View Full Version : Armor - Updated 3/25 - page 2

A sneak preview of a major project that I'm working on, creating a new texture set for Michael's Gothic Armor from Daz3D. This is the first of three themes.
ZBrush has proven to be an invaluable tool throughout the project. While the majority of the actual compositing of the textures has been done with Photoshop, I've used ZBrush in many other ways:
:b2: Wrapping a number grid onto the model to see how the UV mapping wrapped -- it's VERY nice to be able to spin the object around in real time and see it from all angles without having to wait for a render.
:b2: Creating individual elements to go on the armor.
:b2: Creating the metals.
:b2: Using a stencil made in Flash (I love the way it handles vector graphics) to create the designs of raised lines.
:b2: Previewing the texture without having to wait for a render.
I honestly don't think that I would have been able to do this project successfully without the help of ZBrush. :)
Anyway, there are a few more parts to be finished "below the belt" on this set and then I'll be going to work on the other two themes for the set. Watch for them next week!

Excellent work Aurick! Are you going to sell the texture at Renderosity? ;) One question..did you number the mesh grid for the body or just for the armor? If you did it for the body I would be interested in getting that numbered. ;)
Great job Aurick, the armor is incredibly detailed. Looks like the cool kind of armor you would get near the end of a videogame. Two thumbs up :D

-Wrapping a number grid onto the model to see how the UV mapping wrapped.
Can you give a bit more of details on this part?

Thank you! I'm overwhelmed. To answer one particular question, Daz3D is going to get first crack at the set since I already have a working relationship with them and they have the broadest customer base as well as (initially) the most aggressive promotion of new items. If they turn it down, then I plan to take it to 3DCommune and Renderosity.
The other questions have been answered with the accompanying illustration. I hope that it helps!
Mind boggling!!!

cool.
i seen body Armor all ready being sold in Renderosity on differnt models a while back.
its kind of like stencil in (wraped mode) painted with texture.
or you can say like tattooing it

Very interesting thread, Matthew, and a fascinating technique for the alignment...!

Even a hardcore purist has to love the information, ingenuity, and beauty of this work..Well done!
For the fun of it, here are the Lobster Plates rendered in ZBrush instead of Poser. Even though this is a product for Poser, I still greatly prefer ZBrush renders!

The intaglio effect is flawlessly executed, Matt!!! Wonderful surfacing!
:tu: :tu: :tu: :)
Now THAT is what I wish I could do... Main reason I got Z was for texturing... haven't accomplished anything of note. Too distracted by the other goodies... That is so awesome Aurick.

Well, it's been a crazy couple of days, but I finally got the Good character versions done. Next up, Evil and Elven.
The more I work with ZBrush for this texture work, the more I enjoy its blessings. Nothing new to report in that respect -- I've simply been getting better at the techniques already described.
All told, I think I've put about 40 hours into this project so far.
Let me know what you think!
Thanks for the information. Good luck in your endeavours.
