaster to care of, its not really lowpoly, but i hope thats ok for the challenge.

Greetings once again,
MTB I love the way you think man, I was just starting my character when I saw your thread, so its great timing.
Here is what I've done so far, the character will have no hands instead huge crab like jaws on each arm, acting also as huge hammers to knock his attacks with ::

THUNDER
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200308/user_image-1060854242iml.jpg

There are 30 Spheres all up and 760 polies. I have tweaked only alittle to get him to this stage.

I was really surprised , once again, at what z-spheres are capable off. I mean this rough outline of my character would have taken ages in another package and less then 1 hour.
My idea was initially to reach this stage and take the model back into maya for futher topology and planal refinement but zb did such a good job I think its going to be an all zb affair :)

thanks again

Kircho

Awesome models guys!

Kokoro: Geez man, what do you eat before you go to bed. :p

Andreseloy: Low-poly is anywhere from 5 to 5000 polygons (not ZSpheres). Adaptive skinning is perfect for this but just remember that the density setting affect this grealty. A setting of 1 will make it look like it was built with cubes. Density 2 sub-divides this one. Density 3 subdivides it again and finally one more time with 4.

Kircho: Really awesome man! Would love to see the extended modeling when you get to it!

As for me, I am making some characters for a friend so that too is perfect timing. I should be making them tonight. That is if I can get out of wings. I am loving it too much! Nothing can fill Z's place though...don't worry..lol.

Keep'em coming yall!

My kind of stuff.
Some very good entries so far!
Andres, Nice job... unique.
Kokoro, Quite imaginative work on all of them... I especially like the minotaur, well done!
Arfgraf, Cute mouse, nice job!
Kircho, Developing quite nicely, I can only imagine what is yet to behold!

whaaa! terrfico entries everybody! Pus, those spiraled drooltentacles are megacool, kokoro, same goes for the clothes :tu: :tu: :tu: - and i love how everybody did the hands/toes/whatever. as i still cant figure out how to do more than three fingers  (but those zsphereshots are quite instructive) i forgot about the humanoid thingie and went for a basic lowlowpoly four legger:

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200308/user_image-1060875514mma.jpg

clockwise: zsphere, adaptiveskin density one (after having done a few tiny editmove adjustments while in preview mode), the before adaptive skin after a few divides and editing turned into an undetailed dachshund like thingie, blocky unified skin done from lowpoly adaptive one.

Not sure how much time I am going to be able to put into this. I have a lot of commitments going on right now and several more waiting on the sidelines. So here is my first phase. The Sphere-Wraith. No real modeling has been done yet. Just Zsphere work and some vertices pushed around a bit.

very interesting entries. great challenge.

mentat these are great. i do love both with a slight preference for your first. i see you make the zspehere for the knuckels even bigger. i will try that too, mine are relatively small.

juandel, very cute puppet, and very low poly count. great.

SOME GREAT MODELS THERE FELLAS..I should say i think the thread creator said martin krol works for wetta..i think you have him confused with sombody else... been on his site a while ago and it said he is looking for work...just thought id clear that up..or im i wrong martin :) ??

Oh man I really like that one!!!

Okay, I am wicked inspired now! :tu:

Made this in about an hour.
A little high in the poly count. I am going to have to change the mesh density and redo the preview modeling but oh well.
That is another thing I wanted to practice...modeling in preview mode. Considering the workflow of the next version Thats only if Displacement maping doesn't change everything... :D
Anyway, going to start something else.
Must get sleep first!

Well, here's my effort. I haven't used zifs in quite a while and I wish I wasn't so pathetic at doing hands. I just can't seem to get the zifs and polys even.
Anyway, it's got 1244 polys. Just a suggestion....maybe the next challenge could be to develop your character further.

"Tootsie the Omnivore" -- 67 zifs -- sorry, I was offline and didn't remember the guidelines and OF COURSE I didn't save the z-tool to redo it with adaptive skinning instead of unified (31360 polys)

Inspired by Ron's headless creature above, I was trying to make a neckless critter that would eventually have its mouth right in front of the stomach :D

Obviously I need to learn more about how to get the skin to wrap as desired ...

This character has a nice mesh. :tu: I don't think it's nose is working to good for him though. He has a great amount of possibility though.
Sorry I have not taken place with the last two challenges, but I used Ziffs alot, and lately all my models I create with them are starting to look the same :( I would rather box, nurb model for a little longer to get a good change of pace. :)

Mahlikus The Black

His nose is his eye..lol.
Its cool though. ;)

I hear you on the zifs part. I too was having the same problem. But after doodling a while and having things like models here at ZBC as a good source of inspiration and guidence...I feel more comfortable with them. Plus, yesterday I found out some pretty cool tricks. I am going to try and finish up an annotated Zscript on these Zif Modeling tricks. How to keep a clean adaptive mesh. Tips on membrane usage and how to make effective joints. Just my take on things like that. Its not the way but a way.

Great to see so many fertile (and febrile?) imaginations at work :)

Here's a contrary devil at folly for a Bosch inspired picture. Looking for reference I happened upon Cioli's Il nano Morgante, which I ripped off badly - hope the copyright has expired

Fraid I find it impossible to resist the temptation to hit the divide button, and used the low poly model just to define volume.

After some careless selective dividing and hitting the poly limit, the mesh on this one is really messy in certain places. I'm also unhappy with various bits so I may unify skin it and then work the detail again - either that or wait for the next version, when I can throw a coupla mil more polys at it :D

so many wonderful entries already, and still a lot of time to go....

i worked on the beastmaster, which i started on page 1 of this thread, where you can see the z-spheres and the adaptive skin. i changed his pose slightly. then i subdivided once to model details like his mouth with gums, folds and fingers, mainly. as i like the character i thought i could try to get some texturing skills as well. for the leather of his shoes i first colored in shades of brown, and then with the shading enhancer brush and an activated stencil, which showed the leatherstructure (this comes from a texture within zbrush), i moved the stencil into place and just painted over the stencil with low intensity and the structure pops up. i did the same for his trousers (i used a digital image of one of my worn yeans ;) ).

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200308/user_image-1061385206rob.jpg

and since i liked how the texture turned out, i made a little scene with him. the axe is a simple z-spheremodel, the background is made by slapping digital photos onto the plane, and using that as alpha too, inflating and smoothing a little. very fast done. ( i hope the image is not too dark on pc)

this is my new one but I hope I would have more time to spend on ZB for the rest of the week. For the next step I'd like to do a landscape with a cartoon style of course i Know it's not the subject of this challenge but this would help me to do a good image.
Perhaps i'll do a more detail character.

Inspiring work on this thread.
Gwot, stressing Zsphere to the maximum, nice work (great hand technique).

Bonecradle, nice jiggly bits. Heh heh.

Here is a little mod on the hippo-ish. He's now a flying hippo-ish. Took the lo-res version and added eye/nose/jaw polys in maya then brought him back into Zbrush to detail for about 45 minutes. Great app. Fun to work with.

Bonecradle: That is very funky dude! Nice & refreshing approach.

BigMike: Very very nice!

Kokoro: That is way cool. I really like the facial texturing. I am not too sure about the green and pink colors though.

Mik: Great go at it bud! You may want to change the resolution setting on your foot sphere to avoid that bulb look.

Ramses: That is very neato. I like the pos and the setup of the image.

GWOT: What can I say? Stunning ZIF work. How long have you been working with ZIFS again??? The pose is superb! I never thought to put a piece of armor on the zif like you did with the shoulder bit. I must try that!

Deepsea: I absolutely love that Hippofly creature!! A lot of whimsy and cool looking form!!

Gwot
08-20-03, 01:32 PM
LOL! That Hippofly rocks deapsea! =D
Thanks for the comments again guys. Its so easy to get inspired by all the great works posted in here.

