View Full Version : Monday Night Challenge #3 - Spacecraft
This week’s challenge is brought to you by Jaycephus. He has suggested creating a spaceship. Originally, Jay’s thought was to create “vintage” spacecraft, such as one would have seen on The Day The Earth Stood Still and other sci-fi movies of the past. Feeling that might make the scope too narrow, it has been expanded as follows (although anyone who still wants to do the old style is more than welcome to):
1. Space craft (I am assuming only a single craft, but perhaps not. A fleet may be in order). Any design is acceptable, whether vintage, modern, or futuristic (of course, these terms are used loosely, since there are no known ships to compare with).
2. Outer space background, original creation in ZBrush…no photos for backgrounds. Background may include stars, planets, nebulae, etc.
3. Image can be modeled, painted, or a combination of both techniques. Hopefully this will open up options for our painters.
4. Have fun! Come to irc chat on Monday nights and share your experience with others. We always have a good time. The room is #zbrush3, and is on sorcery.net

Thanks, Brian/Slosh,
ADDENDUM: Any Spacecraft/Spaceship design is permissible, EXCEPT prior known designs. No X-wing, Tie-fighters, Star Trek ships, etc. Be unique. Do your own thing!
Actually, the idea came from Daniel Sandner. But I was appointed by the previous administration to make an 'official' selection of the Weekly Challenge. :)

Some of those jaggies look like serrated edges, and actually look good on the ship, to me. That is a sweet spaceship design.
I think you need to add some Fog Lights to that ship. It's about to run into a planet.

That is some seriously cool glows on your ships. I like the composition of skimming over a moon in orbit around a planet. It looks like a fighter wing about to spring an ambush. Are these the enemies of the S'Squorls?, The Phoxies perhaps? ;)
I see they like to camouflage themselves to blend in with the closest objects. Is that a Chameleon Matrix they have on their hulls?

Wow! all the submissions so far are truly wonderful, Full of imagination, and great techniques. Not to mention colourful. There are some amazing textures & materials here.
Don't worry Wenna, I am not great at modelling anything but it was fun to take the challenge anyways!
So here is my entry. Space ship & asteroids modelled from single spheres. Lights added to the ship using spheres and multimarker tool. Background painted on 2 layers using spraybrush on various settings with home made alphas. Photoshop used only to add signature and convert to JPG and compress cause it exceeded the limit for uploading here.
I really did put a lot of effort into this one, about 3 hours last night and another 2 this morning. I hope I will get faster as I improve my skills.

*Doodle*: learning hull modeling and glow:
Han SoSlo and his Millenium Slug attempt to outrun the S'squorl blockade. This is from the Star Snores movies.
I finally realized my dream of building Spaceship models for the movies. DOH! They don't use models any more.
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1036542729vui.jpg
I used Kaz's mechanical hull technique from this thread:
space 1 (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=007011)
I also used multiple generations of polymeshes multi-markered together. I didn't do the whole thing, but I 'could' have. Then I would have a 'Millenium Slug' zTool. I wonder if ZBrush culls polygons when you build up a complex polymesh?
This was FUN. It was just like building a model, but without the mess of the glue, or the expense of constructing your own miniature Ion Drive!!
(I built the Millenium Falcon back in the early 80's, with hand-crafted and painted blaster burns, and then my brothers shot it to pieces with a BB gun when I went away to college. I got the same model a few years ago, but I haven't put it together. I just use it for a reference for computer art.)
EDIT: Ha, my monitor at work is so fuzzy that it gives me a completely false sense of how aliased my picture is. I considered working on the aliasing a bit, even though this was a 'doodle', and I needed to go vote. But I thought it looked good enough and exported it. I even had it in PhotoShop and could have messed with it a bit there. I blurred the engine exhaust. But now at home, the aliasing on this thing is atrocious.
Just stand back from your monitor about 5 feet, and it will look good. ;)
And to think we pay extra for video cards that have built in, real-time Anit-Aliasing. Just buy a 6 or 7 year old monitor!
P.S. In what other program would this 'apparent' amount of work be considered a 'doodle'??? ;)

Here's my entry!
First the nebulas were painted using the flat material and the color spray ztool!
Then the stars were made using the spray tool with the colorized glow material!
The exhaust was done using the sweepprofile ztool and the colorized glow material!
The ship was made using a conglomeration of different Ztools and Alphas!

