I've seen some amazing models on here, and it seems everyone has a slightly different approach to creating hair, a lot of them outside of z brush. I'd love here about some work flows for creating realistic hair, and I'm sure I'm not the only one out there.

Poste'em please!

i love the plugin "Shave and a Haircut" for maya, it gives very realistic hair, its a pain in the ass for lighting though as too many lights blows out the colour, and render layers are not supported as yet (v5)...

its easy to learn, digital tutors has a great video on it.

The best one is Hairfarm, but it's for 3dsmax only. Extremely fast to render, hyper realistic and easy and funny to do since you actually model poly like and then the geometry is filled by hairs, so it's has fun as modeling is. It's very predictable and has great render pass to comp it after and the material are very flexible so many possibility's.

I've seen many people mention using Modo to do hair for their ZBrush models. I've never used Modo so I can't vouch for it. If anyone has any insight into this I'd love to hear about it.

from somebody who uses modo 10+ hours per day: modo hair is terrible. it's really only there for basic stuff, it's extremely tricky to control, and it takes a lot of time to tweak shaders to get something that looks halfway decent.

It's really good for short hair though- stuff like furr, grass, that sort of thing. For long hair and complex hair styles it doesn't come close to comparing to shave & haircut or other major hair packages.

Yes I have Modo and have used the hair a few times, or should I say fur, as thats realy what its for. Modo is very hard to control for hair. I yet to find a fair priced solution, but as of yet no luck. C4D is the easyest iv used so far, but its lack of quality SSS realy dont offer the best skin shaders realistic edge.

Hairfarm - Is great for people who just want to get into making hair without all the hassle of technical crap.

Hairtrix - Is another one that is an old favorite of mine :):) (http://mikeanash.blogspot.com/2010/03/hair-me-wip.html)
