Hi guys,

I started this as a medium-poly Max model, but did the refining and detailing in Zbrush to get comfortable with the program. Hope you like it. Im currently enjoying painting my texture directly onto the model. Zbrush2 is as relaxing & comfortable as a warm bath.

I killed one of those in my garden today. An elderly neighbour "tsk, tsk'd" me and said "Now they'll be comin, mark my words!" - Really love it!

This is really awesome.
The modeling is top notch!
I am assuming thats a max render?
Thanks for sharing this. :) :tu:

Nice detail. Could you share a picture of the Max low res mesh? Can't wait to see your paint!

You are all very kind. :) I was hoping to get away with just showing small images, because some parts look blobby & crude close-up. I am no Zbrush Jedi yet! So the engineering for this model was done in Max. Any suggestions / ideas about what to do to improve its surface will be very welcome.

I want to put it in a landscape scene with some weird plants, so I think I will make a lower poly version with displacement maps, or my computer will die!

Here are some bigger renders (warts & all)and a shot of the Max version (after meshsmooth) so you can see the difference. It was looking a bit cute at that stage. Yes Mahlikus, the renders are max ones. Cheers guys! http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200406/user_image-1088121991kuf.jpg

Awesome.

One suggestion..play around with the nudge. A medium strength with a larger focal shift. Also, try using some pinch to sharpen up areas where needed. Like making some of those exoskeleton bumps look thorny. Still..for your first go, its wicked awesome! If I may ask two thing to learn from this?
What is the polycount of the max model before import? Also, think we can see a wire? I am damn curious to see how this is put together poly wisw. I use wings3D and would love to make something of this like in there so even wires help me to disect construction.

Thanks in advance and keep this stuff coming.

That's a really convincing looking creature. More real-looking than fantastical. It needs a habitat ;).

great job, it a little soft looking close up, but much better than I can do. some sharper, harder looking shell bumps will do the trick. :tu: NICE

man i looked again, wheeeew good stuff, maybe just increase the intesity of the bump map. that'll be enough. texturing will add much to the model as well.

Also A+ on originality, I havent seen anything close to looking like that.

THIS IS awsome, the modeling is great, u'll have no problem catching up on Zbrush its really easy and elegant.

Here is the wireframe of one half. The full polycount is 22016, which is how I made the lowest level of the model in Max. This model was adapted from an old one, and I spent time removing many triangles but not all of them. I am not proud of this wireframe. :td: The limb parts are denser than the rest: the forelimbs assembly is about 8000 polys on its own. The model was mapped, then imported into Zbrush in 6 pieces.

I dont think this would be the best way if starting from scratch. This model was not originally intended for Zbrush. I think it would have been better to export a much lower polygon model because that way it is easier to avoid triangles completely, and I think the big benefit of starting in Max is the degree of control it gives over mapping. If this was not my feeling, perhaps I would start with Zspheres.

cheers, :D

Lovely work, please get it textured :D
There's nothing to stop you exporting your low-level zbrush model, UVing it in max, then re-importing it into zbrush. I still use photoshop a lot for texturing, and prefer to have a have a more "readable" UV layout than Zbrush can provide.
