Use this thread to post questions or startup issues concerning for ZBrush 3.5R2 Windows.

Please include your complete system specifications
Operating System, CPU type and speed, RAM, disk space, graphics card, and anything else that might be applicable beyond those basics.
This information is very helpful to the people trying to answer your question, as well as helping us look for patterns.
Be sure to include this information even if you have already given it in another of your posts.

UNABLE TO OPEN/CREATE A FILE errors on XP: Some unzip utilities do not create empty folders, even if they are listed in the zip manifest. Powerdesk Pro 7 is one such app that is known to have this issue. PowerZip and WinZip are both known to handle these folders correctly. Please delete your ZBrush 3.5R2 folder and then use one of those apps to unzip the downloaded file.

Thanks!

Hi, when running zbrush 3.5r2 for the first time (not yet activated) i get this error message.

zberror.jpg (http://javascript%3cb%3e%3c/b%3E:zb_insimg%28%27158260%27,%27zberror.jpg%27,1,0%29)

I can cancel and continue but i did not get this error with the original 3.5 install.

If i cancel will i not have zproject working?

I would like to install this version without internal errors!

Hi, when running zbrush 3.5r2 for the first time (not yet activated) i get this error message...It is file permmision problem. Are you launching ZBrush as administrator? Try right-click directly on ZBrush.exe icon (not on a shortcut to it) and "Run as administrator".

I get the "Out of disk space" message each time I try to start 3.5r2.
First, I get the "ding" and Zbrush appears in the taskbar, but nothing else. I've found by simply pressing the Alt key the Note "Out of disk space" appears. I click OK and Zbrush runs. I hesitate to say runs ok because there was a forum message in the 3.5 threads that there would be a performance problem in this situation.

The fact that there is not an install program, which usually sorts these things out (like file/folder permissions, etc.) leads me to believe there's a problem finding an install app. that would be compatible with the activation system.

the "Out of disk space" IS a file permission issue. If you run ZBrush anyway, ZBrush will not have proper access to its files and will not be able to use virtual mem files. The permission issue must be resolved for ZBrush to operate properly.

I think we get it that it's a "permissions" thing. What I (and maybe others) don't get is how to fix it.

I only have one account (admisitrator). I've done the DEP thing -- both ways. I've gone to each folder/file and set permissions to admisitrator and sharing to "all".

Maybe telling us what to do, not what it is, would help.

;)ya i agree, i really dislike this UAC permission BS, its annoying, u can disable but that can cuase other issues down the line.

Whats odd is that with the original 3.5 i had no 'permission' issues yet this r2 version now has issues. Surly i would have encountered the same problem with the initial release if its a permission problemo?

Its out of my technical territory but all i will say is i really wanna get back into ZB pronto!

Ive tried everythinng i can think of and always get this error.

Make a new directory named "vmem" under your zbrush directory.
Also make a new directory named "tempfiles" under your ZStartup directory.
See if that helps.

I think I ve tried everything but still the Out of memory error persists , i understand that it is a matter of permissions but i have no clue has what to do to make it work ...
If this has a workaround it should be specified since zbrush doesnt come with a normal install process.

Specs > Xp x64 200g free space 8g ram

It was mentioned in an earlier post that microsoft protocols werent taken into account if thats the case its very sad ... but is it true..

Forget what I said the vmem and tempfiles folder approach WORKS
ITs RUNNING GREAT , someone should make a sticky with this , no problems anymore ..

Thanks! Adding the folder "vmem" did the trick. I had already added the tempfiles folder to get past the first error.

In examining the downloaded zip file, there is a vmem folder along with the rest. I wonder why it doesn't get created when unzipping? All the other folder do.

Support
09-15-09, 08:23 AM
The "vmem" and "ZStartup/Tempfile" folder are needed and should have been created when the downloaded file was un-zipped. If they have not been created, then you will need to create these manually. Create an empty "vmem" folder in the ZBrush folder and one empty "TempFiles" in the "ZBrush/ZStartup" folder.

jaf2

Okay, looking at the contents of the downloaded zip file a little further, there are "Recovered Files", "Zdocs", and "Zmovies" folders, which do not get created either. I wonder if these should be added too?

Okay, I think I found the problem. I did a test "unzip" using the utility I normally use to unzip files -- PowerDesk Pro 7. It seems it doesn't create those empty folders. I tried PowerZip and it does. Both utilities are set to write subfolders.

Now the Zscripts folder shows up as empty in the archive, but it does get created. Not sure why -- maybe someone knows? [edit] I know, it isn't really empty -- has one text file in it.

Can't launch ZBrush 3.5 ?
When launching ZBrush 3.5 for the first time, you may get the following warning..."This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." Alternatively, you might receive a "side-by-side configuration" error. If you get either warning then you'll need to launch the vcredist.exe file that is included within the ZBrush3.5\Troubleshoot Help folder. This is a Microsoft installer which installs windows functions that are missing in your system.
your problem seems to be covered (including instructions).
Alas it's not the case all is good installed! ;)
vcredist.exe etc...

For those that are looking and have the same problem I did:-

Window freezes on first start, shows in taskbar and taskmanager but goes no further.

Add the 2 directories and all is well. :D

hopefully V4 will have a more polished installer.

Cheers all @ pix. .. .. now that my non installing grumpiness has lifted.

I'm seeing a zbrush.info file in the original vmem folder and the original TempFiles folder. Is this normal? Should the vmem folder stay filled with data, after shutting down.

I was able to see the interface once - when I registered the software. Since then, it never comes up.

Yes, these temp files have been added to all empty folders in order to make sure that these folder are created when un-zipped, regardless of which un-zipping program is used.

For the die hard win 2000 users, there is a problem starting Zbrush 3.5 because of a call to an API funcrtion not supported in Windows 2000 kernel32.dll(AddVectoredExceptionHandler).

A workaround is to use an API wrapper like KDW (http://www7.atwiki.jp/win2000/pages/17.html) .

Seems to work on my workstation (Win2K SP4 running under Vmware fusion, Mac Pro) but I haven't had the time to check it intensively.

Of course "do it at under your own responsibility, no garranty etc. etc."

How long is a TEMPorary file temporary?
And, if it should be deleted, who should delete? You do not need to do anything, ZBrush will delete temp files that are no longer needed.

Are the vmem folder files temporary files? If so, then they are staying during the zBrush.exe indefinite hang that happens every time I attempt to run it.

I deleted three files from ZStartup\TempFiles. Again, you do not need to do anything, ZBrush will delete temp files that are no longer needed. If they are not deleted, then they are still needed.

On my first attempt at of the install I received the dual error so I ran the vcredist_x86 file in the trouble shoot folder. The I re-ran Zbrush and I recieved the error below.

"ZBrush Executable has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

So today I started over. I uninstalled my virus protection and I uninstalled the C++ redistributed files using the add remove programs and I even reinstalled from the zip file again ZBrush 3.5R2. Then I went and I downloaded the latest vcredist_x86 file from MS and tried to run Zbrush as the Administrator and I still received the same error. ("ZBrush Executable has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.")

I downloaded a trial ver of PSCS4 and it runs on my computer with no problems.

I downloaded a trial ver of AfterEffects CS4 and it does not run - does not run as it needs cess support or cees (forgot the correct spelling)

So I was wondering if there is a conflict of starting ZB3.5r2 because of no cess or cees support.

I'll recheck the spelling on that.

[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=SSE2&action=edit&section=6)] Notable IA-32 CPUs not supporting SSE2

SSE2 is an extension of the IA-32 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IA-32) architecture. Therefore any architecture that does not support IA-32 does not support SSE2. x86-64 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64) CPUs all implement IA-32 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IA-32). All known x86-64 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64) CPUs also implement SSE2. Since IA-32 predates SSE2, early IA-32 CPUs did not implement it. SSE2 and the other SIMD instruction sets were intended primarily to improve CPU support for realtime graphics, notably gaming. A CPU that is not marketed for this purpose or that has an alternative SIMD instruction set has no need for SSE2.

The following CPUs implemented IA-32 after SSE2 was developed, but did not implement SSE2:

AMD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD) CPUs prior to Athlon 64 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athlon_64), including all Socket A (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_A)-based CPUs
Intel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel) CPUs prior to Pentium 4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_4)

I received a note from support that "tempfiles" was case sensitive and should be "TempFiles". I would usually ignore that on a windows system, but I believe I also saw something about Zbrush treating some disk space as virtual (memory?) so to be safe, I would use the case sensitive name.

Maybe someone from support can elaborate on that becuase it may apply to a few other folder names.

To be safe, it is best to treat all folder names as case sensitive. :)

Ok, so Iīm on AMD Athlon 2500 XP +, no SSE2 so thereīs the problem with running Zbrush. So here comes the question:
I have my support account updated with the 3.5 serial number and so... So should I leave it that way even though I donīt actually use 3.5 but Iīm staying on 3.1? And (and please answer this, because I havenīt heard from Support center for 4 days and in the last message I got they forgot to answer that) is it alright that Iīm running Zbrush 3.1 on the Serial Number that I got with the upgrade e-mail for zbrush 3.5? I was getting the "exceeded number of license ..." message although I successfully deactivated zbrush (3.1) before formating the system, so I tried using the new Serial Number and it worked. So does it mean that the previous Serial Number is useless now or should I be worried about any problems it could cause in the future and I should solve it with Support Center asap?

