View Full Version : *** More about ZBrush 3.5
I'm really happy to wait for an update which has as little bugs in it as possible, than getting a version with heaps of them, it'll really hard to remove all bugs, zBrush is so cutting edge and in a league of its own, so I totally understand what it's like programming a piece of software, one minute you think it's done so give it the testers then BAM another bug creeps in, it can be very frustrating for the programmers too. Don't get me wrong i'm itching for this update as well, but there's still sooo much to perfect with the current version too, so all you negative people out there should work on that and when the update comes out your skills will be far better then if you were just on this thread b**ching.
Pixologic, you guys rock!

Where is Zbrush developement team located?
If you go back to the first post in this thread and look at the date
it shows ... 1 week ago ... oh my god! That means ... it's today. They
are releasing it today, I'm sure the message says it will be released in the coming week.
Ok, I need to go check my inbox. Back in a few minutes ...

Cant see nothig new there?
I am not going to upgrade unless there is a grid.. I already got a tutorial video from gnomon on 3.2 advanced modeling and advanced sculpting because I didnt have any clue on how to use this software and I had to make a decision on whether or not I should buy it for my customers here.
CrazyMatt

There is a Grid, and it has been implemented since Mac OSX update 3.2.
The button lays on the right hand side mini button columns. Most of the minor features that will be featured in 3.5 can be read in the Mac OSX 3.2 documentation PDF with images.

"The release has been delayed to take place sometime during the first week of September" Did the week ended ?
Since they always use their deadlines to the very last possible second, I'd guess they're considering next week as the first week of september, and this (past) week as the last of august.
Deliver it already! :(

We could all visualize what we want to make with ZBrush3.5:
I'm planning on finally make my Antihero and some other things:
CyberSpawn2100 Hero (I know it not Original but hes totally Syber-awesome)
IRON MAN v2 (something very similar #1 cover art my favorite version of him)
A photo-realistic version of Sonic the Hedgehog (I'm not sonic fan but for some unknown reason I must make this to get it out of my head)
surrealistic arts (not enough of this)
A HULK like character I call The Fierce :)
Sexy Women
Transformer (most likely a Motorbike)
tentacle monster
An alien space ship (inspired from my favorite book Space Wreak - 1980s)
I also want to work on good method/technique for making Smoke and Water effects using a combination of all of 3.5 new tools
I remember when ZBrush for MAC came out and it wasn't compatible with 3.1 models ....I wonder if this be the same for 3.5?

hmmm....still hoping for something to play with on monday...it is labor day here in america and hoping to do some zbrush labor.
I do think that for Z4 that pixologic should just do the Id thing...it's done when it's done. No release date. Don't tell us a few weeks before hand...just one day we all wake up and it has been released. That would rock.
This waiting drives me a bit crazy:) I AM NOT complaining. I just get a bit OCD about checking my mail and this forum.

I hope the team think for 3.5 o 4, have symmetry mode when you convert projet in zbr files. I remember photoshop 11 don´t have a simple symmetric mode for 2d... after 15 years... i hope pixologic team think about that... and i thinks, we MUST have an option keep all subtool like masks when we working in zbr document, Why¿? because when we use direccional brush with alfa, i NEED choose the part i want painting, if i want painting neck, legs, hand, i select my mask subtool, and aplly the brush, what i want.... I´m sure all Artist like this options. I THINK IS VERY IMPORTANT. I LOVE YOU SOFT. I LOVE HIM. ADOBE DREAM WITH YOUR SOFT, I m SURE... in 5/7 years... zbrush 10 MUST BE super great !!!!!!!!!!!!!! (if understand my bad english) Ask to Bulgarov Vitaly LIKE I SAY I M SURE HE WANT SO THIS OPTIONS and great thread: LINK (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=074301)

well, looks like everybody is loosing the hopeness :( me too, but, one day 3.5 will release! While I do share everyone's enthusiasm I think we should all take a moment and really put things into perspective. We all know what's it's like to be in the eleventh hour, cranking away, trying to make deadlines. I'm sure Pixologic shares this urgency to a reasonable degree. Unfortunately, Pix' doesn't have the option of rushing and making something that's just good enough but completed on time. It absolutely has to work as planned. I for one, do not want to be sitting around fighting bugs 'til the next update and I definitely don't want to be bombarded by the flood of Pixologic hate mail that will surely follow on ZBC for the next three months if they don't get this one right. It's a holiday weekend here in the states. Surely we can find something else to do 'til the release which is indeed likely a few days away.
May be this lil delay cause of Pixo wants us to give ZB3.5+GoZ wright now.... hmm?... may be...

