View Full Version : Light Test
I wanted to see how Global Light Mapping worked, not sure if I understand it :) But I created the diffuse and specular map for this image. Then I kept the same point lighting that I used for the maps and turned off the Suns and set the global ambience down to zero.
The result I did like, a sharp contrast between light and dark areas.

Interesting Digits. It is nice to see that the master is still there, lurking in the background. Thanks for sharing this information, I am sure that I can make use of your methodology.

Thanks guys, nice to know I ain't forgotten ;) Aside from lack of time, also have had a lack of inspiration lately. But I feel it coming back with all the great stuff I have been seeing lately.
I continued my light experiment on a doodle I made with my Depth Stroke script and I am really pleased with the contrast that resulted. No suns in this one, only point lights and 0 global ambience. Using the global light mapping I think adds specularity highlights to the material and leaving the lights in the same arrangement seems to heighten the color. (course it could be all in my mind)

Thanks for viewing. As for this image I haven't got a clue what I should call it. Kinda reminds me of those Big Daddy Rat models of hot rods when I was a kid.

Digits, I'm sure there's a lot "in your mind", and I'm no stranger to the creative doldrums as well. The global lighting thing is indeed a very mysterious thing. I've dabbled with it also to make custom specular maps. It would be interestng to see these images rendered with the default lighting just for comparison. (Then I can pick up this thread to use in Upham's compilation for the lighting section ;) ) Very interesting stuff.
Hi Zoid!
This is pretty close to the default settings with two suns and no global mapping. There are 6 other color point lights as in the original. As you can see there is a marked difference in ambience and color in the image that I think was enhanced in the original by using this technique.

Hi Digits,
great info there. Lighting is one of those things that makes, or breaks an image - as I'm sure you know very well. The information you have shared should be of help to all of us. My thanks :tu: :) :tu:

zooper paintings, Floyd! note to myself: finally go play with those settings and: next script you load is depthstroke, dumbhead! when i ran the updated version for the first time i overdid a bit and escaped the painting process after about 30 minutes (i guess i have to reduce the repeat settings next time) :) + :tu: :tu: :tu:
