Aside from a little bit of Photoshop to create the fog alpha, 100% ZBrush. The pieces were assembled and put in place with a canvas size of 640x640. The actual working canvas was 2500x2500.

like Lumiere himself used to say in the movie: "Sacre Bleu!"

Disney beware of Matt.

note: the shadow ought to be heading the other way. kisses.

Wow! I had no idea this feller would be so popular. Thank you, all! I'm glad you like him.

Here's a Step-By-Step for how he was created.

1) All the pieces were modeled from primitives. In the case of the base, the majority of his body and his hands/mouth, I used the MultipleMarker tool to combine elements. The head was modeled from a half sphere and ring3D for the jaw, and a cylinder for the wax part. The teeth were also a half cylinder.

2) The pieces were arranged on a 640x640 canvas and markered. I then cleared the canvas, enlarged to 2500x2500, and used the markers to bring the pieces back on two layers -- Metal and Wax.

3) The eyes, teeth and tongue were added on new layers. I didn't even bother to texture the head or the eyes. The pupils were created with the shading enhancer brush. The eyebrows were painted on with the simple brush. A few other colors were used to enhance things.

4) Wicks were added from cylinders. The Flames were created with the fiber brush, followed with some smudge brushing. The flat color material was used, since I just didn't like the effects that I was getting using the colorized glow.

5) The spotlight is just a plain old circle3D primitive. For the shadow, I used the MRGBZGrabber to capture his depth profile, Level Adjusted it in Photoshop to get solid white and black, then used it as a stencil in ZBrush. It was... interesting... getting it rotated into position.

6) The depth grab was also used to help create an alpha channel in Photoshop to control ZBrush's fog placement.

7) 7 lights were used for the final render -- 3 of them glows placed where the flames were. 1 sun was placed where the key light was, but given a yellow color and made radial -- this gave the candle reflection on the wax. As you can see, when I adjusted the contrast and brightness curve of the final render I also completely lost the fog. Or did I?

8) I exported the image, Reset ZBrush, then started a new project at 2500x2500. I filled the layer with the image that I'd just exported and the flat color material. I then used the enhancement brushes to make the flames more luminescent and polish up a few details. Blurring was done to the shadow and the spotlight circle. This also had the effect of creating a very natural "bounce-back" glow above the floor. Finally, the shading enhancer brush selectively brought back parts of the spotlight to really make it shine!

All in all, about 6 hours of work. And a whole lot of fun!

A very loyal rendition of Lumiere, Aurick. The mere image brings to mind the very voice and movements of the character.
Nice job.

By the way, D.J. -- your comment asking if this was the first in a series of images (it's not planned to be, by the way, but who knows where inspiration will take me?) made me remember this. It's my very first ZBrush picture, done with the demo of 1.03 or 1.13 -- I can't remember the number anymore -- and posted one year and one month ago. "The Beast"

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1023267445iak.jpg

I think it's pretty obvious why, prior to ZBrush, I didn't think I had a lick of artistic talent. It's amazing how far things have come in such a short time. Which is why I (with much embarassment) am resurrecting him -- to encourage the current batch of newbies to keep at it and keep having fun! :)

Thanks for the inspiration for us newbies, although that's a pretty damn good image for a first try. I think you've always had the talent but needed the Z to bring it out.

Thanks for the walkthrough Matthew! Say, do you have any plans to do any of the other characters like the teapot etc?