Better Good than fast. Learn Patience
Someone might say Yeah Yeah ok I'll learn patience, how long will it take to learn patience? I running out of time here!
But for me I'd rather have it working well and install it once as 3.5 whenever it's ready.
I would not want to download it every week with patches and fixes.
As 3.5.1 ( fixed 5 important things that were rushed in 3.5)
As 3.5.2 ( fixed 4 important things that were rushed in 3.5)
and so on
I've been a CG hobbyist for almost 20 years now. This delay is nothing to be concerned about. You will have it soon enough. It is not a cruel joke on you.

Thats cool that they at least said something so we know not to expect it until at least Tuesday but....
That means they would have to get everyone's ZB 3.5 out by Tuesday or face mass emails the 9th (Wednsday). So it is very very likely come Tuesday they will make yet another announcement that it is delayed again :(

i have to totally disagree with you, i'd rather see point updates every once in awhile instead of having to wait a year or two for some bug fixes, i highly doubt that 3.5 will be bug free, even if we had to wait until december. there is no reason to not want the occasional bug fix, it worked for the mac users.

Even developers need some time off.
Even though some of them might be laughing at our rants and raves about there product, they know its due to love and respect, so they will do their best to put out something they think can satisfy their customers.
While I myself am like a rabid fan waiting for the rockstar to come out, I am willing to wait so that it's up to Pixologic standards. (but I check my mail and support daily :D)

Next time, pixologic should only pose closed threads for introducing new stuff, to avoid getting threads like this. I'm really afraid to see, how people can turn out when they not get what they want, even it is for free.
Alot of people should just chill and respect all the effort that's going into this great tool.

Things are not that serious.
Maybe the thread turned out because of people excitement for all the new stuff the update has, then people let off steam, and are making light of it, almost making fun of themselves.
I thinks everyone appreciates Pixologic for such a wonderful free update.
People are bugging out. I deal with execs often, they have fun sometimes also.
I don't anybody is going kill anyone if the update is delayed, or get so mad that they never use zbrush again. People are just bugging out.
Happy Holidays to everyone.
Actually it helps to update our "ignore lists" :D
People who say things like "I've stopped all work until xxx comes out" obviously aren't really in business in much of meaningful way. I've haven't be able to stop work on anything in 25 years, certainly not because a software vendor delays their release.
Others that want to "lawyer" the release date down to the hour.
I think I saw another post with the concept of a "hunger strike" . . . precisely whom will that inconvenience?
Unlike many other firms, Pixologic has actually kept us informed of their changing development progress and targets. They actually released patches to one of their versions (the Mac 3.2 one) to fix some of the more critical bugs instead of forcing those to suffer through the development cycle. Their current versions work as well as Zbrush has ever had.
In terms of "in the dark" they have made a couple things clear already. They said they will delay the release a "few days"--annoyingly vague, but a few days is anything more than three in vernacular usage. It could be as much as a couple of weeks IMHO.
But, they have also said we "first week of September", "upcoming week", and most importantly invited support tickets if you don't get an upgrade notice by September 9th (this coming Wednesday.) That would indicate to me that release will start the week of September 7th and the mailing should be done by September 9th.
How do I draw this incredible conclusion? The "first week" of a month (despite other posts on this forum) in business terms is often the first week of a month containing a MONDAY in that month. (Much like Church calendars contain Sunday as the first week.)
The upcoming week, though vague when you say it on Tuesday, if often the NEXT week (otherwise, in coming English/American vernacular, you would use the phrase "this week".)
Of course the real clue for the clueless was "September 9th" which is the NINTH day of the month of September, which this year falls on next Wednesday.
Their is no mystery here. Even with all of these "clues", I'd still put it at 50-50 that it comes out in the coming week. Pixologic is notorious virtually since its inception for altering its release dates until they are satisfied with the resulting product. Compared to past releases, this one has actually followed a fairly normal course of announce and delay a little bit that occurs in the software business. (Autodesk missed Mudbox Mac by many days as well and has missed many release targets in the past, Maxon doesn't even pre-announce upcoming releases, Newtek has been all over the map, Adobe, Apple, Microsoft, etc., etc.)

I love ZBrush and can't wait for my copy of 3.5!
The only problem I have with 3.5 is this... every time I watch the videos for it my mouth won't close. It's weird and sometimes I even drool!
Seriously, take your time Pixologic and get all those bugs out. Don't like bugs.

When version V3 was late, I ranted and I honestly felt like all the people saying it was a "free" upgrade were wrong. I felt like, I paid for V2.5 and was told that payment included the upgrade to V3. I was pretty annoyed...
...BUT, when I finally got V3, and saw all the improvements, subtools, transpose, poly painting, matcaps, new brushes, etc. I became convinced the upgrade was totally worth the wait.
While I still don't understand the logic behind announcing a release date before you're ready to release, I did not expect to be getting free upgrades to 3.5 or 4 so I don't feel entitled to anything.
I have little doubt this version is going to knock my socks off, just like the last one did, and that makes all this delay a very small price to pay for me personally.
Until the release, if you're you're feeling irritated, turn that energy in to something positve by channeling in to starting a new sculpt in the current version. Might make ya feel better, and hopefully, you'll be able to finish it in V3.5 when it ships.

This is such a great forum; i love you guys.... start a new sculpt is great advice!
BIG HUGZ TO ALL, chin up, grit teeth, you know it'll be worth the wait in the end ;)
Oooops, there you go, i did a little wee...
Next time, pixologic should only pose closed threads for introducing new stuff, to avoid getting threads like this. I'm really afraid to see, how people can turn out when they not get what they want, even it is for free. :rolleyes:Wow a couple of people posting that they are a little annoyed but not a big deal. You act like they are about to commit suicide.
When ever Pixologic wants to release a "free" upgrade, I'm fine with it. :) :tu:

It's the nature of downloadable software. There's no point in setting a future release date if you already have your product ready to release.
this is a great thread for getting ones post count up ..

I have been with Zbrush and Pixologic for 7+ years now. This is nothing new for them or for the software industry. Software release is an intricate choreography of data handling, personnel, and patience on so many levels.
As for the honesty of Pixologic, let me tell you a story. Back in August of 2002, I stumbled onto ZBrush 1.23b demo and, with two weeks left in a long ZB contest (Third Party with Pixologic), I tied for first place and won a copy of the next new ZBrush (1.55) due out Soon. 4 month later..lol. They released THE DEMO and a month later on January 29th, 2003, 1.55 was released. It took me half a year after winning that contest to finally get my copy. I was like most of you until then, but still had to complain little because it was free...a prize. For the past 7 years, I STILL feel the same, Z is my prize and, true to their word, even for someone who hasn't given them money for my ZBrush, it HAS STILL BEEN FREE! That alone compelled me to spend years here giving back to this community for as long as I can, though I am ashamed to say that this hasn't been the case as of late...for a few years now.
But it has to be said, they are a laudable company. Honest and good hearted to their core. So, hold on folks, it will be here and it will be good.
Here is what it is:
IT WILL be awesome,
it will be free,
It will be out when its ready,
when download files and keys are set,
when servers can handle the virtual maelstrom of the public downloading,
when support section is ready and focused for their tumult to come,
and so much more that no one but pixologic and people in the industry with SOME semblance of understanding in this can truly fathom the ramifications involved.
Given all of the above, I can wait, be it a week or a month, or even a year.
It had been and always shall be My Prize.

I love what Pixologic is doing and I think that their development is next to divine, but their public relations is completely f'ed up.
They keep promising things by certain dates and they don't deliver. That is bad business. They can develop all day long and that is great, but they are messing with other peoples livelihood so that they don't lose ground to competition. This software is expensive.
Blender has similar sculpting abilities that are free and being developed free, so the companies that are working for profit have to work even harder.
I have had zbrush for a long time and it is still completely unstable for me. It crashes all of the time. They should create a stable program first, and then work on improvements.

There is a HUGE desire for what Pix is doing. People will pay (eagerly and gladly) for what they have created. I can't wait for it.
I have to also agree with zbrush being very unstable even with 3.1 . But ahhhh dont you see why the updates are free now :)
Little to no instability here. Some are just unlucky I guess.
Jack999,
I agree with you that falling behind on release dates is bad PR. And that bad PR is itself a poor business practice. Things have gotten better by leaps and bounds, but it's been a sore spot with many people for years.
Within that, though, you seem to be making contradictory points. I don't know whether you're saying:
a) Pixologic should hold off on a feature release and focus on stability,
or
b) Pixologic is harming the industry with each delay.
I have no problem with a), though I think you'll find it an unpopular view here. Most users are happy enough with their stability, and genuinely don't care about yours if it's going to cost them features.
As for b), I don't buy it. Nobody's making business decisions based on the proposed release date of a software update. If they're in a production, they're not installing that update. Doesn't matter what software we're talking about - the devil you know is always safer than the devil you don't. You can't gamble on an unknown when there are deadlines pressing.
Likewise, while I've been very impressed with Blender's progress of late, I don't think anyone's losing their customers to it, no matter how much some companies might deserve to lose customers.
People are always reluctant to try free software to replace something they've paid for. This sounds counterintuitive, but walking away from something isn't free - it costs every cent you've invested in licensing, training and R&D, while incurring new costs in the latter two columns. Heck, even if you ignore all that, the free software can't be cheaper than a free upgrade. At best, it can only be equivalent.
But really, cost is irrelevant. If you're in a professional environment, you're going to use the tools that your team is already trained in, unless a new tool is able to give you more power without disrupting the existing workflow. That's just the reality you're stuck with.
There are exceptions, of course. But they're few and far between.
Anyway, yes. We'll get it when we get it. And some users will have problems, but they'll love it regardless. And the world will keep spinning.

and which windows are you using?
zbrush is mostly unstable when you are out of memory. up until then it works just fine. theres the issue that freezes the application but that one shows up once a month at most for me, and is easily gotten around if you just hit the save hotkey.

Hi.......
I am Francis.Regarding ZBrush 3.5 its amazing software to use for painting. With advanced geometric and image processing capabilities and advanced fom XBrush. For advanced capabilities It must include matlab features.
I have really nice experience with it and its satisfies all the requirements of painting.
Anyways its nice to use it.
Give me a quality product from a respectable company at a reasonable price, and I will happily pay when/if I can. Give me that with free upgrades for seven years, and I will gladly defend you in your own forum.*
zBrush 3.5 is going to be the shizzle, I can just feel it.
Sad thing is I used to spend all night working in a 3-view modeler one triangle at a time**, and in seven years I still have not put nearly as much time into zBrush. I sure wish I had that time now... Curse Pixologic and their stupid innovating ways! Why couldn't 3.5 have come out 15 years ago instead of a week from now?**
*Has it really been that long? Wooah.
**In those days we actually would name individual triangles. If you were working on a large model you'd just open the phone book to a random page and name them as you created them, three clockwise points at a time. (The order of point selection determined if the poly normal faced toward or away)
(Phone books were these books that the phone company...)

I'd say that most crashes in ZBrush are likely graphics hardware or graphics driver related like most apps. After that, probably low memory condition or memory leaks.
Actually never had any crashes in z just had to learn an entirely new system. just wish they would make hotkeys for previous brushes!

The point here is that I'm a graphic artist, not a linguist. It shouldn't be necessary to go over a release announcement and try and deduce what could possibly be meant by it.
This could be so easily resolved if the announcement said for example :
to be released within one week starting from the day this mail was posted or somewhere between 1/7 of september. It's not rocket science ...

Cause as soon as these things start sending they gonna get swarmed with media and support calls. So let's just hope they are going to hit the send button in the morning:)
I've stopped guessing and since my lobotomy I can now sit back and relax ...

This generation is very spoiled, we are dealing with a bunch of little kids, waiting for Christmas Eve to open their gifts. Let's not forget that this is a gift for all of us. The one I saw that made me whoop and hauler was the last few which talked about the skinning. Adaptive Skinning just about made me cry. hey must have a zif averaging algorithm. I know they would do it. I mean, after decimation master, I just know they would rock out the good skins finally.

You know, they havent been talking about posing much in regards to 3.5. And I mean posing actual skinned and sculpted models here, not zshperes. Maybe that's one big surprise we might see?

ziegfrid, to quote one of my fav songs "get your head out of the mud baby, put flowers in the mud baby"
a week ago i was disappointed, but now i'm okay and much more positive no matter the release date.
it also looks like many of the zsphere brushes are just differently modified, which is something i much prefer, i'd rather change settings in the brush palette instead of jumping through a dozen brushes, really hope this is the case. i would've liked to have seen a sizing brush, something that could change the zsketch zspheres(thats going to get tiresome to say) to a certain diameter.
Just checked my support account and... Here's a good sign:

I don't know much about booleans and I don't know much how they are made but I did look at the zspheres2 vids at the zclassroom and look at the armature brush and and about 2/3s the into the unified skins - maybe a new approach that would make booleans obsolete?

