Anyone care to guess where I am going with this WIP??? I have never used a preliminary sketch for a project, but I thought this one would be complicated by the end, so I figured I needed some pre-planning.

***I need some advice. Which Dorothy should I use? The original, or the "softer, kinder, less stressed out" Dorothy, as Stonecutter has suggested? Personally, I kinda like dorky Dorothy. She seems very much like a little farmgirl.

well if I had the Courage to have a Heart and use my Brain I would say we are on our way to the Emerald city via the yellow brick road..... ;)

And you would be right (of course) my friend! Here is the first head test for this image. It is little Dorothy. I'm probably going to do her hair much better, but as I said, this is a test shot.

OK, one more quicky. Darn, Zbrush is addictive. I am off work tomorrow, so I am letting myself stay up. Here is the head test for the Cowardly Lion.

Slosh this is going to look awesome my friend! I can't wait to see the final pic! One word of advice concerning the Tin Man...don't make the metal too shiny. It's ok to give it specularity...just move the specularity graph over to the left so it isn't high gloss. If I remember correctly the Tin Man looked like he was made from muted tin. Great work!!!!

Beautiful so far Slosh...I predict many late nights on this one. :D

Slosh
06-05-02, 08:29 AM
Well, the Tin Man will be next, and thanks for the advanced suggestion Mentat. I would have to agree, if he is too shiny he would not fit in with the rest of the characters, either. After all, he is not the Silver Man or the Chrome Man. It's gonna be tricky, though.

The piece is looking like it has great potential...I think Dorothy could use some work...She looks a little tired and aged to me, and could use some 'softening'..The lion however looks absolutely perfecto!!

Well, it's your call dude, but I think your second one will work better. I think the first one wouldn't 'fit' as well with the lion for instance, and would cause what I call 'dissonance' in your finished piece...
The softer look will be easier to match to your other characters...
You have me intrigued with the quality of modelling and concept you've shown so far!
:tu: :tu: :tu:  :) :tu: :tu: :tu:

Slosh...add more freckles to the second, softer
Dorthy, make her a little happier looking, and 'You're off to see the Wizard'.
;) Cheers.

   whoooah! thats a lovely start into a fantastico project, Brian! hey, you can exchange her looks at the very end as well, no need to do a casting like in hollywood inside the z! :D i LOVE the hair you did for the 2nd one!

I agree. With a few more freckles, the second one is the way to go. Looking good!

Man, this is hard! Dorothy is coming along. I obviously have to add her ruby slippers, her hands, a basket of some sort, and there are seams to smooth and her shoulders need work, but what do you think so far? (Background is temporary of course)

It looks like you got a composite of the two Dorothys in here...Whatever, it works! This is going to be fabulous, Bud!!

OK, here is another update. I haven't yet decided whether to give Tinny a human-like face, or something more mechanical. I know we are all accustomed to the Jack Haley version from the movie, but I'm thinking Frank L. Baum had another idea. 121 always welcome.

I'm probably one of the few people on earth who has never seen the Wizard Of Oz, so I'm wide open to anything you come up with!!
And this guy already looks good with the beginning of the texture you've showed..

06-08-02, 07:52 PM
Never seen the Wizard of Oz? Your bio says you are from British Columbia, but last time I checked, that was still on this planet. LOL...You are the one who mentioned being mindful of the Tin Man's specularity. How do you think I did? BTW, he is finished now, I just didn't want to post yet another update. I will wait until after the next character is finished. Lion is next, I think.

Stonecutter
06-08-02, 08:04 PM
Well, Brian, this should really freak you out...
The last movie I saw in a theatre was Dustin Hoffman, in 'Straw Dogs' and it pissed me off so much I never went back! :D

(And I think it was somebody else who mentioned the specularity, but in my opinion, this is perfect...You don't want him looking like chrome, but you also don't want him looking like galvanized metal either... ;) )

Slosh
06-08-02, 09:04 PM
Oops, you are correct. It was Lonnie that mentioned the specularity.

Was it the movie "Straw Dogs" that pissed you off, or the theater experience?

Stonecutter
06-08-02, 10:15 PM
It was the movie...The guy was a dink... ;)
Sicilian blood, what can I say, Dude?

Great update Slosh, Looking forward to see the next update...... or will it be the final image? ;)

06-09-02, 12:07 AM
The final image is a long way off, I think. I'm not as good at whipping out images as some members, so each character is taking a long, long time. But here is my last update for the night. The Tin Man is finished, and The Cowardly Lion has been added. Next step, The Scarecrow. (Ironic that he was the first of Dorothy's friends, and the last one for me to work on).

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1023606407iza.jpg

Of course, everybody needs hands, but mine are going to come at the very end, because I am not looking forward to it at all. :td:

Stonecutter
06-09-02, 12:44 AM
All three of these characters are great, and take it from me...It's best to take all the time it requires, rather than rushing it...
You'll produce the best possible result, and learn all kinds of new things along the way...
A wonderful process to watch, and already impressive results...I really like the lion, I have from the start, but the tin man and Dorothy are all consistent with him in quality...Fine work! :)

:tu: :tu: :tu:  :tu: :tu: :tu:

If I was to offer a 121, it would be to shorten the tin mans' torso a bit, and lengthen his legs...I think the proportining would work better... ;)

banez
06-09-02, 04:21 AM
yeah lengthen his legs and add her little dog

bad spelling i know LOL ToeToe.

Wow!!! Great Tin man, in fact all their faces have great character. Excellent :tu: Maybe you did the Lion first for the courage to do this project! The tin man second for some heart to continue and now you need the brains to complete the dreaded HANDS !!!! :D

Ron Harris
06-09-02, 07:38 AM
