Well the pig challenge was a great success. Thanks for all those who participated. Tonight Dlee drew names from a hat and low and behold Mentat7 got drawn as the new member to pick this weeks challenge. He chose a superhero for the challenge. Here are his comments/rules to follow for this weeks challenge.
:b4:<Mentat> 1) A new unique superhero of your own design
:b4:<Mentat> 2) Must be from basic human stock and recognizably as human but may have extra appendages such as wings, tails, etc
:b4:<Mentat> 3) May have a sidekick (optional), sidekick does not have to be human
:b4:<Mentat> 4) Must be rendered with a cel shading or toon shading effect (comic book style)
:b4:<Mentat> 5) No background other than a solid color (any color)
:b4:<Mentat> oh yes Super Villains can be substituted

So get yer Z all sharpened up and get busy ! The challenge is afoot. Post your images here close to Monday as possible. If you can't wait that's cool too I guess....Happy Zbrushing

You say the challenge is a foot? Is it a superhero, or a foot? Or a superhero foot?

Can we recycle an older model?

Mentat7
10-29-02, 07:26 AM
No recycling please. It is preferred that you make something new. :)

:b3:Oh and let me stress the importance of number 4. It must be rendered with a cel/toon shading effect in the style of comic book art. You may not use an external app to accomplish this. It must be done in ZBrush.

We started something like this some time ago but it was short lived for many reasons. It is nice to see the idea reintroduced and having some succes. It might even get me to do something uncharacteristic.

well I am finding this alot harder of a project that I had first envisioned...Number 1 the toon shader is a tricky material for me..since I have never used it. I also made my hero some boots with adaptive skinning...after dividing and smoothing several times they still had that low poly look, but they are actually high poly..so I dont understand what happened..so I could use some help if anyone has any suggestions in that department...she still doesnt have a face or the right hair yet...but this is definitely a learning experience for me...so here is the beginning of my hero chick ...all z and toon shader cept for the fire

Toon Shading:ToonShader.zip (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_file-1035956359bbi.zip)

Don't forget that it has to be toon shaded. The material I used has Specular added, but for skin and cloth, you would probably want to take Specular out. This is my best shot. Maybe someone can come up with some enhanced 'toon-lines'.

EDIT: ... someone did...

Mik
10-30-02, 08:26 AM
I used the standard toonshader, I think it came with ZBrush (but you have to load it), with the following modifications to the material settings.

I'll post an update soon.

I thought I would give a few of my own observations. You may take them or leave them as you like. First let me start by saying this is NOT the hero I am working on. It is a test setup using a basic figure, some 3d primitives and a few recycled parts and is meant to illustrate what I am talking about.

Let's start with comic book style art.
First There are basically three stages to comic style drawing that transfer well to ZBrush.

:b3: Pencil (or blueline) drawing. This is the stage in which the first concepts are layed out on the storyboard. It is at this stage that changes and adjustments can be easily made. The equivalent in ZBrush would be the basic modeling stage. Don't worry about color or shading at this point. Focus on the geometry. As you have probably already noticed if your figure has to many angles or bumps on the surface you will get a very distorted toon shading. You can see this happening in Fouad's post. The way to overcome this is by following the simple rule that less is more. If you add lots of muscles (or anything else for that matter) make sure they have smooth surfaces and that the lines are gentle, not angular and harsh (unless you are after that effect). The more "noise" you introduce into the mesh the more distortion you will experience with the toon shader.

:b3: Inking: This is the stage when the hard lines are drawn on the paper. Usually traced over the pencil drawing but some liberty is taken as well at this stage for changes etc. Also most of the hard shading is done at this time too. Shadows are actually drawn in. Later on during the coloring process color is used to enhance the shadow affects but the main "umph" of the shadows comes into play at this stage. The equivalent in Zbrush would be the application and tweaking of the material. The toon shader and toony7 shader are very good but to get optimum performance you need to tweak them. Try adjusting the graphs on both the S1 and S2 shader channels in the toony7 Material. Ambient and diffusion light settings in the material will have an affect as well. You can also increase the HDRI setting to brighten it up. Remember that even in the darkest of comics the colors are very vibrant. The shadows are very deep. It is an illustrative style you are after and it is very different from the typical ZBrush work that most people are accustomed to.

:b3: Coloring: During this stage of the comic the colors are layed down. Light and dark values are used to enhance the highlights and shadows that have been basically boxed in during the inking phase. Color blends are added to give certain tones a warmer feeling (skin for example). The equivalent for this in ZBrush would be the same....adding the color to your figures. Simply select the simple brush tool and a medium color. Set the RGB value to 5 or so and wash the color over the area you are focusing on. Flood it with the base color. Then change to a darker value of the same color and add the shading. Then change to a lighter value of the same color (or use a complementary color) and add highlights. You will be able to see the effects immediately since you have already added your material in the previous stage. No need to get fancy with color textures and such. The comic style is much more illustrative than it is painterly. Coloring is actually very easy once you get the hang of it. Now if you are after an Airbrushed look then by all means adjust your colors and blend them more to fit the bill. You have many options at this stage but I am focusing on what is shown in the image below at this time.

