This is the first character in a complete scene, named above...
I did the first Black And White complete scene here a long time ago, and this is going to be a complete scene with all the characters, and the entire scene rendered all in one material, and overpainting done on the monotone render...
There will be this dude, his antagonist, a barfly floozy Gnome, the Bartender Gnome, and at least one more character...

Hope you enjoy the results of my bizarre imagination, combined with a conversation with a close friend on the cultural significance of Garden Gnomes in certain societies...

(I will be rendering elements seperately, and compositing them, and since I am using the same saved lighting on each element, compositing makes for a more efficient and more controlled workflow for me... )

Hey he is pretty kewl looking. I was sitting here looking at him...and thinking that he might have a Lawn Jockey as a running buddy :) Ron is warped also. I really like this character so far, SC. Looking forward to more developments.

Thanks to all who enjoyed this...
And for you Dickie, here's the model before painting, fresh from the render...

The idea is that the entire scene, the environment, and all the 'props' will all be made and rendered in this exact material, with this exact lighting, and will then be overpainted with ZAdd off.
I am approaching 57 years old, and I wanted to see if I could achieve the illustrative look of the childrens' books I saw when I was much younger...These were done using a traditional ink drawing, followed by watercolour washes, and it is this style I want for the entire piece, but with a 'Stonecutter Twist'...

He's so cool! I like a clean model...but that's just my preference. So as I understand it, Stonecutter, ya take the model above and just paint right on top of him. Kinda like transluscent inks...neat idea...and a useful one if the top render is any indication...gotta
try it myself...: ) Thanks for sharing your work...

I love the curl/snarl in his lip like he's winding up to shout some obscenity. The proportions are cool too, it really makes this little gnome have personality.

Thanx Guys... :D
Actually Dickie, I render the model, and paint on the render...So the unpainted one is a 'before', the other the 'after'...
Then any paint program can add the color, in ZBrush the procedure being to turn off ZAdd, and import the render as a texture...Setting the document size the same as the render, and using 'Flat Color' material, so your image is unaffected by light and shadow, you 'Fill' the layer, and you're ready to go...
The portraits I posted on the last Monday Night Challenge thread were done this way as well...
