MNC: Round02 Mesh Modeling - Detailing a Head
We are going to utilize and old school challenge concept:
Download a base mesh and make something out of it!
The rules are simple:
:b3: Use this mesh and create your own model!
:b3: Human, non-human, good, bad, young, old..anything goes!
:b3: Challenge yourself. Use tools you never use (planer, clay, etc...).
:b3: Try to go the extra level when it comes to detail (pores, wrinkles, hair).
:b3: Above all, Have fun!!
Good Luck!
~MAH~

I'll give you an example:
I got this mesh from an ol' buddy of mine:
img014.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('166028','img014.jpg',1,0))
I turned it into this:
Taurham.jpg (javascript:zb_insimg('166033','Taurham.jpg',1,0))

BTW, when is the deadline?
smeagol

i don't think there is ... the challenge is not about time its about quality and learning from each other making good skin pores , wrinkles , hair etc.
that's my opinion <img src="http://www.zbrushcentral.com/pixo/atn.gif"> (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/faq.php?faq=vb_read_and_post#faq_zbc_display_image s)

not too sure i'll be part of this one, i know i'll have a hard time being interested.
anyway, MTB, you should reupload the file as a obj, because right now its a 3.5 file and some people might not have that yet, and it also doesn't let the mac users get involved.
Mahlikus The Black

Excellent observation spaceboy!
The OBJ is available below!
As for deadline, smeagol is right, there really will not be one anymore. We change challenges every Monday, but one can always participate no matter how much time has passed.
not too sure i'll be part of this one, i know i'll have a hard time being interested.
It is not about being interesting, it is about stepping out of your comfort zone and giving it a good ol' try. You could even model the mesh into a piece of armor, A gargoyle bust so you can play with the new noise functions....there is so much that is outside of the box because Z allows us to go there from step one. So you do try, awesome and good luck, if not, well that's cool too. Even if you don't submit anything, try something with it once at least.

Hi Mahlikus
I'm new to Z Brush Central, and was wondering if this is the right place/thread to post what I have done so far with the head mesh that you gave to work with.
I don't have a sketchbook thread in Z Brush Central yet, but was getting ready to sart one.
I've been keeping busy learning Z Brush for a few years now, but have been keeping my works in my sketchbook thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=200&t=301086&page=242&pp=15&highlight=spiritdreamer)in the Artistic Anatomy Forum over at CG Talk, now I think it is time to take the leap into Z Brush Central where I think I will be able to advance my learning of Z Brush much further with the help, support, and advice from such people such as yourself and all of the other great talents that I have seen the works of at Z Brush Central.
Thanks for the mesh, the opportunity, and the inspiration..

i didn't say interesting, i said interested, meaning keeping my own interest up. but i did play with it anyway.
there really aren't any zbrush features i haven't played with outside of maps, which i really have no need for, and honestly all my early zbrush models are heads which were made from a mesh very similar to the one you gave, did i get something new? a bit, but heads/busts just don't really do it for me right now.
things to note:
i tried the noise function and for some reason it over inflates all the meshes i use it on, instead of just focusing on the areas where it shows noise, any ideas?
i personally hate meshes with holes for eyes/mouth etc, its a pain trying to sculpt around that, i mean, i did after i closed them up, but at that point i'd just have to retopolgize or reproject anyway, so eventually i just took your mesh and made a unified skin with the neck closed off and went from there.
i'm not tryin to be difficult btw, i'm just trying to respond clearly.
heres where i got before i went to something else.

hey Mahlikus thinking about participating in this one what are the limits as far as modeling the mesh can we turn it in to unified skin or do we just use the head and only the head mesh as is?... hope you can join in this one as well since you didn't get a chance to participate in the first mnc...:D
hey space interesting head reminds me a bit of a triceratops the way the structure is on top some nice shapes going on as well.. i know what you mean by open meshes there a pain to work with since projection never works good with them that's why i usually almost always use unified skin to work with since it has a better algorithm then it did in in zbrush 3.1..;)
spaceboy412
11-11-09, 05:25 PM
yeah troy i was thinking triceratops as well. i only went to a unified skin because of the way zbrush deals with holes, you can't smooth them etc, and i wasn't in the mood to push them around, i just wanted to have fun, at the end i could easily decide to move the original mesh into place over the unified skin and project it, would have to clean up the hole projection as you said but thats not a big deal. i guess i didn't really follow the challenge, but that's okay ;)
Mahlikus The Black
11-12-09, 09:07 AM
I was thinking only the head mesh as is...but...I also do not want to put too many limits on the challenges just yet...so no limit..lol.
Interesting that this isn't a zskifferificaliciousnessicity challenge. I might actually be able to try this one. I don't have ZB3.5 installed just yet, waiting for activation code from Pixo. Since you supplied an .obj, I might be able to work it with 3.1.
I have been recently unmotivated and uninspired, but I'm hoping to change that. Glad you brought back the MNC, MTB. It was always a good thing and has become overlooked with all the professional work and sketchbooks appearing on ZBC these days.

