Nice to see some scripts coming out of the woodwork! Here is an example of my spiral script from the soon to be released version 2 of my Digit's Widgets. Perhaps one of you math wizards can take a look at it and make it better.

To get started, make an object, keep it active in Move,scale or Rotate.

With this script you can utilize a script marker as an origin, Position your object and press the Marker "Save" button. You can save more markers by pressing the "M+ M-" button to select a number.

There are two types of spiral here, one with Z-Type off and one with Z-Type on.

Enter # of iterations (say 60)
AnglePlier will multiply the spread (leave at 1 for now)

XYScale will modify the angle (6 to 15 is good)

ZSAngle for Z-Type Off can be -360 to +360 degrees

Shift will move the calc from xyz to zxy or yxz (play with this)

With Z-Type ON make sure that ZSAngle is very small (say +- 1 to 5) otherwise it will spiral right off the canvas :)
