View Full Version : Seagull.
I had wanted some seagulls for a Vue image I was doing, so initially modelled a seagull with the standard sphere because I felt I could do that quicker than using Zspheres, as I am more practiced with it. When I looked at the file size it was 6.77 MB, I realised a few of those in the Vue image, and it would crash before I had finished it. So I gave it a go with Zspheres using adaptive skin and this was the result, it was done quickly, so not the best seagull around, but I have included the Vue image and I feel it served it’s purpose.
After recently putting a Vue image on Renderosity that had items modelled in Z, somebody commented that they purchased Z some time ago, but had not been aware that Z was that versatile regarding modelling. For those that use Z with other apps but don’t display on other galleries, it might help other people if they see what Z can do. It seems a lot are aware that you can morph Poser figures, but obviously not so aware of Z models being used in other apps.

In the top picture they look a little flat, but it loooks very good in the full picture. I like the bird that's landing, and good job not repeating the same position on all of your gulls. :tu: :tu:

a excellent image..dm.. i love that bird.. thanks for showing us a model..
Very impressive. the modeling of the gulls is interesting. The final results have added significantly to this image. :) :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

You may be right that it's "not the best seagull around" - but, quickly modelled or not, it's certainly the best one I've seen! And it works well in the Vue scene too. Good work! :tu: :tu: :tu:
A little 121 on the full scene. I had a problem for a while with the bird shadows on the sand - there seemed to be one too many shadows for the birds. I eventually realised this was because I hadn't noticed the central gull against the background of the distant hill. I think he would be better removed or repositioned against a different background so that he is more obviously visible. A very minor point though, and maybe something to do with differences in gamma settings on our respective monitors.
EDITED: Sorry, forgot to say thank you for showing us the ZSphere model on which the gull is based.
Hey great modelling and the texturing matches too. On the second image the seagulls look so realistic !! :tu: :tu:

Seems to me that you modelled just enough detail for the application. The entire scene works quite well.
Beautiful, the seagulls. Couldn't there be (asking shy) 1 for the Vue free stuff?
Awesome idea, gebe! I have tried to create my own, but come up with something that looks like a demented mermaid. :D Also still can't figuree out how to export Zspheres as obj even after appliying skin
These are definately the best seagulls I have seen

Dave!!!! great gulls....I shall have to try your pattern for the gull zif....sometimes a model doesnt have to be picture perfect ot fit into the picture perfectly....great job and great to see you posting... :tu: :tu: :tu:
Thanks for the interest and comments everyone, it’s a good way to keep my Z practice in while I devote sometime to getting my other apps conquered. I have had Vue for about a year and a half, but in that time, I had 2 finished images and two partly finished. I have just started to use it again after over a year of not touching it at all; I had spent all my time on Z.
Good spotting Bill, the seagull against the background of the island is not easily visible, I did debate moving it before rendering, but maybe wrongly decided, that in reality something’s would not be that visible in certain lights and against some backgrounds. The thinking was that it would be unrealistic to have all of them spread around the light areas. I had not thought about the shadow confusing people who did not realise that it was there, because obviously I did, so it is a valid point.
You are right Juandel, we need to get the news out that you don’t necessarily have to blow your brains out with complicated very expensive software to produce models, when you can do them a whole lot easier, and as well in Z.
On your point Ron, I think you are right, depending on what you intend to use the model for, over complication is not always necessary. If I needed it for a close up, I would obviously then have to do shaper detail.
Gebe and SQS yes I would put it in the free stuff and also on the Z forum, but because of doing it quickly, and dividing the polygons more than I would have done had I had more time to model carefully, it still came out over 3MB. That was a lot better than 6.77MB that the original effort had resulted in, but I feel probably people will not want to be bothered with a 3MB download for a seagull. I will when time allows, redo it more carefully to bring the file size down, but if anybody feels that they don’t mind the size of the file let me know and I will put it on. The only problem I get myself with uploading larger files but not downloading, is my ISP cuts me off sometimes after 10mins as being inactive, which is illogical surely something should register that I am uploading.

WOW, Dave, that is very generous! I would probably use one or two on occasion. The ones I have now, downloaded from somewhere, are pretty plain and will now do in a close up. I could use those in the bakground and you wonderful ones in the foreground. See, I am off on a tangent already!
