Have a small problem on my brand new PC. I de-zip Sculptris Alpha5 and run the exe as administrator and Sculptris works flawless.

When I restart Sculptris the next time I can't save, open or save or import obj... I can start a new project and use brushes but the four buttons mentioned above don't work anymore. Am I doing something very stupid or is Sculptris not yet useable under WIN7 64bit?

Runs well on old XPSP3 machine, which I won't keep much longer though.

I don't know. I'm running it on Win7, presumably 64-bit, and it works fine. Maybe you shouldn't unzip it as administrator then? ...or configure the exe to always run in admin mode. Shouldn't be necessary though, unless some kind of file permissions have been set in a weird way for you.

I am also running Sculptris on Winows 7 64bit without problems,no permissions were needed.

Thank you for your answers. WIN 7 is totally new to me and so at least I now have confirmation that the problem is with myself
I will track deeper and look at Firewall, Antivirus etc...

DrPetter: Thank you for this most fascinating software. I do miniature sculpting with epoxy and this is the closest virtual thing so far.

I'm having the same issues, frustrating that I cant save my work at all...

Also running win7 64 bit. I Tried deleting the old folder and re-downloading and it worked again for a short time, now it's broken again. trying again yielded no fix.

You could turn the UAC off just to test if Sculptris works ok ,if it does you would have to make the decision on whether to keep it off and use Sculptris or not.

I tend to use Microsoft Security Essentials (FREE) and keep the UAC off anyway and have no problem when using Sculptris.
I hope this helps you. :)

i wish it was that easy. UAC is already off, it's something else that is preventing it from opening. I'll start closing background apps, maybe i'll get lucky.

Any Antivirus blocking Sculptris?

I have Win 7 64bit / UAC off and it works, so it could be another software
blocking it.

I had a problem with either AVG or Comodo Firewall
(with defense + enabled) not sure what application it was i diabled both and it then worked.. HOWEVER!!!:ex:

After i tuned the security software back the problems soon returned..:qu: and i isolated the problem (as weird as it sounds) to either a bad corrupted material in the material folder OR to many overall materials loaded at one time.. not sure.. but after i deleted all the materials except the default ones it ws working fine again.. Hmmm.. try deleting your extra materials..

my system specs..

AMD dual core opteron 64 overclocked hehe socket 939(old skool)
2GB ram ddr overclocked
windows 7 64bits(not even sure why i'm using 64bit but.. anyhow..)
nvidia 8600GT
Comodo Free Firewall
AVG Free Antivirus

my version also crashes very often, high poly count is usually to balme but i did have an issue with mats. if you need lots then create a sub folder within the main sculptris folder for extra mats so you can find them. As for continual crashes, i run in xp sp2 even though i have win 7 64 bit since sculptris never worked in that format. If you still have problems then change the ascociation to a previous version that it did work on and all should be well. A word of advice though, save save save, if you have a crash then at least you won't have lost everything even though the software can restore last session there is still the problem that it will crash the instant you try to do something.

I run Win 7, 64 bit and it runs just fine.

On the AVG front.... you might want to uninstall AVG.. there was an issue with that last update that prevented me from booting Windows. Yea, it was THAT bad. AVG admitted their mistake, I'm sure they are going to fix it but still, AVG really screwed themselves with this one. I now have Microsoft Security Essentials which actually got some very good reviews. I'm no MS fan but I do run their OS so I would THINK they would do their best to protect it considering all the flack they have gotten in the past about Viruses Worms and Trojans. Never had an issue with a program being blocked from running like so many of these other anti virus programs do. Royal PITA!!

I am currently unable to open, save, export and import files. No dialog window is ever opened when I try to activate these commands. I've tried disabling the UAC to no avail. Is this problem exclusively affecting Win7 64-bit-users? That's what I'm using anyway.

I had this problem before, and it went away by itself, but I haven't been so lucky this time. Does anyone know if there's a fix of some kind? I'd hate to have to stop using Sculptris.

Try the following.
1: change the properties to run as admin in the security settings. I know it sounds silly but this does make a difference, so set your name with full permissions.
2: in it's properties change the setting to run in win xp sp2 that sometimes helps.

do all this by right clicking the icon you use to launch sculptris.

Also if you have downloaded extra materials to use in it they MUST be in a separate folder from the pre installed files.

hope that works for you.

This seems to have been the problem. I had a bunch of extra ones in the same folder. After moving them, everything works again. Thank you so much!
