I've been watching the Discovery channel a good deal lately.

For those who are interested, here is how the model advanced from simple Zspheres:

Man, your work only deserves this: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: because there are no words to say how "fabulastic" it is!!!

Damn Ken... There seems to be nothing you can't do. This is photo perfect. I have to admit I'm green with jealousy. To have that much talent. ~s~ I'd give up a body part or two.

How did you do that hair and those gorgeous eyes?
Amazing work... again.

As always impressive work Ken!!! Good step by step !!! :D :D
How about the materials???? ;) ;)

**** EDITED ****

And the texturing & fibering ?? :D :D :D

The hair is mostly the Fiber Brush. Other hairs were painted with straight color on top of the image.

The material was the basic material, with some minor adjustments. 2.5D strokes added the details and color.

I tried something a little different with the eyes; I made an eye like usual (sphere, radial symmetry coloring) but modeled in a concave area at the iris and pupil. They were put in place. On another layer, I placed unpainted spheres in the same position of the eyes, but gave those spheres transparency and reflection. When rendered, (layer flattening turned off) this gave added highlights and shading. Lastly, I hand painted some extra highlighs.

Thank you all for your comments!

I took one look at the thumbnail and thought Ken B. Superb work once more. If it were any more realistic I'd give it a banana! :tu: :tu: :tu:

And amazing to think that something like this grew from that first little ZSphere model. Thanks for the walkthrough.

Its the texturing that gets me...so precise and no detail spared. I love the eyes and the hairs on the chin. You have chosen a simple bg, but managed to convey an effective illusion of depth of field.
Thank You for sharing.
BTW. I could watch the Discovery channel 24/7 for a week straight and still not be able to whip up anything close to this great work. ;)

Indeed it is impressive. I thought it was a photograph when I saw the thumbnails. That is an intriguing method for the eyes. I must try that.

Hi Ken
Just a little detail :)
The eye on the right of the "photo" :)
have a sort of "cast in eye" color too grey and not at the good place
and the general position of this same eye seems not harmonize to the other
and make trouble in my opinion of course :)

Whoa! I don't know what to say except how can anyone create a model as good as this one?? It is beyond me!! I admit that I feel quite discouraged about my own struggle to get something even 1/1000th as good..

AMAZING!

Frenchy,

I think I see what you are talking about with the eye, if I understand you correctly. Achieving the eyeline, or line of sight, is critical. Thank you for mentioning it.

Northstarr, please don't be discouraged. I constantly see artwork that impresses and "discourages" me because I feel I don't have the skills to match it. Still, you must keep on striving to do your best.

looks great , I dont know why , but even the blurry background looks detailed if you look at the whole picture :p
I'd say keep watching the discovery channel :)

And thanks for the Zsphere steps , I still have problems getting a decent model with low poly modeling. I'm gonna have to watch you're zscripts again :p

I think this is one of the most realistic ZBrush images I have seen to date if not the most.
Astounding!

Inspirational work! words cannot express how much you have impressed me with your images. I feel that although one may not achieve the perfection displayed in your work the inspiration to practice can only result in improved ability, for this I thank you profoundly.

From an anatomical point, I think the visible ear lobe is too far back, and what about a few teeth!

I had viewed photos of a monkey making the "hoot" face for reference, and I couldn't see the teeth since the lips come so far out. But it seems that people still expect to see teeth in there. Perhaps a hint of one or two would help

hey EZ , I watch it too , that guy is simply crazy , he must have some sort of guardian angel otherwise he would have been chopped to pieced by a crocodile already. :)

Iam not saying that you have to put in teeth, I was just asking. the image is great as far as I am concerned. I am a Veterinarian and to me it is just a logical question for me to ask.

Fabulous image, almost photoreal. The only thing that isn't amazingly realistic about it is it seems a bit off. You probably know more than I do about monkeys, with a reference pic and all, but something about the way the mouth is positioned seems strange, almost like its off balanced from the rest of the face. Probably just an illusion caused by the extended lips though. Also as frenchy pilou mentioned the right eye is a bit strange. Maybe it's just me... of course it IS still one of the most realistic images I have ever seen ;) :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:

Incredibly realistic Ken. I can't believe I only noticed this picture now! Wonderful. The shoulders though sort of seem to make it to human looking....
