View Full Version : Modeling and Texturing: A test image...

Hi :)
This is the latest modeling/texturing test of the under-development ZBrush version.
:b3: The model was first ‘blocked’ with the new modeling tool (first mentioned in this thread (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=005177)) then the model was refined using the modeling tools that you are already familiar with.
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1020135392pbt.jpg
:b3: The model was textured with TextureMaster. The 3DCopy function (the key function utilized by TextureMaster) updated with a new routine that it activated when texturing a model that was created with the new 3D tool. This dedicated 3DCopy routine is more accurate and produces better results than the general-purpose 3DCopy routine. The texture was painted mostly with SimpleBrush and IntensityBrush with basic coloring (no pre-made or imported textures). Two materials were used; one with wide and low-intensity specular-highlight that was used for most of the model-surface while the other material has narrow and high-intensity specular-highlights for ‘wet’ area such as the lips. Both materials utilized ColorBump, noise and an 25% orange Colorize-Diffuse color.
:b3: When texturing completed, 3 instances of the model were placed in different orientations on a tilted 3D-plane. (No 2.5D brushes, this is just the 3D object and its texture).
:b3: Final rendering done with two lights, one low intensity SUN light and one high intensity POINT light and best-rendered with soft-shadows.

:b3:Signature and saving in jpg format done outside ZBrush (other than these two items, the image is, as usual, 100% ZBrush)
:b3: This is a work-in-progress. The model and texture can benefit from more details and further tuning, I hope to ‘find’ the time to finish this.
121 certainly welcome :)

Hi, Pix! You already stated that you wanted to further refine the modeling and texture, so that point is moot. I have to say that this looks really exciting. These figures look as though they were photographed figurines. The soft shadows and lighting lend a very realistic feel. We are all eagerly anticipating this new release. Keep up the fantastic work.

He looks like quite the little dancer!
I like both the untextured and the textured versions.
The untextured version has a lovely marble statue feeling...but like a rare museum piece.
The textured version has those little beady eyes that work so well. Are you going to make his toenails more prominent since he has such big feet?
(Just one tiny thing bothers me...kill the texture on his lips...It looks like a bad herpes outbreak.)
This new modeling tool has me so excited!!!
It opens up so many possibilities that it is dizzying!
Thanks so much for keeping us updated on the
progress of this groundbreaking tool and your
experiments with it.
Cheers. :tu: :tu:

awsome Pix, i love those pics. i cant wait tillt he new version of Z
I agree with Belle, the feet and toes are so interesting, you should also put some toenails in there. You are obviously a fan of organic looking things and your work and this program really enhance these qualities. You say this was "best rendered" with the lights that we are familiar with, yet it has an ultrarealistic quality, another trait of your work and perhaps the new renderer in 1.5. My head is spinning with excitement for the great things that we will all soon get to do :D

This is wonderful, Ofer...The anticipation is matched by a sort of 'Pre-Conditioning' I find my mind going through in preparation for new tools, and new working conditions, like the software is having a synergistic effect with my brain...You certainly are making this artists life interesting...! ;)
(I like the lip material...Without it there seems to be too much uniformity in the model, with it there is life in this little critter... :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:
As you know I do not do much modeling. This is awesome and maybe I will start with this new version.
Question, all the samples you have given so far are for the modelers amongst us, there are an increasing number of members who are equally interested in the painting side of ZBrush, when will we get a sample of what to expect in the next version.
Incredible!!! It is amazing to see what amazing software used by an amazing artist can produced. :) Along with all the neat "render things", materials, shadows, and lights, the modeling looks so... so... something! Seamless and unstretched I guess. Love that head (the droopy skin!) and the toes.
Hi Pixolator . . . :)
With all due respect to your above average modeling & painting skills, it appears that this character has a severe case of some skin ailments. Maybe you should get him some really good skin lotion, to help soften all those scales & wrinkles?
Great work, as I've always come to expect from you, & you have a good one . . . Mark.

Fantastic work pix!! The lighting and shadows in that scene are amazing. It's outstanding how much of a difference it makes to the realism. I can't wait for the newest version in ZBrush, it just seems like its a real eye opener :)

Totally amazing. I knew the next update was going to be good, but not in my wildest dreams was I expecting a metaballs-type tool, updated texture master AND global illumination. Creating a model like that in any other software would be murder - I suspect with the new version it'll not only be massively easier but it'll also be fun too!
By the way, your skill as an artist is totally outstanding. I just hope we mere mortals can do the new software justice.
Thanks again Ofer for making art on computers fun! :)

PS - The rest of the 3d community are going to get their socks blown off when they see what's going on over here in ZLand!

Hi pixolator,
Is the new texturing routine only available with the new tool or will it be a general texturemaster update? I say this because I find at the moment I cannot get the texture as sharp as it looks when I paint it on.
Even with a fine mesh (although I've found the mesh size not to make a difference) and a very big texture after I drop it the texture softens too much.

Love the feet on that guy. Interesting to hear of the new 3d copy version as well. I hope you have a chance to finish this up sometime.
By the way, with that material on the top picture, if you gave it a light green tone, it would look a lot like jade.
Hmmmmmmmm. That gives me a few ideas. :)

all i can say is that when the new version of Zbrush comes out, the word "addiction" will have a whole new meaning.

My next few weeks go like this
-finish school
-get a job
-then buy z-brush. Sounds like a good plan. Those modeling and texturing is fantastic Pixolator. Can't wait.
One good thing about age is that you can apparently do with a lot less sleep, I hope so as the first time around, I went sleepless for days, the addiction to ZBrush was so powerful.

Man, I can't wait for the next version to come out. It's gonna be hard focusing on Lightwave and Zbrush. I've been messing around with my friends zbrush 1.23 and I've been blown away. The ability to create realistic organic textures are the best I've seen in any program. Hey, maybe you can create a plugin where you're able to paint on imported objects (for instance, lightwave models) like deep paint. I can see this very easily becoming a standard for painting textures. Keep up the "muy excellente trabajo". :D

Hey J...In fact, you can import OBJ files into ZEE... ;)
Jesta78

Yeah, is it possible to export the object with the textures you created and applied to it in Zbrush, then import that object in to lightwave in order to animate. Does Zbrush support or read lightwave object files? Thanks in advance.

That, I'm not sure of J...My advice would be to find the Ken B post on this page of the forum, and send him a personal message from his post...He uses LightWave, and he could answer your question for sure! :)
