Hi The Namek.
I like your picture but I think you can improve
it by:
:b3:Putting some more source lights to soften the shadows
:b3: giving some bevelings to the shelf's edges
:b3: Instead of simply putting wall and floor textures on 2d plane you can 'model' the wall
and floor
:b3: if you don't have yet Bill Flemings books
of 3d photorealism toolkit,get them,they were really useful for me

I look forward to seeing your progress!

I love the textures you have in this image. It's very rich. And I especially like the metallic (brass?) stand for the crystal ball. Keep going on this, it should prove to be a wonderful image. I agree about the lighting..Try perhaps increasing the global diffuse settings in the light panel. That will help bring some more overall light into the scene and will also help with the shadows.
