Ok, I'm trying to create a half-pipe and I keep ending up with the following:

I'm trying to flatten one side of a 3D Cylinder to create the effect. Notice that the side that is supposed to be open, is closed. Can anyone help me get this working, or know of another way to create a half pipe?

Thanks. :)

Hi CD

The trick here is to use masking.
1. Draw a 3D cylinder
2. Set Inner Radius to say 75
3. Set HDiv and VDiv to 32
4. In Selection set Rows? 16 and skip 16 this will mask of exactly half of the resolution.
5. select MaskAll
6. select Cols
7. Select Hide Points
8. Select Clear Mask
9. Wah Laa a half pipe!

Hmm... Why didn't I think of that? ;) That doesn't make the edges hollow does it? Your illustration kinda looks like it does... Oh well, I'll give it a shot. Thanks Digits. :)

I've got another solution, if you're still interested...
1. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads0/user_image-990233151dah.jpg
2. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads0/user_image-990233163deg.jpg
3. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads0/user_image-990233182ntr.jpg http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads0/user_image-990233192zmn.jpg
4. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads0/user_image-990233204kyt.jpg
5. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads0/user_image-990233217uaa.jpg

1. Start with a Ring3D, and in the Initialize sub-palette set Coverage to 180 and SDivide to 5. Un-press SV in the Modifiers sub-palette. (Setting the SDivide to an odd number is half the battle; it gives you a flat side for the inner part of the pipe).

2. Use RFlat (in the Deformations sub-palette) to flatten the outer wall of the pipe, in this case -20.

3. Set RotY (Deformations) to 90 so the Object Preview window matches the picture.

4. Flatten both "ends" with the Flat slider, in this case set to 50, then -50.

5. Use the SizeX slider to lengthen your half-pipe. Set to a hundred a few times until the length is right.

Hope it helps :)

Thanks everyone. I found another way as well. I took a 3D Plane and performed an S-Bend on it, then Flat-tened the edges on the curled side. :) I guess there's more than one way to skin a half-pipe. ;)

geez! that seems like a lot of work for a simple half pipe!! 3DS Max, you make a half cylinder of any shape and size, copy it shrink it and boolean cut it and your done. takes maybe 3 - 5 seconds.

**But then I guess this doesnt matter in a Z forum**

I know you were just dying for another method!

Ring 3D
180 coverage
-100 on the Z size
+100 inflate Z
+ whatever in the Z size
