I have been playing around with allsorts of materials trying to make a good skin material, well this is my best one yet.

If you have any skins human or beast then why not share them on this thread, it will help all us Zbrushers pick up more pace in the materials department.

If you tried the zmt above, you would have found problems with it, it seems. Sorry about that, so here it is again, but this time zipped up:

Please give me suggestions for my web site!

In the spirit of sharing (and not at all to take away from picsas' great contribution!), here is the material that I came up with for my skin. I've been meaning to give it out for a while now, and thought that a thread with various skin materials would be a great addition.

BasicFlesh.ZMT (http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_file-1016440790liq.zmt)

Here are two examples of it in use, both showing the cheek with a different skin texture for each. http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1016441170cty.jpg

Thanks Aurick, thats a cool idea so I have changed the title of the thread, as we can all learn from each others creations.

I don't use too many materials as I prefer to paint with Bmps within Texture Master.

So...here's some "skin" I created to paint with. ;)

They are seamless.

Those are very nice textures, Kathy!

They made me realize something that I should have mentioned in my post. I think that great skin is about 50/50 between the texture and the material. My BasicFlesh.zmt, above, doesn't look anything like skin by itself. But with minor tweaking of things like ambience and color bump it gives an excellent enhancement to your skin texture by providing some translucency to the skin and a hint of oiliness on the texture's bright spots.

It would be interesting to see what these textures look like with that material underneath them...

Thanks for sharing.

Another thing Aurick is that, as in old technicolor movies, lighting tones and intensity can also alter skin... :)

Great timing for this thread picsas - for only the second time in all my graphic endeavors I'm looking to create a semi-realistic skin. Flesh is indeed not the easiest of materials to replicate. Funny how a material which varies so widely in nature is immediately seen as fake so often in graphics. As Aurick mentions (hi Aurick), the translucent quality is the most difficult. Translucency is easily faked on flat surfaces but is harder to fake on the areas that need it the most - curved surfaces. And as Stonecutter mentions (hey SC), the lighting in the scene is critical. I've come to the conclusion that no one material will work in all situations - the material must be tweaked to each specific lighting setup.

I've looked at yours, hitch2's and Aurick's materials and compared them to some I've created. Common denominators include high diffuse settings, high ambient and a nearly straight line diffuse curve - but again these should be modified for the lighting. The way I've tried to approach translucency is by using a texture in the "reflection" slot and upping the reflection slider (Skin-jd.zmt) and by using the colorizer material (skin-jd1.zmt). In both cases the curved surfaces are most effected.

Skins-jd.zip - 1MB (http://www.webperception.com/jdorsey/skins-jd.zip)

As an example of how lighting is the determining factor, If I apply Skin-jd in the Skin-jd1 scene and vice-versa, each looks horrible but are fine (I hope) in thier respective scenes.

In Skin-jd, play with the reflectivity setting and try different textures in the relection slot. In Skin-jd1, under S1 adjust the intensity and intensity curve to suit your needs. Of course you supply the skin coloring ;)

What we really need and I'm sure it's a coming is S3 and S4 to be bump and specularity slots. I can usually work around the need for a specularity map but in some situations a separate bump channel is a dire need. A skin close-up is the perfect example of when we need bump to be driven independent of color. I expect we will see this feature before long :)

Great thread picsas

looks like the skin I uploaded doesn't work and gives you an error message so I have put another version that is zipped just below it. oops