So how do you bring this all together? Well first create your figure, props, etc. Make sure all the surface areas are "smooth" and that you have good clean lines. Fill the objects with white. Modify your toon shader material and apply it to your objects as you place them in your scene (or just paint it over all of them after you have dropped them...doesn't really matter). Then do you coloring. It helps to keep dissimilar colored objects on seperate layers when doing this. Set your light settings. The lighting is VERY important. You are striving for vibrancy in your render. Experiment with the lights! And there you have it.

This is just an abreviated description for drawing comic book style art and is presented for easy digestion. :D

One other note of interest: Comic book characters are always portrayed as heroic and epic. The stance and pose of the character is vital in portraying the "character" of the character. When is the last time you have seen Iron Man posed in a slouching slovenly manner? Now you get the pictre........

Now bring on the heroes!! It's Clobberin' Time!!

By the way here is the modified toony7 material I used in the image below.

Regarding the stance and pose of Comic Book Heroes: There is also a "Heroic Proportions" guide that is different from normal proportions. I am referring to the proportional relations of size and position between torso, head, arm, legs, etc. I believe that Normal Proportions are a Man is about 6(?) heads tall, and Heroic Proportions are about 7.5(?) heads tall, for example. I'm not sure about my numbers, but you get the idea. It may sound like a subtle difference, but Comics and advertising work is often done in Heroic proportions because they look significantly better if you are trying to illustrate the 'ideal' man or woman.

Mahlikus: :tu:

Thanks for the correct numbers. (See next post.)
Yes, Dwarf or Juggernaut proportions. :)

Mahlikus The Black
10-30-02, 02:03 PM
8 heads normal, 9&1/2 for hero/model but it varies sooo much it really doesnt matter. Some Thick, muscular figures can be drawn as 5&1/2 all the way down to 3 heads so go figure! Its all in the artist's style. For comic stuff, its more in the lighting, camera angle, and facial/physical expression.
Combine that with good paneling, color theory, a damn good inker...ah..theres to much to think about...*head starts hurting*

Hi Fouad,

May I offer some suggestions?

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1036014083ukp.jpg

For his Left arm...straighten it out a little and turn the hand into a fist.

For his Right arm...change the angle and rotation of the bend...tuck the elbow in closer to the ribcage and make the forearm and fist project out at about a 110 degree angle from that.

Give the entire figure more curvature.

Make the Left leg straighter with less bend in the knee.

Bend the right leg more...bring it in closer to the stomach.

Just some suggestions buddy. I like the costume. What is his name going to be?

I have nothing to add when it comes to 121...save the model needs a head. ;)
J/K. :D

The only thing that is catching my eye is the models left leg. Comparing the hip with the thigh and knee (all the way down to the foot) the rotation seems off. I wouldnt know how you could open up the hip to better suit the leg position. Maybe just a little hip rotation to the front..just by about 5 to 15 degrees. Thats all. You know what though, it isnt that big of a deal. Especially if you consider if it is a woman your making. Their poses are more graceful and dynamic..or at least can be. Looking at in now with this thought in mnid. Looks like a mid-dance stance. Very beautiful!
Also, that toonshader is amazingly beautiful Mentat. I have a question now..*blush*
Are there different toonshaders in there? By the Highlight difference from orange to the light blue metal...it seams so...but I dunno.
Pretty kickin stuff!
Cant wait to see more!

Mentat7

Actually Mal that character is War...the Male member of the team....the hip looks awkward because of the dingy cover looking thing I put over his groin....it covers the hip in the wrong place (and contributes to his feminine look along with the zsphere chest...). And it is only one toonshader........the rest of the effect is created with the use of lights and color.

IDOL-Man update:

OH, yeah, original Idol design is from Pixolator's Golden Rusted Idol tutorial, for those few who didn't know it.

ALL ZBrush, except for the text and the border. JLM

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1036316914pub.jpg

:b3: I used AA/Half, and I use Lighting and Materials together, to achieve the effects.

:b3: To get a decent shadow, about 150 rays minimum must be used. Some render time is required.

:b4: It was easier to just give you the files than to create a detailed tutorial. Obviously, you can learn exactly how to do it by examining the settings on the Lights and Materials.

Files:

PencilInkShaderA_tut.ZMT
PencilInkShaderB_tut.ZMT
PencilInkShaderC_tut.ZMT
PencilAndInkA_tut.ZLI
PencilAndInkB_tut.ZLI
PencilAndInkC_tut.ZLI
PencilAndInkD_tut.ZLI

I can't remember for sure from my experiments, but I think I used the C and D .ZLI file with the C .ZMT file.