Yeah man, life has made a turn, no doubt. Took some time to pick up the pieces and find some new ones to fit but I did it. Can't wait to start playing with Z again. Earlier in the post, I told my favorite Z story about winning the contest. Though about you and Lonnie, Joe, Ken, Ron, and the Zchat gang. Ah the good ole days...lol.
I'm excited about this new Z man, I might even convince the Director of my school district to get a site license so I can teach it in my Advanced A/V Pro Class. Would be a wonderful dream come true!

I was referring to the new ZSpheres in 3.5 as Zspheres 2. I got to know about volumetric sculpting some time back and I kept wondering why ZBrush didn't have it, coz pixologic has been the true pioneer in 3d sculpting. After trying the demo for 3DCoat i was impressed, but... umm... it wasn't Zbrush. So i wrote here at ZBC how i wanted volumetric sculpting integrated in ZBrush. Little did i know Pixologic would give the rather nascent volumetric sculpting technology a turbo charged boost and push it to such a sophisticated level in 3.5. so the volumetric sculpting i had seen looked so passe as compared to ZSpheres in 3.5.
That's all, hope i made sense. :)

Doesn't make sense but its cool though.
See, here is the thing Son:
The 3D, HD sculpting, software industry, uses each other to evolve. It is a symbiotic industry. Who is first, who is last is not relevant.
Who evolves above all ramification is a more laudable cause.
Yeah, Z has its flaws. But on a grander scheme, Z has always owned.
Above all, it is what is is.
There is no reason for quibbled semantics...in my opinion that is..
Why?, because time, technology, and patience changes all, and the balance of sculpting power is always bound to shift,
Such is the nature of the industry.
Acceptance is a given, no matter one's loyalty.
I mean this in the best sense and not to offend if it does.
Like I said, it just is what it is.
Ownership has no more weight,,in thought or in presence,...
Because time and patience always alters reality.
Deep?..I know...
It is what I do.
Hope that clears MY standpoint.
That reminds me! "ZBrush 3.5 will also include one of the still unannounced key features of ZBrush 4."
Could that be ZSpheres2 or something else not revealed yet? Something to speculate about all night or the next few days IF Zbrush aint out yet tommorow.

It seems bed time is now upon me. I disapprove of my required sleep but, as I always say, C'est La Vie. It is what it is. I have always given my heart and my faith, as a 3D artist born from tradition sculpting, to Pixologic. I will admit, as so many others have, in hopes, and even in complaints, that the Laudable ZBrush has fallen short of other software at times. But, the truth of the matter is this: We have time, we have technology, and Pixologic! Above all else, they have always kept the flame of hope and the talent to dream with that hope, past knowledge and experience.
I have written, about religion and spiritualuty, and now find it appropriate about this, Zbrush and one's loyalties:
<!--- blog subject ---> <label id="pBlogSubject_413698058">Find your answers...</label>
When looking up to what ever it is that has you and your faith, it is better to ask that they give you help in understanding what it is within yourself to find harmony and not to just ask for answers and/or results. They can't give it, but they can help you to turn the light on within so that you may help yourself. Once I stopped asking for answers and started asking to help me see the answers within myself, I got more results.
They are not the vehicle that gets you there but the fuel that helps make it so. The Drive is up to you.
See, I shall always be a follower and believer of Z. Even when, in a given time, I might find it lacking. But, I view this as not a shortcoming, but as a challenge (on their level as well as mine) to grow with what is given and what will become.
Evolution is the key, and even if Pixologic eats the big digital death some software companies face, I will forever be their advocate. However, I do not foresee them taking their final bow for ever in my time. They have a few things under their belt and in their hearts that other companies will NEVER have:
Talent
Patience
Ambition
Foresight
and above all...
Hope...
For a growing industry...
and for the crave of the artist.
Live long the non-linear process!
Forever Z Kiddies.
Forever Z!!

