View Full Version : Advice for a newbie
Hey guys! I have very little time for my
Z Brush because of school and so on (I'm 15)
and that is why I'm not very good at it.
This is my second head, I know it could be
much better , so, please, give some advice.
Also, I'll be very grateful if someone shows
me how to make realistic hair or eye-lashes
and how to make bodies.

I accept all your criticism
Hi Maggie, and welcome! This head is really wonderful, so don't be too hard on yourself. In fact, it would make a great doll's head (although I have a feeling you were going for a real human). You've got the proportions very well done. To offer suggestions, as you have asked, I would maybe make it more narrow from side to side, and make the chin just a little bit large. As for hair and eyelashes, most of us are still grappling with that as well, but you can find some great tips in the Quicklinks section located at the top of the screen.
When I do hair, I usually like to mold the main crown of hair directly onto the head. I do this by masking off the face and neck, exposing only the area where hair would grow. Then use inflate just slightly, to make it stand off the head. Leave the head masked as it is, then you can use the editing tools on the hairpart without messing up the rest of your head. Once I have done that, if I want braids or long hair, or whatever, I usually do that with a separate sphere or plane 3d. The fiber brush is used by some people, but I am not happy with how it works on female figures (for me).
Keep up with the practice. I know you are busy (I remember being a teenager), but you will grow very quickly, since you have a great base talent already.

Thank you very much, guys :))
Hi maggie, this is a really good start, your proportions look good at the moment and the areas that you are lagging in will be picked up in time, providing that you keep at it. A piece of advice i could give is try to use up as much of the canvas as you can if you are just doing a head study. The bigger the model you work with, the more detail you can put into it and the better i will look.
:b3: have a look at the QuickLinks (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000057) for new users section. Its got alot of great tips.
:b3: I wrote a tutorial on female characters here (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=007824) it has some tips on body construction

Hi Maggie and welcome - good to hear you've got your priorities right (school first)!
You should be quite pleased with this if it's only your second attempt at a human head - mine looked more like a potato. OK it's a bit stylised and doll-like, but not only have you got the basic shape quite close, but you've also done a pretty good job of capturing an attractive face and expression. Judging by this, you've clearly got the necessary talent, and its just a matter of practice. No need to rush, in fact the learning process is half the fun of ZBrush, I find.
I can give you no better advice than Hitch has already provided - the QuickLinks section contains loads of good advice, tutorials and scripts on all aspects of modelling and texturing the human form. You've already got the basics. Just use the QLs to concentrate on one aspect at a time and I'm sure you'll soon see a difference.
I look forward to watching your progress. :)