All of these superheros are turning out so wonderfully, from EZ and his HippoMan SharkRider, to Fouad's soaring hero. I really like what Jaycephus has done with our resident idol (if you don't share this technique, we will all come to get you! ;) ). Mahlikus, your hero does resemble a Thundercat, and I think it's great! Deb, I loved your first entry, but the second definitely rocks! Ron, I love the colors on your DollyWoman (sorry...no name shown  ), great boobage, and the colors you have used are very comic book vivid. Lonnie, can't wait to see War and Peace. The concept is really fascinating (also, thanks for initiating this week's challenge. It has been loads of fun). Robo, I can't help but laugh at your dynamic duo of mayhem.

I know I have not mentioned all here, but they are all great, and I am glad to see the amount of participation here. I hope we will see more entries in following weeks, and more visitors to our Monday night chats. Remember, the room is #zbrush3 and is on sorcery.net

I couldn't resist a third and final attempt. This would be White Lightning's partner in crime(fighting). Her name is MoonShine.

Introducing: BrewBelly and his loyal sidekick Mutt...
Some facts about this bumbling duo;

BrewBelly:
Faster than a bar fly, able to drink 32 oz. in a single gulp... its a couch potatoe, its a whino, no its BrewBelly!!!
Sonar Slur= He slurs his speech so bad that the villains go deaf!
Belch Quaker= He belches with the force of an earthquake!(seven on the richter scale)
The Brew Belly Bowler= A fierce attack in which anyone standing in his way gets pummeled like a bowling pin!
The Puker= He gags all those around him by puking!

Mutt:
Faster than a bunny rabbit on steroids,
Able to leap six foot fences in a single bound... its a dog, its an inbreed, no its Mutt!!!
The flea kicker= He scratches himself and infests the villains with fleas and ticks!
The Carpet Cleaner= He rubs his butt on the carpet generating massive amounts of static electricity... he then zaps his opponents with his wet nose!
The Leg Humper= A strange move indeed, this one needs no explanation nor is it completely understood!
The wet Shaker: After covering himself with moisture he shakes it off into the villains eyes!

LOL;~)

Now onto my comments on others work!

Robotalk: Hilarious stuff... you got me rolling on the floor... great job!
Ron Harris: I like all of your entries! Nicely done... the flames coming out of the fingers of Sunspot is too cool! And "Shard" and "Sliver" are really creative work! Great job too!
Fouad B.: You did a fine job on this characters pose... very dynamic!!! Great job!
MahilikusTheBlack: Excellent job on this character! It reminds me too of the Thundercats, Hoooo!!
Jaycephus: Your idol man is cool... I am really impressed with the B&W effects! Thanks for sharing your technique!
Mik: "Johnny Planthand" is quite a unique approach! Great job... I really like the shader you used for this! Thanks for sharing as well!
Mentat7: Your character is very well done... Great pose and comic look! Thanks for all the info!
KenH.:Nicely done! Good posing... and I'd hate to mess with anyone who can punch like a Kangaroo! LOL
Slosh: Your character "Moonshine" is my favorite of yours so far allthough "White Lightning" is pretty cool looking as well! Your duo would fit in well with my duo! *hiccup* The style is reminescent of some of the older DC artists!Has a good comic quality as well! Great job!
EZ: The hippo on the shark is incredibly creative... I like it! Well done!
DLee: I really love the job you did on this character! The clothing, the cape, the shaders... all very well done! Great Pose too!

Heres my submission :D
I was only able to put about 45 mintues into it unfortunately, I might change it a bit if I have time later.

"Jello-Man"
No one is sure who or what jello man is, but as long as he keeps on battling evil no one is going to ask. His most common form is shown here, but he frequently morphs extra limbs etc.

EDIT: I resized the image for easier downloading, and added a toonified version of "ZSphere Man!" just for fun :D

Had a go at this but didn't get anywhere close to what I set out to do. He was supposed to be a sidekick, hence the harness on his body. And thats supossed to be oriental style armour on his legs.

Also forgot the rules. "Must be from basic human stock", well .. nearly :) . "No background but solid color", ups, well it is only fog applied to simulate a wall.

Anyway here is .. erhm... Ratman, defender of Environmental polluters everywhere. :D

EDIT: removed fog, changed colors slightly and added some quick tattoos with a stencil set to Wrap mode.
EDIT #2: LOL, forgot to add a jaw. Villains who growl and roar alot tend to need this. :)

And congrats to all who posted on this challenge, good images all around.

In between naps (sicker than a dog) I did up the group pic. Hope no one minds.

This challenge seems to have brought out some really cool tips. I'm glad to see everyone sharing new techniques. Makes having these challenges worth while. Mentat will be choosing the next person to come up with a theme (it's a random choice from those in irc. The reason we decided to do that is so we have the person there to discuss and work out the details before posting.) Ron will be posting the theme later.

KenH I'm sorry, I thought I had everyone's pic. I usually save them in a directory as they come up. Missed it...

Hey D, what a nice thing for you to do. When you put them all together like this it looks quite impressive indeed!!

Dumb question: How would I get involved in the discussion. I haven't a clue. Can you give me some instructions - anyone?

Thanks
