Monday Night Challenge
First off, there are no winners and no losers. This is not a contest. It's a chance for everyone to take one idea and see how many different ways it can be done. A chance to share tips.
Each Monday night (in irc chat. Server - irc.sorcery.net port 9000 room zbrush3) the person who issued the challenge the week before, selects a new person to come up with a theme… random choice, picking a name out of a hat, throwing a dart whatever. It's not decided by who did the best picture (that keeps the playing field level for all.)
For those who might not like that only people who can get in irc can get the chance to choose a theme, We're sorry, but it was decided that it was the only way to ensure that a theme would be announced that night. Also, it's good to discuss a theme with the group to work out the details.
Note: if for some reason the person who's to select the new person doesn't show up, a name will be drawn. (This is to make sure there is no hold up on the challenge. This also ensures no one person can derail that week.)
Everyone is encouraged to participate. Give a quick description of what you used to create the image… or a detailed indepth lesson is most welcome, but not mandatory. This is to be fun, not hard work.
ok with that out of the way.....our new person to put out the challenge idea of the week is from MTB aka Mahlikus the Black
:b4: Mike chose a magical scene for the challenge.
:b4: Male or female character performing magic.
:b4: The person can also be a demon form also.
:b4: Magical Imagery, maybe figures or still life, backgrounds optional
So get to waving those Z wands and post your creations here.
Thanks to Pixolator, we will now have a gallery. If you want your image included add [GalleryEntry] to your image tag.

:b3: Background filled with free desktop wallpaper from the Bethesda Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind website (used for this test only - needed something to show distortion of Dragon Breath - notice the heavily distorted blue-white flame on the right side behind the Dragon Flame).
:b3: Zsphere Dragon head.
:b3: Transparent Dragon's Breath created with the Pixolator Clone Brush method, and modified with the Smudge, Eraser, and Bump brush, using the SprayBrush stroke.
:b3: Cone used for Transparent Breath was deformed and placed using a Flame material.
:b3: Same Cone used for Flame was placed using a Smoke material and rotated/scaled.
:b3: Smudge, ShadingEnhancer, and Simple Brush used to blend Fire and Smoke, increase intensity of Fire and Shadows, and add and enhance highlights to existing shapes in the background plane.
:b3: P.S. Glow lights and a Point light -- just one light at full intensity was not enough -- placed in Dragon's mouth. No other lighting used. GI settings were 6 rays and GDI set to 100, with Shadows ON at full intensity and ZMode ON.
:b3: P.P.S. I could have used the Blur Brush to good effect, but I totally neglected to try it out at any point.

Question:
I am assuming that this must be 100% ZBrush. No use of tools brought in from other sources. Is that correct?
Thanks

Here's a basic start on one of the characters for mine. It doesn't look very magical yet, but it'll make more sense when I add more to it. :)

Very impressive images !
Mik you should do more of these type of images.
This is a great challenge, I think there will be a lot of interesting pics soon!
But Jay, Does the light on the face come from the stone :qu: I would not know how one was to adjust the materials for this effect.

This is a test using a POSER female as a test body for my first scene...the rest of the scene is done entirely in Zbrush...Z-bier logo on the can was made in psp. The next job will be to make a z person to go in place of poser chick.
Skyclad Sorceress Misusing her powers to turn the TV ...too much Z bier ;)

The Wizard's Alter Room (#2)
1. Background done in Z originally. I turned the letter L into an alpha and then skinned it to make the walls and floor one piece. The object coming from the walls are the same alpha resized and inflated
2. The urn was done using the sweep profile tool.
3. Wizard head sculpted sphere...the hair was achieved by masking and inversing the mask leaving the hair parts editable. I think smoothed and inflated and added noise all from the deformations pallette.
4. The hand is from Fouad's (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=008668)hand script. I then cut a star into the hand with z sub selected.
5. The nails are cones that I offset in the deformations pallette and applied gravity, flattening and tapering and then resized and applied to the hand.
6. The cloak of the wizard is just a ton of zspheres.... though the sleeve where the hand is ..is no more than a torus tool deformed flattened and tapered and then moved, stretched snapshot and repeated....and the face of the cloak surrounding the head is torus tool as well. That gave my cloak a little more finished and less rough look.
7. I used painshop pro7 to add the sunburst in the hand and to add the signature in the palm and to also add the smoke to the alter. Those things could have been done in Z totally cept for the sunspot (havent totally figured that one out yet) The background was composited to the wizard in psp also. My computer resources are extremely low and the easiest solution was to use psp in this instance...

Here's another character I designed for my scene as well as a quick set-up I did to see how I wanted to compose my scene. I just used one generic pose for the faeries right now, but they will be posed differently. I can see now that the color scheme is "too busy", so I'll need to work on that.
No, the character in the middle isn't Homer Simpson.

geeez....I have to tell yall I am partying it up at bedtime..and it was a sheeer joy to come to the forum and see so many replies to this challenge....though we will talk more Monday night about stuff..I have to tell you that you all had great ideas......it was said to me by a former member that these challenges we have had so far were a great idea but that we had seen all this stuff before....or words to that affect....I have to disagree....the thing I love so far about these is the fact that each ARTIST is entitled to their own vision of the concept of the image to be presented.....the subject matter may have been done before..but not all of you have done things fitting the genre's that you have been tasked/challenged with....that is the joy of this for me....even the old timers on the forum are branching out to fill the bill here....and for that I am truly appreciative.....the creative force that abounds this forum warrants everyone including the lurkers to be involved.....the vantage points and perspectives of each member is truly unique in my honest opinion and I know that I learn something if not from the technique involved in the creation process but from seeing things from your perspectives as the challenges are presented and executed....I personally view each piece and come away with a little something from each piece that is displayed here.....if I had only but one bad thing to say so far about participation would be the fact that I would love to see more of the old timers present their visualizations of truly professional talents...these challenges are not meant only for the hobbyist and enthusiasts...but for the community as a whole....old times of the forum please challenge yourselves to enter into this arena of sharing...many of you have posted that it merely takes you but an hour or so to create a Z masterpiece or semblence thereof.....so I ask that you dedicate yourselves to join in on the fun that we are all experiencing.....as a collective effort you know it will deeply apppreciated, it will add to your own accolades, and enrich the forum further with you inspirational works......dont wait for the breathern of the forum to post but take that hour to come up with something.....and share....thnx for the consideration..and thnx to all that are currently participating.....I know I appreciated it/you.....
Well NOW I know how to do it... I think of ideas and Slosh does them to perfection. Thank you... ~L~ Super good, Slosh. The lighting is perfect.
MTB I like the lightening in the first one and the skin texture in the second ~s~
DeeVee the vegitation on the mountain is really good. Reminded me of an old movie but can't remember the name. Witches mountain I think.

Just a reminder...
Please post your gallery entry before midnight tonight.
Be sure to include the <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>[GalleryEntry]<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> tag with your images that you wish to be included in the gallery.
And of course, the images must be made in ZBrush. :)
Have a little too much coffee, Ron? ;) Despite the very hyper post, Ron makes a great point about the benefits of these challenges. Each of us has something to add that can really help the community as a whole. For example, when I look at the first image posted, by Gummie, I see two different examples of using a stencil to create an image. Stencils can be your best friend, especially in post work. For example, Ron Harris has used stencils to put the letter R on a character's forehead. I used a stencil to paint the gold star on the cover of the magic book earlier in this post. Ken B has demonstrated the use of stencils to control the fiber brush. Gummie's contribution was a demonstration in stencil use. (I'm not picking on Gummie, his/her post just happened to be the first one. But you all get where we are going with this. This is a CHALLENGE not a CONTEST. And I am very very happy to see the participation we are getting. And last Monday night, the room was packed! I sincerely hope to have the same crowd (and more members) tonight.
Take care all, and get ready for the next challenge!!!

Regarding the post from Ron and the comments by Slosh. I don't know how other people feel but I like these challenges because they challenge me come up with something (be creative) and test out some new techniques i.e. my picture for this challenge took me ages to do because I have been struggling with getting fog where I want it, and in order to do the picture as I wanted it to look, I had to knuckle down and work with the fog till I got it. Otherwise I probably would have left it for another day. The same with modelling, I wanted two heads in there, one monster & one human. Granted the human one didn't turn out as will as I would have liked it, but I was able to hide it in the fog (hee hee).
I don't expect any comments about my contributions, and I don't get any. But my point is that personally, I don't care if the "old masters" of ZBrush contribute or not. It is up to them if they want to or not. And if they can knock of a masterpiece in an hour, would this really be a challenge to them?
And I am not doing this to campare my work with others either. I am just doing it for myself, and posting the results because what good is a challenge if you never enter the the finished product?? It is part of the challenge.
:D

I agree. These challanges concentrate the mind. It's all very well having creativity, but if you can't focus it on one particular project(which I'm prone to doing) then it's pretty useless. Personally I'm grateful for the chance to experiment yet also conform to rules...albeit loose ones and I'm building up my portfolio while I'm at it. Now where's that coffee... ;)

Here's my update. I did more work on the materials. I added the heads, hair and eyes for this one. The "magic attack" was made from a Zsphere for the right hand and a regular sphere for the left hand.
There's still more I'd like to do with this, but...
