Helllo Everyone!

I just wanted to post a quick note to let anyone who is interested know my new book titled ZBrush Digital Sculpting: Human Anatomy has published and is available now via Amazon</a> and bookstores. Its the followup to ZBrush Character Creation. This book is a guided sculpture tutorial through the entire process of sculpting a heroic male figure from the insides out. I have posted the Amazon link here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0470450266/ref=s9_simi_gw_s0_p14_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=15EFHBTYHVQGGMEPG8BD&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846) as well as a Sample chapter here. (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27176595%27,%27cover.jpg%27,1,0% 29)
The book starts with a chapter on building a Maya or ZSphere base model in the 8 head proportional cannon. We discuss different proportions and why the 8 head cannon is so easy to use and works well for heroic figures. From there we move into sculpting a rough gesture version of the figure massing in the major forms of the body. From there we develop a planar version of the full figure to help understand how planes and angles affect the way form reads.

planar.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27176597%27,%27planar.jpg%27,1,0 %29)

The rest of the book covers the parts of the body. The head is covered from the skull to the muscles to the fat and flesh. The rest of the body is addressed in a similar fashion. For each part we will look at the major muscle groups, the shapes they create, bony landmarks on the surface and how to use the ZBrush brushes to create these forms and refine them to a finish. Later chapters detail how to create costume elements, how to remesh the figure in ZBrush or using NEX tool for Maya, as well as a texture chapter by Eric Keller on how to create a full body texture map and render the figure in Maya with SSS. I also include a full set of high resolution texture and sculpting ref photos courtesy of 3d.sk

The DVD features several narrated tutorials as well as long videos showing the process I used to sculpt the various parts of the body.

arm.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27176601%27,%27arm.jpg%27,1,0%29 )

The sculpting process shown is my preferred method of working. It uses the Move, Standard, Claytubes, and Flatten brushes heavily. It also includes some of the new ZBrush brushes such as form and polish as well as the Depth masking control. New brush workflows and changes to the brush behaviors and interface are covered as they come up. My sculpting workflow is quite simple, I reply on a limited number of brushes and masks to create all my forms. I believe this is a great way to learn to sculpt as well since it avoids getting lost in a sea of options and loosing sight of the goal.

I worked on the book for over an year and I am very excited to share it with you all. As I was working on the book I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to do over 40 hours of cadaver lab time in dissections. I feel that this experience helped shape the book and added to the information I was able to communicate.

Thanks to everyone who has purchased this or my previous book. Thanks as well to those who send me emails and keep in touch. I love hearing from other artists who find these books useful! Happy sculpting!

Best of luck with the "new kid".
Sold the movie rights yet?

Oh I get it, the book as a kid. I was thinking far to literal : D

Brad Pitt as me... no not likely maybe that fat kid in Superbad but less funny
: D

or perhaps the child of Drew Carey and Stephen Fry... but again less funny : D

Thanks man!

Hi Scott,

Just wanted to take a moment and say thanks for the great books.

I bought your first book when it came out and it was probably one of the best instructional/educational books I've ever picked up. What made it better than most was all the little tips, tricks and tid bits scattered throughout the book, along with the great general content.

So when your latest book came out, there was no question on wether or not to order it. I'm only about 1/3 of the way through it, but I must say, I'm quite pleased with this book as well. What makes this book so great is the bridging of the gap between the technical use of ZBrush, and the practical application of anatomy, principles of sculpture, and design. Most books tend to be either one or the other.

I'm sure I sound like a bit of a kiss ass here :), but after many years of experience with marginal educational products (classes, books, DVDs etc.), it's great to see a product that really delivers and is much more valuable than the actual cost of the item.

OK. That's enough for now. I don't want you to go getting too big of a head on us. ;)

Keep up the great work and thanks for the information and inspiration.

Greatest compliment I can pay you.

Went out jogging, tried adding an extra mile to the route.
On way back had about a half mile left.
Ran into MailPerson ( "mailman" is a female).
Should note that at this point, sweating, freezing and having
suicidal thoughts.
Frances, mailperson, yells out she has a package
for me
If I don't take it, because of it's size, she won't deliver until
tomorrow.
She says package looks like a book, do I want to take it now.
Any other book, any other author, keep until tomorrow.
Took the book, finished the run.
One comment jumps immediately to mind.

Did it have to weigh that much?

If all else fails will use for doorstop.:D

Scott

The books great. Looking forward to getting stuck in to sculpting, once I finish what I'm doing.

I was wondering if this would be a reasonable forum to ask form some clarification on something in the book?

Awesome book. First I read a chapter and learned a lot, but then I watched the videos for it and followed it along with the book and I saw the light.

It is indeed a wonderful book, and to my great surprise and pleasure very usable by a beginner like I am.
I decided to try both approach, building a maya mesh (in my case in silo, it's easy to adapt Scott's instructions since you only need tools you will find in most modeling software) and the zsphere approach and for my first try decided to go with the silo mesh (next one will be with the zsphere model since I do plane on revisiting the book a couple of times :)
But I also decided to follow another piece of advice found in the book and the human male from anatomytools.com and received it today with the matching skull. I already had the wallchart and the female anatomy so I knew I wouldn't be disappointed, but honestly, I was blown away, what a marvelous piece of art. I have no doubt it will help me tremendously, but seeing those two amazing sculptures is also a joy for the eyes during the breaks (and a great motivation too). Soon, I will open a thread in the main forum to try and show my progress even if I'm a bit embarrassed to show my beginner stuff, I have heard, the zbrush community is very open minded so it should be fine :)
Mr. Spencer, thanks again fro this great book :)

I loved your last one so I'll just have to get some things out of the way first, and then I'll buy it for sure :)

Incredible book. I love it. Scott does an amazing job of explaining not only how to sculpt the anatomy, but WHY things work together like they do. As an added bonus, he shows how to create and add accessories to characters, which for me is a major plus. I'd highly recommend this to not only ZB users, but also anyone looking to improve their anatomy modeling skills regardless of the software. Best ZB book out there (since Scott's last book, that is.)

Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to drop in and say thanks to you all for the kind comments. Its such a thrill to know you all find the book useful! The best part of writing these is hearing from other artists who find something helpful in the shared techniques. Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts!

As always feel free to drop me an email if you have any questions as you work through the book.

Best!

Hey Scott, I just wanted to thank you for making this book. For someone like me, who is trying to learn traditional art skills at the same time as all the digital tools available to me, I've literally never seen a better resource. I've been looking for something like this for a while.
