I was just reading through Pixologic's home page and took the features tour (why I waited until 1 month after buying, I'll never know). There was mention of the ability to unwrap a texture from your model, then you can fiddle with it. Mentat also mentions this in Caliban's recent thread on the Orc character. How do I do this? I would imagine that, without using texture master, that I could start by filling my object with a plain texture, then do all my painting, etc. The texture is updated as I do this, but aside from that I don't see how to do it.

while using texture master, check out the texture palette. You'll see your texture appearing "unwrapped" in the little preview window. When your finished with texture master, click on "Export" in the Texture palette to export your texture to a .bmp or .psd file. Then you can load it up in most graphics programs (Adobe Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro etc), even back into Zbrush, then modify it as a flat unwrapped texture.

When done, simply load it back into the texture palette (import) and your done

Hey Slosh this is easy enough to do. You must keep your object in edit mode for this to work. Just go to TOOLS>MODIFIERS>TEXTURE click on the COL>TXT button and it will create the texture for it in the Texture pallet. Easy enough? :D

EDITED: You can then fill your layer with the texture...in the LAYERS pallet choose the fill button. You can then mess with it and then use the MRGB grabber tool to grab the whole thing as a texture again.

Thanks, Lonnie! That's exactly what I was looking for!

(also thanks to Cal, though I was trying to avoid doing this in Texture Master)

You don't HAVE to use TM but it makes things much easier. You could just paint on your object using just RGB in the DRAW menu and then use the above method COL>TEXT to create the flattened texture. One advantage to using TM is that you can use all of the 2D and 2.5D tools to paint with such as the hook brush, blur, highlighter, intensity etc. Watch the Rhino tut in the TextureMaster script and you will see where Pix uses these various tools to create the lines in the Rhino's hide. Of course you can do this on the flattened texture using the procedure I have already mentioned. Very useful.....
