View Full Version : zcut objects and multimarker tool

I tried to use a sphere cut through the center with a cylinder just to test this capability. Both items had markers with materials and textures set when created, the cylinder in the middle of the sphere set to zcut so it appeared to make a hole through the sphere but I clear the layer and the multimarker tool won't draw the combination of the two with zcut active, rather like two zadd objects.

Can I get a boolean negative cut type object using zcut and the multimarker tool out of Zbrush as a polymesh? I don't want to keep butting my head up against the wall if it can't be done. I have created 2 or more part objects (the pacifier is one shown in my fun stuff thread) and exported those as a polymesh using the multimarker tool without a problem so I'm not sure what's up here.

For the multi-marker to work with the ZCut option you need to set the "DRAW" button to "on" in the Marker pallette. That way, the multi-marker will recall which objects are drawn with ZAdd, ZCut, or ZSub. It would either be the pallette labelled "Marker" or if that pallette is still iconized at the top of your screen, it's the icon that looks like an arrow.

Unfortunately, currently multimarkers using ZCut or ZSub when converted to a polymesh only convert it as if all of the tools had "ZAdd" on.

Thanks for the answer, my head was getting tired of that wall. It's kinda disappointing to read that I can't get obj models out with boolean type cuts.

you might want to try apply a alpha to your model and hiding points to make a boolean object.

Hi Diana . . . :)

The answer to your question is Yes & NO. 1st: If you just want to make a "MultiMarker" object from other objects that have a "Zcut" hole in some of them, then there should be no problem. 2nd: If you are thinking of converting the "MultiMarker" group object into a "PolyMesh" object with "ZCut" holes in them, then you can not do this in Zbrush at this time. Also, when you "Zcut or Zsub" a hole into an object, it does not cut completely through. Meaning, you cannot boolean cut a hole completely through an object in ZBrush. :)

Before you do anything, go to the "Marker / Modifiers" window & select all 8 of the buttons so they are green. This tells Zbrush to remember everything about each object that you place a "Marker" for. ;)

Now, draw a Sphere on the screen / place a Marker for the sphere / select the cylinder tool & "Zcut" a hole into the Sphere / when you have the hole sized & positioned like you want, place a Marker for the cylinder / select the "MulitMarker" tool & draw a little object on the screen away from the other objects, for a test. If everything worked properly, you should see a small "MultiMarker" group object on the screen with a hole cut into it. You can now select the "Ctrl + N "keys to clear the canvas, & redraw your "MultiMarker" group object back onto the screen, resize it & locate it where you want it. :)

One more thing - once you draw your "MultiMarker" group object onto the screen, you can - position / scale / rotate / deform / or reshape it in any way, the same as you would with any standard object from the objects panel. In the image below, I created a "MultiMarker" object using a sphere & "Zcut" 3 different holes with different objects. I then selected the "MultiMarker" tool to create a group object & cloned then rotated each cloned object to the positions in the image. As you can see, everything worked out fine. ;)

If you have any further problems or questions with the "MultiMarker" tool, please e-mail me & I will give you further instructions on the use of this tool. I hope this has helped you some & you have a good one . . . Mark.

I've made it through the part where I have a zcut object I can draw with the multimarker tool but I'm have no way to get it out of ZBrush with the cut intact to have a true boolean cut obj model.

I noticed I can't see through the object when cut, thought it was because my background was black. Didn't realize zcut can't cut a through hole, so even if I could get the cut model out, it wouldn't be what I wanted anyway, ratz.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I can't there from here I guess, maybe someday.

Hi again Diana . . . :)

Yes, your right about not being able to cut through an object. Hopefully in a future version, something will be implemented to permit a true boolean cut through an object. In the image below, I "Zcut" the corner of the Cube away with a Sphere, but as you can see, the corner that should be cut away, is still there & in the front side of the cube, I cut a hole with a cylinder that was twice as long as the cube is deep, but you can still see a bottom. I call it a "Fool'Ya" type of cut or an "Illusion Cut". Although you can't do a Boolean Cut right now in ZBrush, you can still get very good results with the "ZCut" function for other types of cuts. ;)

Anyway, I'm glad that you got the information you were looking for & you have a good one . . . Mark.

Hi EZ . . . :)

The only problem with using the "Hide Points" function is illustrated in the image below. I divided the Sphere to the max, ( 261,000 + ) polygons, that's as far as you can go, & after hiding the selected points you can see all the jaggies around the cut edges. But I thank you for your thoughts & suggestions & you have a good one . . . Mark.

try just adding your main background layer then add another layer then use your alpha MRGBZ image with the Erace TOOL

you can't do side view only straight threw shots

Thanks for the script EZ. Y'all have been more than generous with your suggestions and demonstrations!

I've done the hide point, cut a jaggy arrow through a sphere on both sides, but I don't see how I can get from this to a polymesh I can export with the holes still in it. I guess this is as far as I can go now, eh?

here is one of the method i said plus a new one these are just fakes but you can't export with a hole sorry..boolean2.txt (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_file-1016682404idm.txt) :tu: the method shows how to cut a hole in a side angel.
let it finish to the end i added some Delay Code to slow the ending down.
and here it just a lil differnt
