merging layers

when i merge two layers, my materials go switched all over and the work looks terrible. any ideas what i do wrong please?

Make sure that before you merge, you turn on MRGB and ZADD in the Draw palette. You've probably been trying to do it with just RGB or some such, which can lead to very -- unusual -- results.

Before I merge two layers, first I see them together on the canvas and then adjust one of them using the modifiers. (I displace one of the layers until everything looks fine.) Then you can go ahead and merge them. Hope this helps.