Mentat: I just wanted to use all the features available within zspheres to see where it could go. The sword, staff, barrel and shoulder plate are all segmented from the main body. I was surprised at how well they worked... though I don't think I'd ever want to detail a model with all those subgroups. Fun experiment though =]

Boy Gwot, your really spankin that Zif-ass! Awesome buddy! :tu: :tu: :tu: I too have been experimenting with detached Zifs. With little success though. Man, would I like to get my hands on your zif model of that bad boy. Speaking of hands, the mesh gen on them are awesome. Did you do any preview tweeking?

Ogre.zip (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200308/user_file-1061409805baw.zip)

Enjoy =]

there is a slight problem with the pinky on those hands, and the finger spread is too close to the wrist but I found with that particular setup I could easily tweak the mesh to fix it when skinned so I settled on that config. I messed around with a few others but this one seemed to give the best results.

Mahlikus: nope didn't touch a single vert on this one. Though that isn't to say it isn't needed. I'm fixing it up in lw before I detail it.

I've been playing around with the membrane curvature at 100, after trying to figure out how BigMike made that stomach and pelvic region blend so nicely. And from there, things started to get fun.

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200308/user_image-1061417934nut.jpg

What's cool is that I haven't tweaked the final mesh yet at all. What you see here is still just adaptive skinning.

That said, I don't think you're going to learn anything from staring at this image. Too much wierdness behind the scenes, really. So, here's the ZTool if you'd like a closer look (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200308/user_file-1061418330fya.zip). :D

ctrl-z: yeah I found the same thing when I was working with zifs too. The Ogre.zip I posted will show that I worked with membrane at 100 as well. Though I have done a couple of other meshes with it at various settings depending on my needs - it works very well in troublesome areas like hips and shoulders and hands.

Alrighty Trout boy :p ...two things:

In Pix's Dino walk cycle thread, he posted this...

Furthermore, any time during the modeling/texturing process, you may move ZSpheres to a new location to gain easy access to other areas of the mesh which may be blocked by these ZSpheres (such as moving the arms further away from the shoulders to gain full, unobstructed access to the chest).

Second, what is the membrane setting on that bad boy?

No preview editing here...it is just plain zif work.

Mike the membrane curvature is set to 100. I remember what Pix said about moving the spheres and such for editing in the next version. What is concerning me is trying to move all the "armor" stuff with the body parts since it isn't attached to the same links as the arms, legs, etc. An animation nightmare to be sure! :D

oh mentat, yes that really great. but should be a texturing nightmare, in case you try ;)

you are right about the green and pink, was in a strange mood when i chose those, but then next day, i could not change because of auv tiles. it was so much drop and pick with tm, that i did not want to do it again, just to change color. is there a simple way to do so ?

mtb, yes, i definitely would like to extend the challenge, as the next days i will not be near zbrush, so cannot try to catch up mentat. ;) i mean there is no hope to come close, but would be fun to try.

could not resist to zspheres after reading bonecradles tut.

my big thanks go to bonecradle, who lifted with his tut my emotional blinders wrt the x-res, y-res and zres sliders. these make it infact possible to make with zspheres more mechanical type objects like this crazy wagon. (sorry, it does not fit the topic really and has to many polys ...)

Hi Kokoro,

I haven't tried this yet but I have been thinking about it. Try opening the texture in Photoshop and converting the colors to Indexed Colors. Then do a color adjustment on the Greens and then the Reds (Pinks). You may also try selecting by color and adjusting that way. Not sure how difficult it would be but it may be worth a shot.

I believe they're done by putting an attractor sphere at the ending of a Zsphere , it tends to flatten the end. In this case a big sphere with half of it flat :p

Mentat7
08-23-03, 02:15 PM
Actually Namek is close but that is not how they are done on this zif. I created a sphere then another one on the end of it and moved it inside the first one so it subed it out. It is similar to using an attractor sphere but there are subtle differences. It just depends on what you are doing and if you are using membrane curvature or not. Below is an example of the different modes and their effects. Notice the the manner the mesh is generated in each example.
