Grab Doc as Texture- can it be done in shapes? like a star - circle- etc?
OR
Can you paint a mask on a one layer doc image with and without 3d elements in it-and can you do it in flat render flat render

Try the Stencil tool on a pure black background!

I'm not sure it can although I've never tried. Holding shift pulls out a square.
Using shaped alphas to drive your brushes after you've grabbed the texture will give you the same effect.

Ps Stencil method for the first star

GrabDoc captures the entire canvas, regardless of the stencil. However, the Deco and Directional brushes will "crop" the grabbed image using the currently-selected alpha while you paint with it.

Pilou thank you for the Stencil tool info- haven't used this tool much- need to read some more about using it.