I'm fairly new to Z Brush, new to Z Brush Central, and figured this is the right kind of challange and the right place to conquer my unknowns by learning more....So count me in.
By the way Mahlikus..THANK YOU for this great opportunity to learn..
Downloaded your mesh, and this is what I have come up with by using it so far..I want to make a helmet for him, so I can further explore the planar brushes and hard surfaces, plus learn how to do skin pores and detailing properly..and hope to get help in those areas from the talents entering into this challange.
THANKS Everyone

3Point - nice! I'd change your name to 5Points.
Sorry, Mahlikus. I kept looking at this head, and I tweaked it a couple of times. But in the end, I just couldn't think of where to go with it. It's like, I can either try to reproduce a famous face with it, turn it into an alien, make it an old wrinkly head, etc. etc. It's just too ambiguous. I know you were trying to allow for infinite directions, but I think the MNC might need a little more focus. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. Just my 2 cents. I liked your pumpkin challenge better. Wish I'd been up and running for that one. Anyway, I have 3.5 installed and activated finally, so we'll see what next week brings.
Thanks for the chance, anyway.

slosh, post whatever you got, and his name is 3.14 or PI, and MTB didn't do the pumpkin challenge, is it that hard to pay attention, you're going to get a detention . i agree 100% that these MNC's could use a bit more focus. I'm really ready for a hardsurface challenge based on vehicles, real not fantasy, but i know you didn't like that idea when i presented it awhile back.

Hi folks,
I recently bit the bullet and purchased Zbrush. In order to validate my purchase I'm going to do my darndest to improve and stay active in the community. Constructive criticism is really appreciated, so please, feel free to comment.
3Point ... I love it. Proportions are really interesting and the details are really nice.
Well...here's my entry:

Darn! Mr. Duato would have my keister in a sling for missing the obvious like that! 7th Grade Geometry, you failed me again.Who did the pumpkin thing? Oh well, guess I should come around a bit more. Anyway, pi still did a great job. I'd say he gave the best head so far, no offense to SpiritDreamer.

Decided to go with this emotion
I started to show and refine the muscles around the eyes, nose, and mouth.
I have been using a mirror and my own face as a model to study from. Not going for my likeness, but just to see how the muscles react when expressing this emotion
Highest sub devide level so far is 4
I'm still in the process of learng Z Brush, so any suggestions for improvments always welcomed and apreceated.

SolidSnakexxx...Really like that character.:) ..Wondering how he would look with those WILD looking oversized buldging eyes, like the ones that are in the statue in the link that you posted..Kind of reminded me of the lower level demons in the Last Judgement fressco by Michealangelo.
The sorrow behind the rage...expression/emotion
I worked on the mouth muscles, chin muscles, eyelid, brow and socket muscles. Using the clay tubes brush.

i actually managed to do some sculpting for the mnc and I'm happy in two ways: 1st, its good to get in touch with this community again and 2nd, I really enjoyed taking some time for myself and doing own stuff, a welcome change to the daily routine.
nice to see your entries! Great Frankenstein, 3Point14! Jazzy expression and believable proportions. Welcome aboard, JohNny45! that character has got potential, tweaking proportions a bit could help to advance him even more :)
Well, here is my doodle - the mesh (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=167044&stc=1) is divided once, IŽll try to do some detailing tonight. 121 welcome!

Woody LWG...Great start there..Amazing how you have captured the likeness at such an early stage..:tu:

Trying my hand at poly painting, and masking by cavity.
Just trying out things in Z Brush at this point in the process that are new to me.
Where i'm at now in this process is new to me, so lots of room and possabilities for taking it further i'm sure, but i'm not really sure how to get there at this point in my understanding and learned experience in Z Brush.
Any useful suggestions for improvements and taking it further would be much apreceated and welcomed.

Hi Spirit...now I'm hardly an expert, but a tip that I picked up from ZBrush Character Creation: Advanced Digital Sculpting by Scott Spencer that seems to look great when poly painting is to paint all the warm and cold spots on your face first using red and blue respectively. Really go crazy with it, because you'll cover it up mostly with the skin tone later...what you'll end up with is something that looks clown like. Then add yellow to areas where the bones are close to the skin...then lay down your skin colourn with a low opacity and build it up.
Like I said, I'm a beginner as well so I'm not the best person to be taking advice from, but it sure does seem to do the trick. You can get fancy later with speckling and breaking up the consistency with white.
Good luck.
