ZBrush 4.0

Purchase and Upgrade Schedule

Dear ZBrush Artists,

As you may already know ZBrush 4.0 Win and ZBrush 4.0 Mac will both be officially released for download on 8/9/10! (9th August 2010)

We sincerely trust that this exciting version of ZBrush will become a major part of your day to day artistic work-flow, opening you to an ever expanding world of creativity.

ZBrush was first released 10 years ago as a tool by artists for artists and we have certainly come a long way since then!

Our vision has always been to develop new and innovative features that push the boundaries of what has been previously possible in digital art, so we are thrilled to offer this new breakthrough 10th anniversary ZBrush 4.0 Win or Mac version for pre-order right now! (see the details below)

Here is a sample of beta tester images created with ZBrush 4 beta!
(When Z4 is released, beta testers will have their own threads here at ZBrushCentral so that you may communicate with them and learn from their Z4 experiences!)

There are instructions for both new purchases and free upgrades to existing customers.

Upgrading to ZBrush 4.0

If you currently have ZBrush 3.5 (PC) or 3.2 (Mac) you will be sent your upgrade instructions beginning on 8/9/10 - 9th August 2010*. If you have not yet upgraded to the current ZBrush version please submit a Support ticket at http://support.pixologic.com (http://support.pixologic.com/) as soon as possible so that your upgrade to version 4.0 can proceed smoothly.

An option to purchase a backup CD will also be available for those upgrading to ZBrush 4.0.

*Upgrade instructions will be sent in batches over several days. In order to be completely fair to everyone, the order in which upgrades will be sent out has been randomized.

Purchasing ZBrush 4.0
At the same time that ZBrush 4.0 becomes available for upgrades on 8/9/10 it will be made available for sale in the Pixologic online store, for immediate download.

In addition to the usual backup CD option, Pixologic will also be releasing a limited 10th Anniversary Special Edition package of ZBrush 4.0 for Win/Mac.

Z4-CD&Tin.jpg

Despite being in absolute awww, I am still hoping they will add Layers painting and blend modes...

Fingers crossed..............Why hope when if you look in the gallery there are plenty of hints that seem to state exactly that. e.g every single image states created and rendered in zbrush 4. No external renderers.

The second image in the gallery shows multiple maps like ambient occlusion map, shadow map, depth map etc etc.

I'm not saying I am right but it looks that way. Either way not long till we find out anyway.

Cheers

All current ZBrush license holders are entitled to a free upgrade to ZBrush 4.0 Win/Mac, regardless of when they purchased ZBrush. If you currently have ZBrush 3.5 you will be sent your upgrade instructions beginning on 8/9/10 - 9th August 2010*. If you have not yet upgraded to version 3.5 please submit a Support ticket at http://support.pixologic.com (http://support.pixologic.com/) as soon as possible so that your upgrade to version 4.0 can proceed smoothly.
So those of us on the Mac with ZBrush 3.2. Do we have to do anything or are we treated the same as if we have 3.5 and have the upgrade instructions automatically sent to us?

07-27-10, 05:33 AM
Yes, very nice.

But I hope that ZB 4 will also include some more basic features that it misses so far, like better integration of using reference-pictures within the modeling area, easier Topology (watch 3dCoat for that !), better texturing tools for making things easier like the ability to manually alter already placed textures that are alraedy on the model (like the liquify-Filter in Photoshop) etc.
That would make ZB much better than all that Gimmicks that nobody really use everyday.
The shadowbox looks really promising and usefull, but most of the ZB 3.x preview-videos also did, until we later found out that they were more tricky than easy to use in reality.

Oh man this is awesome. I especially love how more and more prebuilding meshes in other software is obsolete.

I do hope there have been some more user friendly zbrush > 3dsmax/maya pipeline improvements though. It's very difficult to find good tutorials on how to actually get a proper render for people that aren't that experienced. All that stuff with getting good results with normal/displacement/ambientoccl./specular maps etc.. very confusing. I'd really like to be able to animate stuff coming out of Zbrush that actually looks like my finished sculpt :)

You havent heard? GoZ (http://www.pixologic.com/zclassroom/homeroom/tutorial.php?lesson=GoZ) is coming to Zbrush 4 for Maya, Max, Modo, & C4D. So at the click of a button you will be able to transfer your model between Zbrush and Maya/Max/Modo/C4D with a shader network built and everything (among other cool things). It's neeto.

Is it for XSI now? I was hoping it would be, but last I heard Softimage was excluded from the list (Modo, Cinema 4D, 3DSMax and Maya).

Some of the new features look awesome already. Drawing out an intricate pattern to make a model, then matching it to the surface of armor...

shadowbox and matchmaker seem amazing. Gonna have fun playing with shadowbox for sure. I'm also impressed with the new render system. That watch with Subsurfacescattering looks amazing.

The only improvement I hoped for, were the topology tools, but I can work around that with topogun.

