View Full Version : Hulk Model.

Hi folks,
Following on from my comic themed Batman thread, my latest model is The Hulk.
I always saw him as a brutal, gnarled and weathered character, rather than the baby faced hulk or the male model pretty boy hulk of the two film offerings. (I shouldn't criticise really as they were clearly awesome models!)
Anyway, here is my vision of The Hulk.
As per my usual workflow, Base Model in Max, sculpt and textured in ZBrush4. Hope you like. :)

Some different angles, all straight ZBrush renders.

I like your version. Good job.

ps: How do you edit your post to get the thumbnail attachments linking to the full size and with more than 1 thumbnail like you have?

KMaddix

Cheers Zber2,
To add the thumbnails I press the Upload Image or File button in the Attach Files box below the text box. Once i have uploaded one image I just repeat the process with more images. This seems to add them as thumbnails rather than huge images in the thread. :tu:

I will try to attach one with the other method, see what happens!

Hi KMaddix....... That's what I do, but it always posts the big image without thumbnails.

I like this a lot. I think its a much cooler look for the hulk. I think it upstages your batman too ;)

Thanks for the comments folks.
Zber2- Maybe it is because I am using firefox? I just tried the other method where you have to type the code into your post and I get the big version.

Julien- Thanks, I went for a comic version of the hulk but more gnarled. The skin paint will hopefully look better when I do a Mental Ray render at some point, with all the whistles and bells that goes with it.

Alfonsopryo- Cheers, I agree, it certainly took more concentration that my Batman, so many wrinkles to sculpt! Great fun though.

hahaha, I love his face. Looks like a grumpy ol' hulk. I think it is a nice, fresh take on him. One suggestion would be to soften that sharp plane change under pectoralis. It would fit better with the other muscle forms.

nice work!

You have a very cool style (on the batman too). Love the "-too old for this sh.." look.

One crit; It would really help if you lit the model for presentation. The larger shapes tend to get noised out by the finer detail..

Awesome model either way!

Beneto- Thanks, yeah I see what you mean by the sharp line there, I actually modelled him with angular lines at the start to keep with the sharp chin theme through the body but I got rid of most of them as they didn't lend to muscle flow very well.

thomasfenger- Cheers, I am hoping to do a decent MentalRay render at some point soon using all the maps, hopfully some of the skin painting detail will pop out more there too. We shall see.

Here is another image, this time some grabs of the various stages of creation.

Awesome work mate. Refreshing take on a popular character. The gnarled look really makes me think he's quite old and feedup of being the hulk. I agree with getting some lighting in there and maybe a backdrop of some destroyed buildings etc etc. Or even a retirement home (smashed) ;)

Keep up the awesome work, look forward to more!

I never really cared much for DC/marvel, and reading the thread title my first thought was "great another hulk". but this stylized / colorized version is actually within my interests :P The face actually reminds me more of Marv in the Sin City comic, but it fits this character as well. since you're breaking away from the traditional hulk anyhow, give him a mohawk :)

I really like this! Great that you gave him a different look than the Hulk we're used to seeing. Awesome style.

Moni86 , M0delista & DMan3d - Thanks guys, I am pleased you like it, and yes I will make a base for him!
Matt- Cheers mate, get your Hellboy finished and stick it on here too! See you Sunday!
GSeaman3d - That is my favourite comment so far and the reason I do art in the first place, thank you very much. (Mohawk would rock, I agree!)

Can't wait to see final renders, but actually I was just asking for highlights and shadows on your wip.

BTW; A mohawk would rock, but the "I'll do it myself" haircut fits better with this version I think. Somehow this is what the Hulk would look like if he stared in "Gran Torino"..

KMaddix, glad you like my thoughts :p and as for the haircut, a do it yourself mohawk maybe? just a thought, not trying to persuade you to change the model

I managed to find time to import the Hulk mesh into Max and render out some displacements. With these I did a few fun posters I thought I would share.

very cool Hulk! I like it a lot. It's always great when the model and page design are executed well. This reminds me a little of a Sam Keith illustration.

almost didn't want to open this thread because I've seen a bit too many hulks for a while, but this version is an exception. very nice take on The Hulk :)

artstudio3, RenoAnimations, maxinkuk > Cheers guys thanks a lot.

industripop > Thanks for your comments, I will be sure to check out his work.

Julian_K > Thankyou, I was trying to give a different twist on the normal Hulk, thanks for taking the time to look and comment.

rasmusW > Cheers, I actually modelled the hard edges in originally but when I sculpted the muscles, they didn't seem to flow very well so I smoothed most of them out. There are a few remnants left on the chest and the hands, just to tie in with the face as much as possible but not as many hard edges as I originally intended that is true.

Exceptional sculpt, in a world full of cg hulks, yours really stands out to me. Love the proportions and detailing, I only wish you sculpted his bottom half as well. Regardless, 5* from me.

I decided to revisit my Hulk model and do a Mental Ray render using displacement and normal maps. I used the fast skin shader basing the settings on those kindly provided by ZBC member xjgd4321 on the excellent Ma San Li thread, only needing to tweak a little bit to apply them to my model.
Comped in PShop.

Thanks for the kind words folks. I am working on a Simon Bisley character model at the moment so will hopefully be putting something up on that in a few days.
>hung8582 Thanks, I take your point about the trousers, they should be more battered and dirty. If I get the time soon I will revisit them and sort that out.
