Once you 'snapshot' an object to the canvas, you can work in 2.5D...This means for instance, that you can use the simple brush, choose an alpha, and texture, paint, whatever. If you just want to add color, you set RGB on...If you want just material, you set M on...If you want material, plus color, choose MRGBZ... :)
Hope this answers your question...
(You can also use any other tool, the 'hook brush' for instance...)

dont forget to turn off ZADD so you dont add bulk to the object.

just lower the intesity in the draw panel and take add off... to replace material press mrgb and color press rgb in the draw panel... lets say you want to add a material with different settings but you want to keep the same material...heres what you can do.. copy the material you using then in a different space import that same material so that now you have 2 copys of it in your materials panel..adjust the second copy to give you a different material effect.. but be careful about the settings in the second copy because you dont want to mess with the diffuse, ambient, noise curve to much... just try it and youll see what im talking about..