I understand it's a professional tool just as much as a hobbyist tool, so some people might prefer updates that concentrate on fixing existing stuff and making it more solid. But us hobbyists, enjoy the new inventions that come with every upgrade. It's like christmas presents, you don't know what you're gonna get, till pix starts leaking videos.

I still remember we were discussing for a long time about how pix did a certain type of material on rocks in a dino pic, which turned out to be cavity intensity options in the next upgrade.

The video says To Be Continued... at the end, so what's demonstrated here isn't everything I presume. What's there looks exciting.

I bought ZBrush last week, partly because I feared a price hike when Zbrush 4 came out (which is the case as it turns out but there's a 'grace' period first). I guess on hindsight I could've waited to get my hands on the Special Edition, but thems the breaks. :(

It's a major drawback, especially now that zbrush seems to have the ability to do some decent hard surface and environment modeling ...

Shadow Box, I'm thinking that shadow box is using the same Voxel based algorithm the Zsphere sketching uses to make volume. this is really innovative and i hope we will see more and more Voxel based tools. can you comment on this video at all?

thanks Pixolator for the Video.

my mind bleed last night. I couldn't even post my joy.

If all those were entirely done in zbrush...like they say....and i believe them....

I could not be happier...no more 3dsmax...and no more photoshop for me. Those programs are like pulling teeth now. I just want to live inside of zbrush.

Hair, Multipass rendering, boxmodeling....

and i know there is more to come....ugggg.....my mind can't take it.

Hope to see it all at Siggraph tommorrow.

I want to be able to use more then 4 GB of Ram, and would really really love not to wait minutes till the memory is compressed or the swap files are written ...and to get the message, that the system has not enough RAM, even though the system has 12 gigs. That would be for me the coolest improvement. That and GoZ for XSI

F i L
07-27-10, 11:29 AM
Is it for XSI now? I was hoping it would be, but last I heard Softimage was excluded from the list (Modo, Cinema 4D, 3DSMax and Maya).
Whoops! sorry about spreading false info. (all those XSI users got to my head).
You're right GoZ will support Modo, Cinema 4D, 3DSMax and Maya.

It probably won't take long for 3ds max to have GoZ aswell I suppose.
3ds Max will be a supported software of GoZ in Zbrush 4.

Pixologic, you guys are artists in every sense! the choice of music that accompanies each demo video always fits the occasion perfectly. there should be a Pixologic Mixes Album ;) ...or at least roll the credits. i wouldn't be surprised if you guys composed it all yourselves!

thanks for all the Hard Work on the upcoming release

Thank you Pixologic!!!
I have a (probably a stupid) question. When it says current users of zbrush get 4.0 update is that only meaning the ones that previously bought zb3 or are you meaning the others that bought zb2 or zb1 for that matter will also get it? Also one more question. What happens if you bought ZB for PC but PC is breaking and want a Mac version of Zb4?

ZBrush 4 is a free upgrade for anyone who's ever purchased a license. However, as the initial post states if you have not yet upgraded to 3.2 (Mac) or 3.5 (PC) you should contact Support to do that NOW. This will allow you to receive the 4.0 upgrade as soon as possible after it launches.

Regarding changing platforms, the upgrade must be to the platform that you already own a license for. If you wish to change platforms, you can do so by purchasing a second seat at a 50% discount. Or you can sell your current license and then use the profits from that to help offset the price of a new license at full price. With either option, please contact Support for the necessary instructions.

Sick! Just sick! Shadowbox modeling looks incredible. What an intelligent and innovative feature! And by the looks of it, finally we have accurate hard shadows (which shows shadows of object hidden from view). I'm blown away yet again. Can't wait to see more.

Why hope when if you look in the gallery there are plenty of hints that seem to state exactly that. e.g every single image states created and rendered in zbrush 4. No external renderers.

The second image in the gallery shows multiple maps like ambient occlusion map, shadow map, depth map etc etc.

I'm not saying I am right but it looks that way. Either way not long till we find out anyway.

Cheers

Mike RI want to see 64-bit and layer painting in ZB4 :p

but those look more like feature related to the render engine not a layer painting system ?

One thing I'm not sure that anyone has mentioned but that is obvious from the very first screenshot in this thread (the one with the green watch), and that is that there is at least some basic camera animation system in. If you look right above the Document section of the screenshot you can see a timeline with keyframes, and to the far left it says "Camera".