QUESTION FOR ANYONE:
How would a semi-transparent, glowing plasma or flame exhaust be created??? The best example shown on this thread so far is shown in Michael Melnik's (PusGhetty) picture.
I am thinking of creating actual geometry, using the glow material, and attempting to make it semi-transparent, but I don't think the technique of creating transparent objects in ZBrush will work with the glow material. Anyone tried it yet?
If this technique is feasible, it could be used on flames all sorts, aircraft afterburners, and spacecraft, as well as for lots of sci-fi/fantasy effects.
Thanks,

This is based on Master Mentats technique so dont give me any credit.
Hopefully your ship is on a different layer then the background. If not then you just have to be a little more careful in the painting.
Export the image (or just the background) as a psd file. Then import it back into ZB as a texture and fill a layer.
Then just use the simple brush with rbg only and an intensity of about 5 to 10.
paint the desired color and shape you want. You can also model the shape you want. Just, when you draw the shape on the canvas (after modeling) only us rbg on and enter gyro mode to rotate the model's color only into the position you want. Once again with an intensity of about 5 or a # of your desired transparentcy your looking for. After you have the base exhaust colors down, you can use the shading enhancer or highlighter brush to brighten the inner part ot the exhaust. Maybe some smudge and blur for taste...though try to keep within the exhaust for you do not want to blur your backbgound... ;)
Hope this gets you started on your way or at least gets the mental wheels turning.
Rock on!
*edit = Okay I made this Zscript in like 30 seconds so if it seams lame...well it kinda is...but it does illustrate what I mean...
Enjoy! Hope it helps

11-08-02, 11:58 AM
I think I might know whats wrong though I ma having a hard time trying to figure out what your getting at. here is an attemp to solve some problems I see in the image...I think :(
When painting something like this..you want to fill the layer with a base color first..black in this case. If not..the painting acts funny or doesnt even paint at all. Thats one...two is Zadd...because of the depth option of ZB..you will run across problems. When I first started making my space background I had Zadd on so the depth of the paint and modeling changed throughout the doc so when I drew the ship in...parts where showing and other parts where under the background pixols...very weird.
To mend this problem, I used the blur brush with zadd only to smooth out the pixols of the background. With 100 intensity and enough strokes..it will level out the pixols.
Now, if you mean your glow isnt glowing well..sometimes it is the ambient setting in the lights and material.
Other then that, I am not to sure of the problem...sorry if I am not seeing it/helping.
Can you make a zscript? or post a sample zbr file so one can read the problem and have it if front to work with also.
Jaycephus

Thanks MTB:
The problem I am referring to is the glow. it is being overridden by the painting in the background.
I think it has to do with Flatten Layers: You must not flatten layers for transparency, but you do need to flatten layers for glow, so there is an incompatibility between the two. I am looking into other techniques to combine the two or achieve the same effect. Thanks,
Mentat7

Building upon MtB's jet flare explanation here it is with some additional tweaks. In the image below I placed the engine pod and a few base 3d primitives to serve as the foundation for my jet flare. The image was rendered then exported as a .psd file then imported back in and a new layer was filled with this imported texture. I then used the smudge brush with the spray stroke to break up the form of the 3d objects. I painted in additional color with the spray stroke then applied the shading enhancer (again with the spray stroke). A little freehand smudging and touch up and it was done.

Awesome tips everyone! I still don't know if I can create glowing, transparent flame, however. I am sure there is a technique, but it probably requires some blending between two different renders of the scene.

Thanks for the kind words and for the interest. I decided to do a zscript that embodies how I got the detail into the ship and how I did the thrust exhaust effect with the colorized glow material. This is two seperate scripts.
Important
Instructions:
load and play the first zscript it is called pusspacetexalpha.txt, when it asks for a .ztl click cancel. Let it play through then immediately load the second zscript which is called pusspaceshiptech.txt,
this will finish where the last one left off.
Note: the second script will not initialize Zbrush.
Hope this helps, please let me know if it runs ok!? Or if you have any questions.
Take care,
Michael
Jaycephus... I'll have to look into that glow problem, hmmn...

Here is my entry...I figured space ship = space travel...and who says all space travel will be by ship? OK, so I couldn't model a ship to save my life, so this station is the best I could do. Sorry I broke the rules. :(

Jay,
I love S U N . P O W E R E D Nice job!. For your transparent flame effect, I would scrap the glow material. Use the transparency effects like you have, and use MTB and Mentats technique of bringing it back in for post work. There is a glow brush that you might find effective...
This thread has shown just how good these challenges can be. We have some of the very best z art I've seen here in one place. The tips shared for a tip junkie like me has been outstanding. Everyone who's posted should get a pat on the back.
Congrats to all.
hi! this is my try to create a spacecraft, i think its before the time of star-trek, maybe a prototype :D

Slosh! I have great difficulty accepting that you couldn't model a space ship. Considering the extravaganza piece you just posted here!!!