Thank you for answering and thank you for caring about the SSE2 "problem".

EDIT: Questions answered by support center via support account. Thank you.

You should check to make sure that your CPU supports SSE2. What you've said makes me guess that it doesn't.

Hello, a UAC question:

I am running Vista Home SP1 and did the install "as Admin" - anything else would result in a freeze of the setup routine.

Is it normal that I now have to start the executable right click "as Admin" every time I start ZBrush? (Because if I don't I get the freeze again)

Thank you!

Vista is supposed to remember the setting. That doesn't always hold true, though. To force Vista to remember, right-click on the ZBrush.exe and choose "Properties". Go to the Compatiblity tab, where you'll see a Run as Admin checkbox near the bottom. Check the box, click Apply and you should now be all set.

Thanks Aurick!

Works with double click now, although it still aksks me if it's safe to run ...

Unfortunately I also tried the "compatible with XP Sp2" check and now ZBrush wants to repeat activation?

Thanks in advance!

Still can't get Zbruhs 3.5 to start I have Zbrush 3.1 installed in a separate directory.
Using WinXP Pro system with 100 gigs of disk free:

I run Zbrush 3.5 and it tries to start but never gets past hour glass after long wait.

Multiple tries and it never starts; just the hour glass.

DEP is off.

Tried running vcredist_x86_VS2008_sp1.exe to repair but no effect; same symptom as before; won't start.

Ran Windows update to get latest; still no luck.

Suggestions????????

Thanks,

James

I was wondering if there are any issues with running 3.5 on Windows 7 32-bit final?

I finally managed to get it installed and running using the troubleshooting steps outlined here and everything appeared to work fine. However, when I came to click the make polymesh3d button so I can start sculpting, nothing happens.

The button itself highlights and responds to a click, but when I try to sculpt a message appears telling me I need to click the make polymesh3d button.

I have done a Ctrl+N, tried a new document, and tried re-initializing ZBrush, as well as tried drawing a new version of the tool which appears in the tool palette after I originally clicked with make polymesh3d button.

I can sculpt on the premade tools that appear on startup but nothing else.

Have you run the C++ installer in the Troubleshoot Help folder? Have you tried disabling DEP for ZBrush? (see the text file in the Troubleshoot Help folder) Are you setting ZBrush to run as administrator?

Does your ZBrush 3.5R2 folder have a subfolder called vmem? Does your ZStartup folder have a subfolder called TempFiles? If not, create them.

Have you tried reinstalling ZBrush? And is the folder named ZBrush 3.5R2 or just ZBrush 3.5?

This is sort of a start up issue.....I can't find the download link for Zbrush 3.5r2.
I've got Zbrush 3.5r1 installed and activated. I've even got the cd. I went to the email where I downloaded that version, but it's invalid. I'm confused. Where/who should I contact?

Thanks.

Yes, I ran the installer, disabled DEP for ZBrush and tried running it as regular user and as Administrator. No luck either way.

Who to contact: http://support.pixologic.com (http://support.pixologic.com)

Why you're having this problem: You're looking at the wrong email. The initial upgrade email can only be used once. In fact, the text immediately beneath the link you're trying to click says this. AFTER you upgraded you got a second email from Cleverbridge. That's the one that has the download link. However, that link was good for 14 days and you upgraded longer ago. So Support will need to refresh the download link. They can also resend the delivery email to you.

The Athlon processors do not support SSE2. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE2)

As a result, ZBrush 3.5 will not run on that computer.

Thankyou for the reply Aurick, seems odd to develop ZB in such a way it that it will no longer run on athlons, though i guess they are old now and newer systems have newer tech to keep up with the software, im only upset as i now have to get my wallet out;) cheers for the reply ,some of them new features are well worth splashing out for ,ZBrush just amazes me update after update. good work guys.

I wasn't doing the rightclick thing and runing the program as administrator. I could be wrong but I think this piece of info is missing from the pdf that comes with zbrush.

Make a new directory named "vmem" under your zbrush directory.
Also make a new directory named "tempfiles" under your ZStartup directory. Thank you for the suggestion.
I was getting this virtual memory error on start of Zbrush 3.5r3
Creating that folder named vmem resolved the starting issue.
I wonder why this vmem even happens?
WHen I initially installed and ran Zbrush 3.5r3 there was no problem.
The only possible cause might be my changing this computers name from the right click of the desktop My Computer icon.