WOw. ZB4 looks awesome. I spent the day pretty much just infront of zbrush's booth. This shadowBox thing that pixolator released the video of (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=090818) is a game changer. It's really easy and extremely fast for creating things that are usually difficult to model, you just basically draw (using a mask) on the one side of a box to get a sillouette of an object... then you quickly block in the thickness by going to the top view and drawing another mask. Modelling like this is so easy and fun. The other major thing they talked about alot were the new cliping brushes. These things are very intuitive... it sorta acts like drawing a line and having all the geo on one side getting smashed flat onto that line (you can also draw curves instead of just straight lines for some really perfect shapes). I think this thing is going to get rid of the trim tools that seem a lil tricky to use. THere's a new clay brush and a new Elastic move tool that are also really cool.
Hope that helps. That was my day at siggy.

give us details!! No i just watched the show, they had a list of presenters demo'ing and talking about how they use the new zbrush. Paul went over some Spotlight during his tips and tricks presentation. His demo's were my favorite, very concise and clear, packed with good info and some good humor. But surprisingly spotlight wasnt the highlight (at least today). Most of the presenters just kept showing the clipping tools and the shadow box. Spotlight seems to act like a layer that you can turn on or off to pull color or depth off of an image, but there seemed to be alot more going on with it than that (you could resize, scale change the hue etc. Pretty much just saw the same things that are in the video that pixolator release on spotlight a year ago). Oh and the animation timeline was pretty neat. It's great for storing camera positions and different morphs of your character. There's a new button that acts as a constraint so a subtool will follow part of a deforming mesh. There's actually a lot of small stuff that they added that makes a ton of difference, just too many to write down.

Spotlight is probably one of those things that once you have it, you use it so much you end up forgetting what life was like before that. ;)

the Timeline sounds great for doing facial morphs and posing. I wounder how it works if you sculpt between morphs? ..Can you sculpt between morphs? So many questions but i'll just have to wait till Pixo releases another video and let you get back to Siggraph.

Thanks!

Have you seen Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, 300 or that little movie called Avatar?

I want 64-bit also, but thinking ZBrush is for hobbies and small projects only just `cause its a 32-bit program might be a tad naive.

come on we dont even know if it is or not 32 bits and we are already moaning plus even if it still wasnt 64 bits lets stop being drama queens and produce kick ass stuff...i use Zbrush everyday in production and 32 bits is not an issue ...and no matter how hard Mudbox tries to catch up they fall behind not because of ram usage, interface coolness or usability because Mudbox is quite good too...the main strength of Zbrush is that this guys started from a blank canvas with a "can do" attitude and totally thinking out of the box...desperatedly hanging to past workflows and being old school is everything BUT zbrush attitude imho...just look at the gallery in here and you will see awesome stuff made YEARS ago when we could only dream of actual machines,Ram or GPUS...dont get me wrong 64 bits would be awesome but i am much more excited by whatever new modeling paradigm, worflow and tool they can think of because this is what truely Zbrush is bringing to an otherwise stagnant industry.Like with any business, or human activity there are priorities and i am glad that Pixo puts the pressure where it counts wich is the way to go...unlike Autodesk that might be running 64 bits but their code is so ancient and there so called "new tools" pure marketing cosmetics.

T0rch
07-28-10, 12:22 AM
As long as there's paint layers (as has already been stated in this thread) then I think that'll drastically change workflow a lot. Matchmaker looks great too, I'm guessing it can be used to create some really ornate designs and then 'deform' these around certain objects, like a piece of armor for example?

gasoil
07-28-10, 12:32 AM
Velesius :)

first please be aware that you are here talking to some people that were involved in some of the productions you are mentioning...
Second yes nobody is saying that 64 bits wouldnt be nice but we are pointing that 32 bits is not compulsory or will make or break the other features of Zbrush...this is as simplistic as the old "i dont like the navigation" rant...if you can get pass that simple obstacle and you are not yet working in this industry then you need to know that i wish this were our day to day concerns...this is nothing of a problem at all.
Also please note that even when Zbrush was used "only in concept" Concept design is part of the production unless you are implying that anything that is done by concept is "not serious"...concept drives the entire production therefore even if Zbrush was used only for concept work (wich is not the case btw) that alone will make it a very valuable tool.
It is time that we understand again that the true beauty of this tool is to bring new approaches and new ways to do things rather than being so conservative and shy that u cannot think by yourself or out of the box...

where the heck did this even come from? this is not just keeping up with the jones', this is full on "this.. is.. SPARTA...." kicking the jones' into a black pit of death!

it astounds me that even though zb is still pretty inarguably the app to beat when it comes to sculpting, it doesn't content itself to just give us more of the same. or even just making what we have better and faster.

on top of all of that, it gives us stuff that i couldn't have even imagined to ask for.

Hey all. Thought I would say a few words regarding z4 at siggraph. I went through today and picked up my license and was excited to see some great features!

What I saw was a lot of reselling of features we are all aware of. Which was unfortunate because I really wanted to hit the fast forward button. This was mostly because the people in the crowd had little to no experience with Zbrush, so the man demoing at the time didn't want to jump to far ahead I suppose.

But here is a list of a few things that I saw, and were briefly mentioned that I thought sounded/looked very promising. Sorry in advance to Pixologic for spilling some of the beans:

- Improved Best Render - Allowing you to render out multiple shots of your image in one render, compositing it all in zbrush as you would in photoshop. Also allowing you to export out each image of that render to allow for more customization in photoshop.

- Subtool Control - Better ways to organize your subtools. Organizing by name of subtool rather than scrolling a giant list.

- Fiber FX - This wasn't gone over much... sadly. Sounded like a hair and fur simulator within zbrush.

- Improved Layers - Allowing the artist to paint in layers, control the opacity of each polypaint layer, and more.

- Saving of Project - this will save out your tool's orientation, rotation, everything as is. So the next time you open zbrush up and load your Project, everything is how you left it. Including every singe setting on every single slider. Very handy!

- Duplication of Subtools - No longer do you need to clone, then append a subtool to duplicate it. A simple button does everything for you now allowing you to quickly clutter your creatures mouth with teeth!

- Expand - A new feature that explodes your tool and its subtools into space allowing the user to quickly select one of the subtools. Rather than scrolling through the subtool list you can click the expand button which is located under the frame button in the UI on the right, and you'll see all the subtools fly out in space. Pretty nifty.

Those are some of the little things I saw while I was able to stick around the Pixologic booth. I'll post more as I remember them haha. Happy Zbrushing!

that's disingenuous - you're contesting my enthusiasm and even preface your challenge with "no offense". implication - "if there's nothing more, then what are you going on about?"

and as i said, look at the video at the beginning of the thread.

i am not even aware of the other things you mentioned... all i know is what i saw from the video.

that's it. and that's enough for me. but evidently there's more? well, color me a very happy camper.

all i know is from the video: shadowbox. clip brushes (hinted at). some crazyass room modeling doing i don't know what. shape conforming.

and i stand by my evaluation - innovative. giving us stuff we couldn't even think to ask for. doing stuff the other guys can't even think to try. and stuff that will be genuinely useful in my day to day work.

but as i said, it's completely in your rights to be blase about that. i don't think you can convince me to follow suit though.

I was very impressed by shadowbox ( I am still figuring out what i can do with it) and I think it is okay to be impressed and be overwhelmed with the pure awesomeness of new features. Eventually things become commonplace but let's enjoy this fully now. I am just a 3d hobbyist whose real work is graphic design and advertising. I avoided going into 3d as a profession because i couldn't wrap my head around the way 3d work was done. It was beyond my grasp. Now ZBrush is emerging as a game changer and I am feeling compelled to give 3d more serious consideration.

I could never do polygonal modeling, extruding, pushing points, edgeloops...pah , regrettably it just didn't appeal to me. I am hoping that Z4 will make retopology more intuitive and i can both sculpt and create production ready models that are animatable. I just wish the innovation reflected in Shadowbox enters retopology too. waiting eagerly for more videos. i just feel high and pleased nowadays going through my everyday life. :)

- Improved Layers - Allowing the artist to paint in layers, control the opacity of each polypaint layer, and more.
!Was it the same layer integration like in the Sculpting Layers ? Are they shared across Subtools ?

Does ZB4 cure cancer?

Would you be happy if it did? Or would you complain that such a feature had no place in a sculpting program?

For some reason I suspect the later.. :p

- Saving of Project - this will save out your tool's orientation, rotation, everything as is. So the next time you open zbrush up and load your Project, everything is how you left it. Including every singe setting on every single slider. Very handy!

This is a really needed feature and something I've really appreciated when using 3D Coat. It's nice to just carry on from where you left off.

So far very little info has come out and the little that has is cool but hardly worthy of all of the brown nosing that's going on in here. Day two, so I'm hoping we get a full feature list Shadowbox will serious help with a project I'm doing right now and I really hop that retopology gets refined.

I'm really excited to get all the details even though I get my hands on the actual release in a few weeks.

You know, this is one of those things that might seem boring compared to all the flashy stuff like Shadowbox and paint layers (which are, to be fair, great additions), but I'm really glad that Pixologic are devoting some attention to basic workflow-related things like this. I've been using ZBrush for ten years, and I still find the whole "your project is a tool" paradigm to be incredibly clunky. Something as simple as the ability to save the thing you are working on and then come back to it just as it was when you saved it is a VERY welcome addition. :)

Happy Zbrushing!Thank you for the details.

Is there blend modes (overlay, multiplay, etc etc) in Zbrush too?

Let me start by saying again how much I absolutely love ZB. As an amateur artists and also software developer, I can appreciate the time and thought that continues to drive such innovatiion in software.

That said, however, I find myself still hoping that Pixologic will endeavor to make this more than just a release filled with new gadgets. Again, don't get me wrong, I am in awe of their creativity when it comes to ways to create and modify geometry, but while innovation for it's own sake is a good thing, sometimes it seems as though they continue to try to solve problems which don't really exist. (Shadow Box looks fun, but if I truly needed to create geometry quickly, a base mesh in Maya or other package would make quick work of it).

I base this on some of the incredible galleries right here on ZBC. You guys are at the top of the artistic heap and continue to amaze us mere mortals with what you have been able to create with ZB in its current state.

Anyway, I am still hopeful that some truly useful things will be included in this release. Namely:

- A better way to retopologize.
- A better renderer, so I can (for still images) alleviate the requirement to create a myriad of maps for use in Mental Ray for high geometry, highly detailed meshes.
- A better way to retopologize (hmmm...seems like I repeat myself)
- Support for Connexion devices, which I would love to use in ZB.

(Note: I realize that a better renderer may be a stretch. After all, in order to render well, things like lighting, environment variables and a myriad of other things must also be included. One can dream, however.)

Lastly, I am still very appreciative of the efforts of the developers at Pixologic. They work hard to keep us happy and to ensure ZB stays competitive in the marketplace. I know about the long hours of work and pressure they have been enduring (been there many times). I just hope that the designers...the guys with a list of features to be included...have a few items addressing workflow, technical (x64 would be nice) and utilitarian issues.

And yet, I remain an appreciative, dedicated ZB user.

I'm personally very eager to see hands on what the new render improvements are.
rendering in zbrush is actually already not that bad in a bang for the buck ratio. you have to consider how quickly a Zbrush render is done, compared to the huge amount of work to export, create and set up various maps to get what you see in Zbrush, before you even start to bring it to the next level of lighting, shading and making final high res renders out of Max, May or any other of the big packages.

for pure conceptual work or anything which results only into a 2d image, it might be less and less necessary to leave Zbrush at all, which could make life so much easier.
one thing that you couldn't realyl do so far was to render a compplete scene with objects and characters quite apart from each other in Zbrush.
The odd behavior of fake perspective view just made that impossible.

looking at that white room in the demo I get high hopes that this might be fixed.

Agree with the desire to retopologize better, but you mention maya as a faster way to build base mesh.. Well, if you are going to go out of zbrush to do things then 3dcoat have everything you need to retopologize fast. and it's a lot cheaper than maya too.

Hey again. Okay something I do remember that I failed to mention was SSS. Not sure about real time but it is for sure in the Best Render. Also it sounded like you can paint masks to control the SSS. Can't wait to try that out. Their goal with the best render was to make it easy for anyone to display their own work the best way possible. And it sounds like we now have a lot of options to do so. They are doing their best to eliminate the need/desire to work outside of zbrush to get the desired effect and look you want with your final images/sculpts.

CGicore to answer your question, there was no talk about blending modes with polypaint. There were a lot of buttons added that we couldn't read on the screen, and they weren't mentioned. So who knows? lol

Can't wait to see what others have to say that have been there. If nothing else pops up we are only weeks away from the release!

see - this is a totally valid opinion to have and doesn't at all actually "rain on everyone's parade".

yeah, i just was in the process of retopoing something yesterday and it's painfully manual... but i think that the crux of it is is that zb just isn't a standard polygonal modeler with the kinds of tools that could make the process go faster if you can mix and match techniques....

what i ended up doing was do the big important features in zb and then export into a another app to just extrude out and subdivide things like arms and legs and then going back to zb.

you're perfectly within your rights to wish for and ask for the feature but it just seems like the issue is the nature of zb and that it's not a more general poly modeler but a very specific sculpt based modeler.

GO Z may end up being the answer you seek.

I am technically challenged when it comes to such things, but professionally speaking, it seems like Shadow-Box is more of a presentation tool than a production tool. Wouldn't all that work have to be retopologized to be of use even in film, much less a game?

It's certainly a gee-whiz feature, though I wonder if you could just import a B&W bitmap to use for that same purpose, or even better, import Illustrator paths for maximum control--? It would seem to provide an even more flexible workflow. But again, I wonder about prohibitively high polygon counts...

Kevphil,

looking at the bigger picture concept time can be as long or even longer than production ready modeling...if you manage to cut down times with more design focused modelers you can then speed up some valuable concept time...topology is a constraint that hopefully one day will be totally avoided...i can still remember my modeling sups 10 years ago saying that the only professional way to produce quality models was using Nurbs...today i still use Nurbs because i rather have them than not and the more tools the better but our pipeline simply does not support Nurbs at all anymore and the time consuming process of building things the nurbs patch way is simply not acceptable anymore.
There is no point in reinventing the wheel...there are plenty of very good poly, nurbs, parametrical or solid modelers out there...ive tried many different approaches for different shapes from solid to nurbs to poly to matehmatical modeling...there are so many flavors.
Lately i have seen unfortunately very little new faster more intutive ways to do things...and i have to admit that almost all teh time it comes from smaller more dynamic developpers or from developers outside of the entertainment field.funny enough the original idea of sculpting then displacemnet extracting is not even new...we where using excatly taht same idea 15 years ago (now you know why Artisan tool always eisted in Mya since version 1) ...Voxels? it is exciting to see them back on more optimized ways, cheaper and more usable but again Voxels have been around for ages...(Claytools) all this to say that any new paradigm in this particularly slow evolving computer graphics modeling field is welcome as an extra tool to do better faster and stronger stuff. In a world where i can still hear absurdities like "the cleanest way to describe a triangular shape is using a quad" (true story)i think that there is a lot still to be done to unleash creativity and keep constraints to a minimum.
If u are feature hungry and technologically challenged then you should just out of curiosity have a look at what other industries that cannot afford having people wasting there valuable time stuck in 1985 techniques, are doing.Imagine and Shape for instance is a cool cad design modeler capable of having catmull clark subdivs combined with Nurbs on the fly allowing booleans on subdivs and parametric modleing all in one single app.
At teh end of the day the core task of a modeler is shape creation....is not just make a cool looking human or biped is being able to tackle anything from a human to a cellphone, from a 747 to a flower therefore any shape creation tool is top on my list.
I rather see this happening and spend most of my time improving my eye for design and my shape culture rather than wasting my time as a "topology TD" wich i predict one day in teh so no distant future will be gone for good. There are already in the papers auto retopology algos capable of shape detection and remesh based on flow and it is justa matter of time until this hits the shelves.

Lapaev - mudbox is like simple carving knife while Zbrush is more like a swiss pocket knife. Carving knife may do job just fine, but when you have to cut nails or in the need of corkscrew.. good luck then. Choice is yours.

In reply to some earlier posts about Shadowbox, from the teaser video, it looks like it's meant to be a fast block-out option. It seems, many of the features of ZBrush increasingly look to keep you using ONE app. While ZB is an industry standard, I applaud them for trying to implement a lot of features and options into an inexpensive package for anyone not able to construct a complicated pipeline. However, like many of you may feel, it does appear as if it's getting a bit bloated. I wish Pixo would buy out NeverCenter and have a basic polymodeler under their banner.

All of the cool new stuff aside, I'm wondering if you can open a ZB3.x tool in ZB4. I can't remember exactly, but when ZB3 came out, were you able to load up an old ZB2 tool?

Thanks, Gasoil, for your thoughtful reply. I see what you're saying. Even I see hints at what you're talking about, as far as retopologizing goes. Who knows? Maybe some day a version of Decimation Master will reduce the number of polys and then remap them, all at the same time! :)

Take Care.

Lapaev - mudbox is like simple carving knife while Zbrush is more like a swiss pocket knife. Carving knife may do job just fine, but when you have to cut nails or in the need of corkscrew.. good luck then. Choice is yours.
Also, if you need a swiss pocket knife that has thousands of blades, all of which are tough to get out and aren't labeled clearly then you're in luck with Zbrush!

Look, I'm no fan boy of either product, but the amount of sucking up that goes on in here really makes many people look fanboy-ish. Zbrush has a horrible UI, is still stuck with pretending like 99% of the people who use it don't use it for making 3d models (aka it needs a proper 3d navigation space), and has been missing some key features that other programs do have (layered painting). Mudbox has a terrific UI, is extremely easy to use and navigate in, but lacks a huge amount of the great features that Zbrush has. Both programs could use to learn something from the other. One is not a "carving knife" while the other is a "swiss pocket knife". Go take a look at the Mudbox image gallery and tell me that it doesn't have the tools needed for people to make amazing art from it. "Carving knife" indeed.

The carving knife vs. Swiss Army knife comment is indeed a bit of a broad stroke. I think a lot of the "fan boy" kudos for ZBrush come from the fact that it's an app that doesn't require a very powerful computer to produce nice results (ZB 2.5D vs. MB true 3D.) Anyone who used ZB2 knows that Pixologic has already learned a ton from Mudbox back when MB was just a little app under the Skymatter banner.

Remember when Mudbox first came out and it had those cool "flatten" brushes?

I still like Mudbox, but I'd just rather use ZBrush. The complaints about the UI are valid, but I guess I'm just used to it at this point.

If I'm going to carve something, I'd rather have a carving knife. If I'm going camping I'd rather have a Swiss army knife. Not that accurate a comparison. Both apps bring something to the table at the same time they fill in each other's gaps in a lot of ways.

Guys, I said that with carving knife you CAN do the job as well. But lets take simple example here - you need to do octopus from scratch. Good luck making base for it in mudbox. You have to retopologize it later on - have fun in mudbox (while retopo in ZB may not be fastest - I can make the job done with it). Then make yourself set of nice UVs in Mudbox and youre good to go :) And so on.
Now, if one is using pirate soft or works in studio that provides software - it doesnt make a difference, can jump between different appz and get the job done. But it starts matter if you want to actually BUY separate soft for each task you can now do in ZB.

Mudbox is a great tool as well - all I am really missing in it are Zspheres or equivalent tool. It gives me absolutely amazing control in minimum time when building base. Plus - navigation.. I DONT WANT to be forced into pushing ALT all the time. While it makes sense in Maya or Max on bigger, crowded scenes - when I am sculpting it is just annoying. Mudbox could make it just like zbrush AS AN OPTION.

Both softwares are going head to head now - there is not much left to add. While Pixologic is trying to reinvent modeling Autodesk is carefully adding just about enough options to keep people comfortable. 3Dcoat is simply adding EVERYTHING - but is genius just on retopology, and free Blender now is offering really good sculpt as well...

At this point though I dont see any real game changer on horizon - its all down to personal preferences. Have fin making stuff. With swiss pocket knife or whole bunch of separate tools. Whatever you like. BE HAPPY! PEACE.

I just said clearly enough what I meant. And is just that - not what you think it is, not your personal interpretation of it. Dont need any excuses as I couldnt care less what you think about my personal point of view.
I prefer Zbrush but that doesn't mean I hate mudbox. Whats more - I was hoping for mudwalker between ZB and Mudbox, that Wayne Robson developed. As far as I know it was never released though.

What matters for me is just that - get the job done, realize your creation, make it happend. I am also using Sculptris and Blender at times, when I feel like it. Too bad you are so close minded.

Here's an idea, why not use........Both?

I know tons of people that Sculpt in Zbrush then bring their final low poly into Mudbox for texturing. Probably won't need this pipeline with the release of ZB4, but it's still a good workflow method in my opinion.

I love all the back and forth going on.

Zbrush vs Mudbox debates are always entertaining. We have them at work as well. I worked with fanboys of both software, and its always the same. Zbrush has more, but it comes with a cost. Mudbox is easy to use, but also comes with a cost.

Some of the costs I have dealt with in Mudbox, as well as others at my studio have not yet been mentioned here as far as I can tell. Here is a post made by a coworker of mine over on The Area that sums it up pretty well.

My Mudbox Experience. (http://area.autodesk.com/forum/autodesk-mudbox/suggestions/my-mudbox-experience/)

Keep in mind that post is dated.

In my opinion a pointless argument. Two different tools for different tastes. Like the old saying "there is an ass for every saddle."

And before anyone flames me for being a fanboy of zbrush, I'll go ahead and save you the trouble and say that I am. It's the best tool for what I want to do at the moment both with work and with personal projects. To be clear, it's the best... for ME... not the best for all. ~the end haha

I work in IT and "Tech Wars" never cease to amaze me. There is of course the classic Mac v PC debate, which is equally ludicrous. We're basically talking about the merits of two operating systems... loyalty over an OS is just nuts!

Software debates are the same. I suppose it all comes down to people wanting to vindicate their own choice as much as convincing others. If you've spent a fair chunk of money on something, and gone to the trouble of learning it until you're effective with it, you want that time and money to be worthwhile.

I did try both ZBrush and Mudbox. I preferred ZBrush, although I was at least partially biased from the outset. There were some nice things in Mudbox though and I can see why some people might prefer it... just not me.

I see it all the time in all walks of life. People buy 4x4's even though they don't drive off road. Then when they find they can't reverse the damn thing they complain it's too big.
Buy it because it suits your needs, not because you like the colour, followed by a complaint that the steering sucks.

Carry out some research before you spend your money. But sometimes you have to take a gamble. Problem with gambling is you don't always win. So make the most of what you've got, or go and gamble again and again and again...

We're all human and we're all different, some of us stranger than others. I suppose the future will bring software packages that can be personalised, the way you want it, with the bits you want in it. But for now that isn't the case.

I chose ZB and I made the right decision. Although I run into some issues, I'm looking forward to the upgrade (FREE), which sounds promising.

If you want it done properly (to your liking), do it yourself. But I bet someone else won't like it...

Not wanting to be too drawn into the debate - but my studio has looked at Mudbox and there's a lot of stuff to like in it.

The interface is easy for most people to get their heads around, the mirroring is excellent and the package allows you to paint on textures, something that as a games artist zbrush is really let down by.

It's not as advanced as zbrush though and there's often the feeling with it that they're developing it in a nice methodical way 'add painting, add layers, add new shaders' while zbrush is constantly making weird jumps of genius (some of which aren't really needed). Primarily my sole complaint about zbrush at the minute is it's ignoring older tools or forcing people into particular ways of working which force you to go out of the package to find better alternatives. I work in games - and it's not good for texturing or retopologizing. Yes you 'can' do both in zbrush - but not to the level I'd like (e.g. adding edge loops, dragging out polygons or whatever in the case of retopologizing).

Hopefully both will improve.

And on that note - this upgrade looks excellent - the ability to create non organic stuff seems to have taken a huge leap forwards, improved subtool control sounds brilliant and (please god) the layer painting looks hopeful. Just... textures pixologic. We need them no matter how much you want us to pixel paint...

HaloAnimator
07-29-10, 04:45 AM
I've tried that on a model and i will admit, paint on a texture using projection master is cool, but to me, I find it slow and painful...most of my brushes work, but it forces me to put the model down, paint a little, pick it up, etc.

I rather have layered polypainting with blending modes, i can finally paint my damn specular maps the way I WANT TO! With that in mind, will materials carry over in the layered polypainting? Like if I want my specular material on one layer and the skin on another will that be possible?

And expand subtools would also serve as a secondary function for those who want to bake normal maps in xNormal and WITHOUT tracing errors :)

Slightly off topic but...

There is some link on Aurick's post about polypainting advantages. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=6624740&postcount=47 Ofcourse, it's just a his point of view, but something prompts for me that we will not see textures in zb4.