Mentat is racking up some awesome ships on this thread. :) :tu:
In the spirit of the space them on this thread, I searched the web for earth and moon textures. I found a wonderful site with many choices. Here is a link to that site: http://oera.net/How2/TextureMaps.htm
And an image I did with the maps. View of Earth from the Moon. I know the perspective is way off, but I wanted to show the awesome textures. JPEG messed up the resolution, of course. The textures are very clear and beautiful in other formats.

Thanks Slosh. I had that url long time ago but lost it.
Wanted to post one more with all the tips I've picked up here. The ship is still weak, but better than my first one thanks to pusghetty's tips.

OK I went for the "near future" ship. It's actually an idea I have...which by the way NASA you can use it as I don't intend making any spaceships anytime soon. ;)
The way it works is thus:
At the front is a hoover which sucks up all the space particles coming in contact with the ship. Once inside the ship, the dust etc is ionised(positively charged). It's then directed out the back and hit against the wings which are also positively charged. As everone knows like charges repel...so the dust goes back and the ship moves forward.
Heh..It probably wouldn't work, but that's my idea anyway. :)

This gallery page will be updated when this challenge is over.
Few of the ‘how to’ images are currently not included in the gallery. Please add the following tag [GalleryEntry] next to each of the images that you wish to be included in the gallery.
Question to members: Would you like to see similar ‘Monday Night Gallery’ pages created for future challenges?
Hoping to ‘find the time’ and participate in future challenges,

Pix that would be super! I was compiling the pictures together at the end just to be able to see them in one shot, but this week I knew I wouldn't be able to do that since there are so many, and such good ones that shrinking them down to fit would be a crime.

A super idea and offer Pixolator! Question...at what point in the IMG tag line do we place the [GalleryEntry] tag in?
Looking forward to possibly seeing some of your work in these challenges. ;)
Hopefully in the future the technology will be so advanced that ordinary folk can embark on voyages in thier own Sailing Vessels. Much like in the olden days of wind and sail these craft will sail the solar winds. This image depicts the future "Blue Chablis II (http://www.cyber-webs.com/Floydvoid/Void_Blue_Main.htm)" headed for "Infinity and Beyond!"

Mentat7: Currently, the [GalleryEntry] will be interpreted manually to help in identifying the images that are intended to be shown in the gallery. Simply append this tag immediately following the IMG tag, such as below...
[<font></font>IMG]http://www.pixolator.com...jpg[/IMG][GalleryEntry]
...or with a line-break...
[<font></font>IMG]http://www.pixolator.com...jpg[/IMG]
[GalleryEntry]
At the later stage, the gallery creation may be automated to scan for the [GalleryEntry] tags. It is possible that the tag will be extended to include more details, such as your preferred image-title and info that you wish to be displayed with the image. :)

well Fouad, thank you very much..made me smile to be on the list..but personally I think Dlee (DEB) deserves the initiator award on this...not to belittle our other peers on this...but I think she was pretty much master minding our initial setup for all this and has done an outstanding job compiling the images also at the end of the challenges. Thanks again Fouad.
Pix, thnx for your idea on this as well. A very nice gallery compilation for the challengers and makes life so much easier on the eyes :)

Alien Explorations
My final entry for the challenge. I varied a little bit...but I love the zifs so much and figured this 8 legged lander and zif robot on an alien scene might fill the bill tonight. Looked kinda different for my stuff so I thought I would add it. All Z cept the signature. These two models have been seen before I know but I love em to death..snicker...thnx Lonnie for the lighting discussion and experimentation we did tonight and to Dlee for brainstorming and inspiring the setting for this one...

Great Images everyone. Mentat great series. Pushgetty excellent ship. Always fun to see your images Daniel.
Exercise Model #6
This is the X22-Cheeta by O.C.M technologies. It's their fastest ship yet. The reason why you don't see it flying in space is because there have been some problems during its development. It accelerates so fast that we have had to remove the test pilots with a spatula from the pilot's seat.Okay the truth is that I haven't had much free time to do any Zbrushing. Also excuse the lack of textures. Made mostly with Zspheres. Three meshes.

Well, I finally got mine done. I was almost too late. I am pleased with how it turned out, and my kids thought it was "COOL", so that's good enough for me. I still feel it was a bit too fuzzy for me, but I was trying to achieve some blowing alien dust and explosions. Great challenge, and Great images! So, here's mine. Enjoy, see you in the chat!

I'm just throwing an idea I had up into the air: It might be fun to have various monday night challenges link to eachother, and then maybe have final images with all the elements included. an example would be if you did a "pirate" challenge, then followed it up with a "pirate's ship" challenge, then maybe a "pirate's base" challenge. Then anyone who entered all 3 could make a picture with the pirate, his ship, and his base all in one. Of course there are problems to this kind of linking, but they could probably be overcome. Maybe those of you in the monday night chat could discuss the idea :qu:
