This head was done entirely in ZB:

Using the above as a rough concept I built an entirely new head in wings3d with similar features, but this time it has animatable topology:

this is just a test in ZB before the above was tweaked more:

I think the next stage after i've finished the wings mesh is detailing it in ZB, making a disp map and then learning to rig it...