And poly-painting does indeed have some awesome advantages. It is directly on the model for sure, and doesn't need UV's. All good.

Problems with it:

I work in games. We use textures. If I want to use polypainting (and I have) I'm limited in a number of ways as far as the pipeline goes. Firstly I ideally need to be painting on a low poly model as that is what the games model will be. If I subdivide the mesh numerous times it begin to 'bend' the final result. E.g. a straight line I've drawn can warp as it tries to transfer back down from a high poly to a low poly. The way round this (aurick I think suggested this to me) was not turning on the smooth when subdividing. At which point you're trying to paint on a faceted edged model.

Compare this to, say, the simple tools in other 3d apps. I load in a texture (or create one) and I paint away. I can paint in flat color or with a material shader turned on. And ultimately it's given me much closer results which I need for my field (games).

More importantly the texture sheet is useful because people need to be able to quickly adjust things. Addings scars, changing hue tones or whatever. I need to be able to pass this over to another artist and say 'I did this earlier... can you change a few things like adding makeup, dirtying the character or something similar?'. We reuse a lot of textures like this. I don't want to have to give them a collection of non UV'd squares that need the source model to do any work on :)

Pixel painting is ace - and fun - but for my games workflow we need texture painting otherwise I'm forced to abandon zbrush for that part of the pipeline.

We use it for the games I work on, and we get around the issue with XNormal. You export your high res mesh with the polypaint (leave TEXTURE selected in the export settings) and then bake the Vertex Colors to the in game model that has nice, human readable UVs. Sadly, in 3.5, you can't paint in layers, so any layered adjustments/variations are then done in PS in a master file, but with all of the tools for stenciling and masking--and painting while you sculpt (nice for things like hair), it's well worth the effort. Sounds like ZB 4 is going to give us paint layers, anyway! Although I'm a bit frightened of how large your file could become if you're not careful with them.

The other thing I love about Polypaint, is that you can rip out a rough sculpt and lay paint on it very quickly, so that the Creative Director, Art Director and everyone else with a stake in the final look can get a good idea of where you're headed before you put in too much time on it.

^^ I agree with Tatanka_Nui...i've been working on my game models directly in Zbrush...i don't even touch XSI until the model is completed... and I love polypainting since i have control over the detail and i can see it... I have tried using PM with a 2k texture applied and I hate how blurry my details are

And with layered painting, I do hope that i can paint, erase, duplicate paint layers and change the materials on each layer...

As for file size, this is one thing I kind of dislike... I am working on my demon and the damn thing is 1.2GB!! I hope there will some way around this... (maybe simplifying the model at save time)

Where will Pixologic send the package from and will there be customs duty involved?
Regular ZB4 packaging will be available through resellers in the same country where I live, so no customs duty involved. Will that be the case with the pre-ordered limited edition? I'd hate to pay extra for some nerd in customs office thinking he has to protect local markets...

I'm curious (since I've never been to SIG) whether or not the people who were in attendance got to do a hands-on with Zb4 on their own, or if they had to just sit there and watch the "professionals" use it on some display. If it's the former then people should be flooding us with info. If it's the latter then maybe the reason why there's such little info is because people were forced to only see the things that the artists who were demonstrating it used. So if the artist never bothered with textures then we won't know if it's got a layers system, that kind of thing.

Either way........ tell ussssssssssssssss!

I was lucky enough to attend siggraph this year, and spent a good amount of time at the Zbrush booth.

Unfortunately it was the latter. no hands on time, just watching demos. And some of the demos weren't about zbrush directly, but about coming up with character designs and general topics. Which is cool but didn't show any new features during those speakers.

Also Pixologic has to assume that most people at the show have never seen Zbrush, which may be true. So most of the stuff they were showing off aren't new to us. But scattered in there are new features like shadowbox (awesomeness) and the clip brushes (even more awesomeness.) I confirmed with one of the presenters the presence of paint layers (which is what I was waiting for before I bought it, or decided to try mudbox.) so I bought it. I also so transparent materials and SSS materials, as well as animation (it was only used to animate the camera in the case however.) There's also new subtool control, the solo button allows you to hide all the other subtools with one button. Expand will take all your subtools and spread them out for easy viewing and/or selection. You can now save a project in Zbrush as well, which will save settings and camera position and not just the ztl. GoZ is in as well and supports Maya 3dsmax Modo and Cinema 4d (I think that was the last one anyways.) As far as the plugins are concerned it looks like subtool master is built in finally. as for the others I didn't see or hear anything other than the announcement that they are being released with ZB4.

I didn't think to ask about 64 bit but I hope it's there as well.

I also spoke to a rep from 3dconnexion who said they had a meeting with zbrush soon to try and implement 3d controllers once ZB4 is finalized (Pray it be so!) I've heard that they've met before, but hopefully they decide to work together this time.

The reason we probably aren't saying much, is we didn't have hands on time with it, and it's already been said in other threads. I've said most of these points in another thread myself and I've read others doing the same.

now I'm just patiently waiting for an official feature list to drool over.
