ZBrush 3.5 Release 2 is now available to download
zbrush-35_released_win2.jpg
ZBrush 3.5R2 contains the following new additions, updates and fixes...
NEW ADDITIONS...
:b2: New "Auto Groups With UV" option added which allows for auto-grouping by mesh (shells) and UV (islands) combined continuity.
:b2: Added option to allow object to rotate around its local center. To activate, press the "Align To Object" option in the Draw palette. Note: This button is stored when you save the custom config file.
:b2: Added a 2nd Flatten brush (similar to the Flatten brush found in version ZBrush 3.1).
:b2: A Preferences/LightBox option added to turn on or off LightBox at startup.
UPDATES...
:b3: Increased smoothing strength of the default Smooth brush.
:b3: Masking can now be applied with LazyMouse with or without Backtrack modes.
:b3: Increased the tolerance to mouse/pen movement when assigning Hot Keys.
:b3: The transparent button is now enabled even if the current tool contains only one subtool. This allows ghosted transparency to be activated when entering HD edit mode.
:b3: The sampling value of the ZProject brush is now zero by default.
FIXES...
:b4:It is now possible to generate adaptive displacement and normal maps even when the mesh is partially hidden.
:b4:The "Show Mask" option will auto-activate when applying masking in Transpose mode.
:b4:ZBrush activation code has been updated to be less sensitive to hardware changes.
:b4:ZBrush can now auto-group by UV Tiles even if the Tiles resides in the negative UV space.
:b4:Fixed the 2.5D Blur brush with ZAdd mode.
These following instructions only apply to people who have the original release ZBrush 3.5
Anyone who purchases ZBrush or redeems their upgrade link from this point forward will receive the new version automatically.
If your folder is already named ZBrush 3.5R2 then you have the most current version and do not need to install this update.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS...
If you currently have activated ZBrush 3.5 on your system, you may want to first deactivate it by using the Web Deactivation
button found in the Zplugins palette. When done, continue with the following steps...
:b1: Download ZBrush using the link that was sent to you AFTER you upgraded. This is in the same email that has your ZBrush 3.5 serial number. The initial upgrade link that was sent to you cannot be used again. You can delete that email. The only email that you need to keep is the one that you received after upgrading. This second email has your cleverbridge reference number, serial number, and also the download link that you need to get 3.5R2.
:b1: Extract the Zip file and Move the ZBrush 3.5R2 to your preferred location. (Usually, the Program Files\Pixologic folder)
:b1: Open the ZBrush 3.5R2 folder and run ZBrush. (For Vista and Win 7 users, right-click on the ZBrush icon and select "Run as administrator". )
:b1: When presented with the activation window, click on "Web Activation" in order to activate ZBrush immediately online. (For fastest completion of your activation, copy the key from the web page, return to ZBrush and click the "Enter Code" button. )
Questions and Troubleshooting for ZBrush 3.5 should be posted in the Q&T forum (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=75221)

Does this apply to those that couldn't keep an active activation when they disconnected from the Internet? I realize this is an update, but should we try the normal web activation?

Hi, first thanks for the update. But second I'm afraid the Flatten brushes are now it seems even further from the 3.1 flatten brush!
In 3.5 R1 you could sort of emulate the 3.1 one with enough smoothing and stabilizing, but now changing that value isn't enough, the points still get splayed and the flatten brush itself seems to create more bumps than it removes when working across slightly bumpy geometry.
An easy way to see the difference is just draw out a horizontal stroke on a sphere with the standard brush, go over it a couple of times to make it deeper, then enable the flatten brush and draw over the ridge vertically, with 3.5 it pinches and moves the edge of the top of the stroke bahind the brush because it's just doing a simple "normal" move, if you keep going over the edge back and forth it'll only accentuate the problem, it never smooths down to flat. With the old 3.1 flatten brush the result was that it smoothed down the stroke, there was a tiny amount of movement backwards from the stroke, but mostly it was just flattening as the name suggested, the old brush allowed you to really create nice smooth curves that don't seem so readily possible with 3.5 so far (it was one of my most used brushes).
Got the latest and greatest.. will take it out for a spin.

Great set of updates guys.
Any chance of getting the Move brush alt key behavior returned to the 3.1 variety?
Many thanks for the ability to turn off lightbox. I love the browser but its nice to only open it when you need it.
Also, it seems to me the focal length slider on the camera control is reversed. high values create a fisheye lens while low ones create telephoto.
Cheers!

something i´ve noticed is that in zb3.1 we could set the size sensitivity of the tablet at a value, so that the pressure on the tablet would affect less the size of the brush, but that value doesn´t seem to affect now in 3.5, we have however, the size intensity in a per brush setting...any way to store that at an specific value, or make zbrush respond like in 3.1 regarding this?
thanks a lot
VERY IMPORTANT!!!
DO NOT delete your ZBrush 3.5 folder until you first have removed any custom files such as documents or tools that you created in ZBrush 3.5 and stored in that folder, prior to the R2 release today.

Every single company could learn something from the way Pixologic is running business! A free upgrade. Not 1 week into the upgrade and their already listening to their user base and changing the way their program works for how the people using it want it to. I can think of one company off hand that doesn't care one way or the other what you think about their products once they have your money...auto something. :)
Anyway, thanks again guys for all of the hard work.

Great set of updates guys.
Any chance of getting the Move brush alt key behavior returned to the 3.1 variety?
Well, I personally find the ability to move points along a surface very nice. I dont care if the function is on shift or alt. But the function of the Shift key for moving points out from their normals should be more like the old alt move function where you didnt have to initiate a new action each time when you want to move points, you could just hold down the key.
That is really the only difference between the old shift-move brush and alt- move brush. They simply kept the inferior version of the same behavior.

All I would need is to have the move brush remember to pull along normal once you have shift held down. In the old version you could move about pulling along normal witout having to keep pressing alt again. Now you have to repeat the keystroke each time. Just a move brush that remembers once you hold down shift to keep pulling the normal each time you touch the surface until you release the shift key.

SI'm with you on that. The Alt-Move functionality of the old move brush is superior to shift move functionality of the new, because you can just hold the key down for multiple transformations, and just hold it down to start the Normal move mode, rather than the slightly more fidgety " Pen down> Shift>Move, repeat" than at current..
Now, since you cant Hold down Shift to initiate a move, as that is tied to Smoothing, you're right, it would be better if the Alt key was restored to the old behavior.
As long as the *new* Alt function, namely the ability to slide points along a surface was moved to the more finicky "Press, Shift, Move" slot. Sliding points along a surface is useful, and I wouldnt want to lose it, but it *would* be nice if once you had activate that mode , you could just keep holding down the button to slide points, and not have to initiate a new action each time.

thanks a lotI will second this post.
It seems that the tablet Size Sensitivity feature doesn't seem to function based on the value in the slider. I prefer working with Size Sensitivity set to 0 (and this works like a charm in 3.1), but no matter what value is in the slider, it still behaves the same as the default setting of 0.75.
Is there a fix or workaround for this?
I haven't been able to activate 3.5 or 3.5R2. I just keep getting the activation failed message. Anyone else having trouble? Any suggestions? I uninstalled 3.1 and now 3.5R2 will not start. I click it and all I get is a ding and it never opens. Anyone have any ideas? These are the exact problems I've been experiencing. First, like Harmonic, no matter which of my email addresses I tried during web activation, I'd get this message:The email address provided does not match with the serial key provided at the time of purchase.
Please try again.
I decided to try again again today. But first, I thought I'd come to ZBC to see if anyone had the same problem. Instead, I saw that a 3.5 R2 was available. So as the instructions on the first page of this thread stated, I tried the link in the only email that I've received titled "ZBrush 3.5 for the PC (Upgrade Info)." As others in the thread have already said, it pointed to a page that states "PAGE INVALID" with some text explaining that the link is no longer valid.
Luckily, I was able to find my original download page in Firefox's Downloads window by right-clicking the file and selecting "Go to Download Page." It took me to the page I originally downloaded from with the cleverbridge reference number, download link, and serial number. I downloaded the .zip file again and it contained R2. I looked at the .pdf instructions inside of the zip file for extracting the folder into the proper location. I deleted the original Zbrush 3.5 folder and extracted R2.
Now, as dfaris has said, when I double-click the Zbrush executable, I only get an hour glass and nothing ever happens. Right-clicking Zbrush on on the taskbar does nothing and I have to close the process through the task manager.
Any fixes for these problems that anyone is aware of?
Also, I've been lurking on the forums instead of posting regularly for about 2 years or so now. I'm glad to be back. I've missed you guys.

I was sculpting along on a mesh I had created in another piece of software and upon finishing, I went to export the model as an obj...wow, it showed that the scale was greater than 1, offsets on X, Y, and Z were not zero. In the original piece of software the center of the object was at 0,0,0. so I changed the settings in ZBrush 3.5 R2 "Export" to what I thought they ought to be...WRONG! This changed the model's world location, and scale when the modified model was imported back into the original software. While this is a nice feature, it has created a problem that I can not seem to reverse w/o having written down the original settings before altering them. (No restore default?)
How do I get the original (default?) scaling and world offset settings back in the "Export" function so that it functions like 3.1?
Thanks!

Thanks!Hello
Try this.
Export the top level of your mesh as an obj
Import the original obj from the other app
Import the high rez obj on top of the obj from step 1
Do not remap
Then Rebuild Subdiv Levels and export
That should change the offset back.

A BIG THANKS for the fixes, the topological mask not visible was reaaaaally boring:rolleyes: .... of course some things look still strange (like the Alt+move thing), but in the end i think it's only a matter of getting used to a different approach (like the brush mod not working anymore for most brushes, almost replaced by the imbed value...)
Yes, ZBrush activation code has been updated to be less sensitive to hardware changes.

Is anyone having problems with the standard brush stroke? or at least notice the difference between 3.1 and 3.5 in freehand mode? For me there seems to be no difference between Dotted and Freehand mode, and all the my strokes are very dotted unless I go really slow. I'm curious to know if it's just the machines at my work or if it's a bug. This is our main brush at work, so we're kind of sad that we have to stay with 3.1. I played with the stroke average, tablet settings, modifiers, etc, but nothing works.
how can I assign flatten or another brush to the shift key? In Zbrush 3.1 I just hold shift and click on the flatten brush which assigns the flattenbrush to the shift key. :(

(jealous and somewhat) Patient Mac user waiting to get his hands on 3.5 and ZSpheres II...
Has anyone looked into writing a script/plugin that would allow you to export the ZSphere armature as a bone setup, and also export the correlating overlying mesh with weighted influence based on those bones? This would be an enormous times saver and help link the sculpting and rigging process in a way that should be pretty intuitive.

So when do we get our plugins working again? 3.5 is cool and all but I've become reliant on the plugins for workflow such as Decimation Master and thus can't do much in 3.5 outside of personal work. I would have figured with the extra month it took to release 3.5 just "right" with a patch shortly after that the plugins would work right away.

Even more than that, you might have figured that they would have been bundled. Plugins like Decimation Master, Subtool Master, Transpose Master, & Image Plane have become "must have" features that one would figure would make their way into the core app - or at least the core download package..

I just realized that even older MASSIVELY USED plugins like ZMapper are nowhere to be found. Shouldn't this just be a part of ZB now? Can't Pixologic build ZB to be modular enough so that old plugins will work with newer versions of the software (a-la maya)? Does it seem that ZB gets totally re-written every time a new version comes out? Anyways, just rambling...

There's always a work around for these issues but the point is these issues shouldn't be here. Especially after so much time and so many iterations. Yes, you can work in 3.1 instead but then 3.5 is totally invalid since you can't work on a file in 3.5 and open it in 3.1. That's right. No backwards compatibility. Not that I expected there to be but I would have thought the mesh data wouldn't change and could easily transfer over. There's really no excuse these plugins aren't just part of ZBrush by now like someone else mentioned earlier.

I will expand on this title...I have 3.5 up and running and so far, no problems. However, I have heard of several "issues" popping up once R2 has been installed.
Personally, I am somewhat hesitant about releasing my "grip" on 3.1 in any case as several problems seem to be rearing their ugly head concerning both 3.5 releases.
Ahh...choices, choices...what to do? Stick with 3.1 (a "known" and reliable quantity), move on to 3.5 R1 or take another chance and end up with 3.5 R2!
Im almost wondering if a "3.5 R3" should be in the works based on what Ive seen so far.
Regardless, I commend Pixologic for their tireless efforts. After all, this is complex software we are dealing with and I do realize that there are most certainly going to be snags along the way. Oh well...

Did you read the text immediately under the link you're trying to click? It specifically says what's going on.
The link can only be used once. The purpose of the link was to create your ZBrush 3.5 account. Now that you have an account, the link is meaningless.
After you upgraded, you got a second email from cleverbridge. This one has your reference number in the subject line. It has your serial number. And it has a download link that CAN still be used.

After doing this, I was taken to the appropriate download page.
Again, Im not sure if this is what you are experiencing, but you might check it out if nothing else seems to work.
Thanks guys for the advice. It's just not happening.

I've even tried to forward it on to another e-mail account to see if I could use the links in that with no luck.

No troubles, take your time, upgrade when ready.
One thing that I'm noticing is that when in polypaint mode I can no longer hold SHIFT to smooth/blend colors. Instead, the sculpting smooth brush gets activated and the shape of the mesh gets affected. This happens even when only MRGB is on and ZSUB/ZADD are off.
Is it a new bug or am I forgetting a setting somewhere?

It works for me. Are you setting your smooth brush to RGB or MRGB instead of your sculpting brush? Holding down the SHFT key changes your brush to the current smoothing brush, letting you adjust it's behavior. It could also be that you are smoothing on a very high subdivision level, try going down in levels and see if the smoothing brush is more responsive.
Hi Joel, thanks for the reply. I just had to turn off ZAdd after holding shift, not before :)

Err, this may have been answered, looked through these threads and missed it but is there any indication on when the plugs will be updated? (decimation mater, paintstop and what not?) (here I go opening my mouth and confirming I am indeed a fool)Actually, Im not sure if this question has been formerly answered. However, Im betting that, based on past releases, it could be a while.
I myself have many of these useful plugs installed for 3.1 and have no real problem with simply using 3.1 when some of these applets are needed. After all, despite any "improvements" made in 3.5, v3.1 is still a strong, valid app.
In terms of Decimation Master, Im guessing it can still be used on a 3.5 based model by exporting/importing an .obj file. So, for this plug-in at least, there seems to be a valid workaround.
Just hold out a bit....the updates will arrive. Personally, Im more interested in an integrated help/tutorial system at this time. :)
Thanks and yeah I have my 3.1 with DM and all installed also, curious though when they will make it to 3.5 and perhaps some clarification whether this or that is integrated and if not when it will be. I really love the releases but its odd to not have something from the last release that we were all stoked about, yah know? I dont want to have 3 versions of ZB installed all supporting differing plugs and so forth.

Yeah... (as referenced before) it would certainly be nice if Pixologic could start releasing current versions of ZBrush with previous (and updated) plug-ins integrated vs. having to wait for upgraded versions which are only available via download. But, then again, if such features were included within the final release, we could be forced to wait that much longer for a "useable" program. Who knows? Either way...it is what it is.

Cheers,Plug-ins will be updated soon from Pixologic.
Not sure if I'm having an uncommon problem or not.
I got the download link from a support ticket, since my original expired.
I extracted it, and went to activate it. Of ocurse, zb3.5 is still activated, so it complained.
I deactivated zb3.5, but get an error when I try to activate zb3.5r2...
"You have reached the maximum number of activations for this serial number.
This machine was never registered and the number of active licenses has reached the maximum alloted for your purchase agreement."
so I'm guessing I have to wait for pixologic to manually deactivate 3.5, before I can activate 3.5r2? Is that correct?

ZBC cannot asssist with account-related issues. Please reply to your last support ticket or create a new one. Our team will get you taken care of.
I was just generally asking the crowd here is I was doing things properly.. the ticket was addressed, and I'm activated now with zb3.5rc2. I was following the proper proceedure I guess.

Just wondering if there's any news on ZApplink for 3.5 r2?
Am scuppered without a proper link to Photoshop...
Don't know why the export option only exports the lowest/default doc size even though the doc i've created is doubled or 2x doubled???
:(

so lightbox is mostly a update of this maybe:

Overall, I'm impressed. nice tools and general cleanups. The Z add and Z sub functions seem to be reversed for some reason. That's my only real complaint so far. Love to see what else they have in store for me to find.

I wonder if the internal renderer has gotten more stable - especially with bigger document sizes and more than 1 source of light ! In Zbrush 3.2 Mac its unusable - it crashes almost everytime, and the best of all - you cant save render settings :(
.... and I wonder wehn the mac version releases - cant wait anymore !!!!
Drat... I just hopped on for my weekly "Is it out yet!" check, figuring that we were ceeping up on "The end of September" and saw that the Mac release date had magically slipped away.
I was really hoping to put 3.5 to work on a new project that's perfect for the new hard surface tools... I wonder how long I can hold my breath into the project's 3 week deadline before I have to give up and use Modo for the whole thing.
*quivering lip*
hey guys
any word on when the plugins like Zapplink and stuff will work for 3.5? there's a lot of us at work still using 3.1 because of this

Plug-in release date? I just need to know if I'm going to be able to use 3.5 on a job. Planning on 3.1 for now, but would be great to know. The clayFinish brush is really great! :-)

My original cleverbridge 3.5 Download link has expired and I am unable to download 3.5r2. What should I do to update ZBrush 3.5.
It would have helped if I had recieved an email notifying me of the r2upgrade.

Thank you
This is getting as long winded as the ZBrush activation process!
I would be grateful for a reply to help with the original request instead of being directed to another thread.
This thread is the one explaining how to download the update and should be the one to answer queries when it is not possible to download :)ZBC cannot help with account-related issues. That has to go through Support. Fortunately I was able to locate your account and renew your link for another 14 days. But if you had created a support ticket, we could have helped you much sooner.

robert k.This would be fine, but my download link has expired. I've contacted Cleverbridge to reactivate the link, but I will have to wait until tomorrow now for a reply from them, as I didn't even know about this update until 8pm and their offices shut at 6pm :(

Hello, zbrushers and pixologic.
I have a little suggestion about what could be changed in ZB 3.5
Right now we have way more tools, which is good... But at the moment we have such a big mass of them, that I (for example) get lost in... Since I'm not used to the new brush list, it takes my a while to fin a brush i need.
I suggest to group brushes... For example, group the smooth brushes, and make you select the right smooth brush when you click on "Smooth brush".
I think that would make it look way cleaner.

Well, yeah...
But wouldn't it be better if every new user wouldn't have to manually clean everything up himself?

But oh well, until then...

Anyone know how to extract a cavity map since Zmapper dissapeared?
I cannot find it anywhere.
Seems like a common feature, I thought it would be easier to find. I saw some one else post the same question in this thread but didn't see any reply.
Anyone know?

Anyone know?Right now you can create a cavity map in the Masking Sub-Palette and then go to the Texture Map menu and click the New from Masking.

Thank you Gabo1991 (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/member.php?u=46557). I prefer the control zmapper gave (even though similar results can be achieved).
I am still not able to find Check UV's to see if any of my UV's overlap. Any idea where that one got hidden? Thanks again Gabo1991 (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/member.php?u=46557)
