Experimenting with my Alien Skin Textures applied within Texture Master.

Then, I redrew my alien models into seperate layers with 70%, 80%, and 90% transparency + color to give the creature a translucent cacoon type if skin. There's 4 layers of the same model but with differing transparency settings. The default layer is the model with the texture on Basic Material2. No transparency.

Set the fog with the background as it's texture.

Set the lights to mimic the contrast transition of the background.

That skin is mind boggling. The combination of layers had a remarkable result. Did you get the idea from my fireball, or was this something that you had kicking around already? Either way, it's an approach that I would never have thought of. Simply awesome!

You already know how much I like this painterly direction you've taken, but these material explorations you are engaged in are a whole new thing to watch...!

I'd like to see these material tests on a 'plain brown wrapper', so I could check out the methodology free from the gorgeous distraction of your piece! ;)

Aurick I actually was "inspired" by one of the ads for SoftImage. There is this alien being who's skin just blows my mind. I had been messing with Maya PLE, Bluemoon, and the like and came close, but not dead on. So I thought, I'd give it a go in Z.

Okee Dokee, here's the how2's and What4's.

First things first:

The models are textured within texture master using BMP textures.

The texture is applied under BasicMaterial2 with the settings as shown (except the Transparency is 0).

I rendered this layer, bake, and add the transparency layer.

Each transparent model contains it's own distinctive color/transparency/colorbump/noise.

The Final render with full lights yielded this:

Thanx, Sis... ;)
That explanation covers what I wanted to know...I was intrigued by the almost 'X-Ray' effect, and now I see the light!! :)

I am struck by the complete alieness of this image. The skin is almost as erethreal (sp) as the nebula that it appears to be in. Perhaps this race is made up of cosmic dust and materials from dead stars. Perhaps! Maybeposssible!

Thanks for sharing this technique, I shall have to try it.

A very cool technique Kathy-and it certainly yielded a striking and strange image. This is one I'm going to have to try.I like the little added effects on the starfield too!
