Pixolator
11-26-09, 11:07 AM
Now that ZBrush 3.5R3 has been released, I would like to share with you a tutorial movie that demonstrates some of the new
features of R3. This movie was recorded during one of the beta cycles of R3. The newly released ZBrush 3.5R3 contains all the
features demonstrated in this movie, as well as features that have been added since then.
I hope that you'll enjoy this movie and be inspired to create your own 'polished' models using the techniques demonstrated here.
Have a happy holiday season and joyful ZBrushing:)

Aaaagh! This video is un-watchable. It buffers every thirty seconds, and I'm on a 10Mb/s cable connection. Are there any other places to view it, or a direct download somewhere?

Are there any other places to view it, or a direct download somewhere? The buffering is due to high number of simultaneous connections to the server. I can't believe the upgrades in features from R1 to R3 of ZBrush 3.5. If this is what you do with small incremental upgrades what on earth do you have in store for ZBrush 4.0?

Hey guys, if you can't constrain your comments to the toolset and the video, and not your opinions of the people who made it, it is better not to post at all. Remember, there are real human beings involved in this...it is not produced in a vacuum. Basic courtesy and manners should always apply.
As for the video, thank you very much for posting the extended version of this. It helps me get a closer look at the process that was whizzed by in the promo movie. The only comment I'd make, is that the chrome material used in the final stages is so dark it tends to obscure a good reading of the form of the piece.
I'd also be interested in seeing an extended version of the little "alien" guy made in the demo movie.

The direction of ZBrush is exciting me very much. I spent much time working quite organically and all of my days and most of my evenings on ZBrush. Soon I will be doing a little teaching which means I need to get on my Bootcamp with 3.5, in fact I have to get on there in a few hours to take advantage of the later version than the one I use on Mac. So tell me, do I need to proceed with my plan of getting a windows based machine and another monitor on my desk so that I can always stay ahead with ZBrush or is it more than likely they will run in sink at some point???????????????????????? I understand the issues and am not even wasting my time complaining, i just want to know before i shell out. P.S. I am excited at the possibilities with the hard surface tools and especially the ability to put things into poly groups by painting the surface. My mind is spinning with ideas and things to test out that I sadly dont have the time to explore, but I see an exciting xmas break coming up :-)

The Polish Brushes look amazing. Looks as if they will take some practice to really get used to them.
I've been working extensively with the Polish brushes over the last day, and I can say they are pretty amazing. They are *very* intuitive...unlike many other brushes they just sort of seem to *do* what you think they should be doing in a given situation, whether working around a curve, or flattening out a plane.
I think they will easily become the new standard brush for carving out form, when working both organically *and* with hard surfaces. They are pretty much the *flatten* brush Ive always wanted, but the old flatten brushes never delivered.
Unfortunately, I'm not as sold on the new "Paint Loops/Grooup Loops" functionality. I'm finding it very difficult to get reliable , predictable results with them. And while probably very suitable for detailing mostly organic figures and constructs, the soft organic loops they produce are still no substitute for proper modeling, deliberate geometry and precise edge creasing when trying to construct machine precise shapes with hard edges hard angles.
Hopefully I'll get better with practice, and its definitely a step in the right direction. But frankly, I think they should be expanding their topology tools and creasing functions in order to model hard surfaces and machine shapes, not relying on brush mechanics.

I agree about more retopology tools, even to optimize meshes to fit within 3d apps both for animation and inorganic stuff. I think traditional modelling will not disappear anytime soon for inorganic stuff at least. But, ZB could end to be also a great tool to quickly produce designs to later rework with more traditional tools.

