Hello, I'm completly new to Z-Brush and I have a simple question. I read some of the manual and looked at some of the script tutorials, but now what? Do you guys have any idea for a simple first project?

Oh! I have one more question. How do I convert Z-Spheres to something that is easier to paint on (like Cube3D)? The paint just don't seem to want to "stick" to surface...

Welcome to the forum Deepthroat and Fred! If you're into ZBrush for the modeling, I say start out with an alien head. If you're -planning on being a painter, ask DeeVee or someone else for some tips on landscapes, and you'll be modeling and painting masters in no time at all!

More questions:

How the f**k do I make eyes? As soon as I deselect the face, it turns into pixels!! How do I place the eyes? It's frickin impossible!

Also, how do I use the UVW controls effectivly? As you can see in my dino pic the texture is all streched out of shape.

It didn't do it. I deselect the face, and make and place the eyes, but since I can't reselect the face I can't rotate the view or anything. It sucks. Help wanted again.

Use a marker when you place the face, and a mark for each eye after you're happy with the placement. Then you can clear the the screen, click on the markers to reset the eyes ,bring back the head in the tools pallette and replace the head.
You then free to work on the head ,ok Fred!.

I'm now postive that Z-Brush hates me personally: How do I reload markers?

It takes a little while to adapt to the ZB workflow - but it is intuitive and wont let you go after you get it ;)

Basically I divide my work into 4 phases :

1. modelling of all the objects in the scene (if you want to you can texture them too but that isnt always the preferrable way)
2. Put the objects on the screen (distribute to different layers where you think nescessary) and place markers for each one of them.
3. Painting over the objects with 2.5d brushes(in this stage you can easily clear a layer, use your markers to bring back an object and start reshaping it to your desire
4. Lighting the scene and rendering.

This is only one possible workflow - ZB offers alot more though ;)

*As you might have noticed the assignment of materials is not included in my workflow - this is because i rarely use fancy materials - mostly basic material with variations in diffuse, ambience, specularity, color bump - and if the variations are slim enough these can be applied while painting colors to the pic(otherwise you'd experience hard edges where the materials intersect)*

**Well materials are too powerful to just disregard them as i do - so go take a look at them ;)**

ZBrush is tough to get a hang of, heck to this day i haven't bothered to figure out what the hell an alpha is, but once you do, it'll be AWESOME.

Just for the record, the Alpha palette is possibly the most powerful one in the program. Alphas can be used for practically everything:

:b2: Changing the shape of your brushes
:b2: Masking objects
:b2: Making stencils to control painting
:b2: Making models through Alpha skinning
:b2: Controlling Fog

And that's just to name a few. Take time to learn this powerful palette. It's the key to getting really great results.

That's next on my list of things to do Aurick! Thank you, I had no Idea what it could do. (I thought it added fancy designs to your brush stroke...)

Oh, and also thank you for that you show such great understanding of the pain of someone "borrowing" your network cable. Truly, you are a great man!