I know the tools and possibilities being demonstrated are amazing. However, I suggest redoing this tutorial with a lighter background gradation or against a solid light neutral color. I find it hard to see how fine the detail is in the ending turntable. It seems the impact of such breakthrough tools has been blunted by a less than stellar presentation.
My mentor always told me: presentation is critical. It's not the most important thing, but it ranks high in the hierarchy of priorities when demonstrating an idea. Poor presentation can cause a great idea to be passed over and end in failure. It is THAT important.
You guys have worked your collective butts off. Suggestion: take sometime to breath and get fresh eyes on the stuff you are using to show off. I understand you are caught up in some very exciting stuff, please take the time to share it in a way that conveys how magnificent a job you've done.
Kudos! Keep going! :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

There's no really good place to say stuff like this, but I just wanted to mention, the new visibility options are awesome. It probably wouldnt be *as* helpful to people using unified skins, but if you work like I do and use the retopo tools to construct deliberate geometry with logical loops, the Grow, Shrink, and Outer Ring functions have all *greatly* speed up the rate at which I can assign and crease poly groups.
Also, while I havent found a way to use the Paint>Group Loops process to deliberate effect yet, the Auto Masking> Mask by Polygroups function is so helpful, it's taken up a permanent spot on my main interface now.

Thanks Pixolator & Team for R3 and the video.
R3 is really a big improvement and a good step forward, it only lacks of the GoZ-feature.
As we see in the video, ZB_R3 is now able to create also non-organical models with hard edges. Very nice.
But we also see, how long it takes for the artist to come to an almost good outline-shape of the car-model.
So my suggestion for Pixo is, why not enhance the Quicksketch-feature a lot more to use a kind of 3d-room for sketches instead of a 2d-plane, so we could simply draw a model-shape with a few outlines in 3D-Space (like spline or Nurbs-lines) and simply fill that space within the outlines with material by the click of a button or draw it out (f.e. ZSpheres etc.) The 3D-sketch-lines would act as borders, like a hull or cutting-mask.
That would reduce basic-design time a lot and avoids loosing already good areas when smoothing or changing somewhere else the surface.
I am a traditional 2D-painter and would love to work also with 3D-models in a more painter-friendly way, meaning that I can draw my outlines instead of using sculpting-derived clay-shape-techniques.

It seems like the regular video save streamer applications can't grab this video since it is embedded in a .swf format not .flv. Can anybody let me know how to download this video?

Holy ***! The new Mirror Weld mirrors polygroups and *creasing* from side to side. Creasing!
*grabs the nearest person*
Do you know how long Ive wanted to be able to Mirror Creasing in Zbrush???
Between this and the new visibility options, polygroup assignment for modeling in Zbrush just go a lot more practical.
Thank you for this.

For some odd reason, I can NEVER watch any videos (be they the tutorial videos or these showcase ones) from the zbc website using either Firefox or IE on my home computer. My work machine (same exact specs) has no problems at all. In the future it would be nice if there were alternate viewing methods for the community just in case situations like this spring up. Releasing the videos as a torrent is one of many possible solutions available.

Hey Pixolator, these are great! Really enjoyed watching the movie (once it dl'd) :)
Love the new tools, brilliant for sketching out ideas, one question though:
In order to get the uniskin edge loops you need to turn on polish right, but when I do I lose quite a bit of form on any tube or finger-like forms. Am I being thick and missing something - have ttried playing with the polish and smooth values, turning on the 'open circle'?
Should I be converting without polish to maintain form, THEN adding edge loops? That seems to give really wobbly edges to the groups...
And despite not allowing tris, I still get little knots and whorls in the topology that can't be smoothed out... maybe re-topo is the only solution, or projecting uni skin onto a lower adaptive skin cage?
Anywho, here's a little non-vehicle sketch, loving it :)
ZBrush 3.5r3, c'est magnifique!!!

Noob question on Masking by Polygroups...when this is on, and i am going only by what i saw in the video, is it where you put the cursor on the object? Over that specific group? that it masks all the other groups out? I dont have a palette like the layers in photoshop or the subtool palette that i select the polygroups that i want to work on do i? (that actually, if it isnt in there would be a nice palette to have and be able to name those polygroups) Hope that makes sense, i dont have my laptop with Z on it here at work so i was just wondering when i get to turn it on tonight how they work!! thanks!