He said you can still set the resolution for your base mesh when you skin it.
first of all i would like to congratulate Pixo dev team for what looks like an awesome step forward in the modeling process...excellent work !
This said it is important to always go back to the basics of what modeling and sculpting is, what modeling needs are and keep improving keeping this things in mind.
Zbrush might have been designed with mostly or only creature creation in mind but here im gonna put a short list of what are the limitations i can see and that unfortunatley Zspheres 2 are not yet goin to fix.
asset creation; again as a creature modleing package Zbrush is simply fantastic ...but creating creatures is far from being the more time consuming shapes out there ...there are many many possible shapes ready to be created and Zbrush methods of shape creation (which is what a modleing soft ultimately is) has some great and unique ideas but unfortunatley not covering the following problems:
it takes a long list of twisted complex, accurate and unexpected shape creation to understand that we havent yet found an unified approach to everything...yet a modleing package taht wants to be truely capable of doing "any shape" will have to explore this ideas at some point...
sculpting is not only about adding but also about substracting...we currently dont have any support for booleans or some sort of negative space creation...if you look aorund you many man made and many natural shapes are based on negative spaces too...most of creature based shapes are convex...whatabout concave shapes? whatbaout accuracy? well there is one tech taht has been out there for quite a long time that can do it as we speak
voxel modeling
voxel modleing might not be technically as well implemented as Zbrush tool at the moment but they are at least conceptually speaking the only so far that promises a true scultping approach...true additive volumes and negative carving and as a plus it can unify any type of geo input making it an incredible options for combining in a same model nurbs surfaces, solid models, polygons etc....trough the use of voxel we grasp the flexibility of real life clay...not constrained to a "wireframe" but constrained to a "clay molecule" (voxel0) that can be blended, carve or whatever in total freedom.

Hi Rarufafak..whatever your name is....
I meant the adaptive skin method...with the weird underlying "have to be adjusted until they nearly meet the outside skin" version.
I use Zbrush primarily to produce "2D" images of 3D sculpts. Ive always liked the zsphere method...just hope topology is polished more.

I just watched the adaptive skin video from the Zclassroom too and I found the method not so cool. I thought there would be no need to make fit the structure near the Zsketche...
I will have to experiment this...

I am unable to gain access to the tut web site where I am located at just have to wait until I get to the room to see the new features.
Another 6 more hours or so till Pixologic gets in.
There servers are going get a workout like never before.
Hope they are up to it.

just watched the videos and I have to say the new zsphere sketching feature is a really great addition to the tool pallette - it will make the conceptual process far easier. I agree about the adaptive skin thing but then again I'd better try it all first :)
I'm particularly happy about the noise though - looks like a very useful thing.

The problem is clean projections of a mesh near a t-shaped join in the armature. There, the projection could be self-intersecting unless the underlying armature was made as thick as the mesh. This is likely due to the naive (but easy/fast) way the projections are done.
Given all the research into this stuff, undoubtedly something better could be done (i've seem a few papers in ACM pubs that may give some ideas ), but it may run to slow, especially for the large meshes Zbrush produces.
That said, you could always create both a adaptive skin and unified skin version of the mesh, and when done modeling on the unified skin mesh, project the detail on the adaptive skin.

first of all i would like to congratulate Pixo dev team for what looks like an awesome step forward in the modeling process...excellent work !

If you're that convinced that voxel sculpting is the way, then the match seems simple enough. Zbrush is not just a modeling app. More importantly it was never designed for the type of precision you're talking about. It's an artists tool, in its original intent designed to create images. There's a reason models are called tools in Zbrush. They are a means to an end, not the end in itself. It's up to the creators to decide what they feel they want their tool to address and with the art that gets created with Zbrush, I'm not sure the computational complexities of voxel sculpting would complement it at all. There's speed considerations (if you've used 3DC on a couple of years old workstation like I have, you'd see this immediately) as well as a wholly different take at modeling geometry that would entail possibly starting over from scratch. Especially with GoZ now, you could do any pierced volume work you care to do in an application that supports the feature you want and then come back to Zbrush for sculpting and detailing. In the end, it's not the faddish technical feature that's going to make the art. It's persistent observation, talent, practice and skill. So long a Zbrush doesn't get in the way of that, I'm sure it will be fine.

voxel modeling
voxel modleing might not be technically as well implemented as Zbrush tool at the moment but they are at least conceptually speaking the only so far that promises a true scultping approach...true additive volumes and negative carving and as a plus it can unify any type of geo input making it an incredible options for combining in a same model nurbs surfaces, solid models, polygons etc....trough the use of voxel we grasp the flexibility of real life clay...not constrained to a "wireframe" but constrained to a "clay molecule" (voxel0) that can be blended, carve or whatever in total freedom.I think Gasoil's suggestion is not a bad idea and points out some of the biggest restrictions all existing modeling software has in common.
They all have to deal with a mesh-principle and so you need to retopo when you first didn't care about it during the sculpting process.
Also when you sculpt freely within ZB 3.1, you often come to areas where the digital 'clay' behaves strangely to your manipulation because of cross-sections of the underlaying mesh-topology etc. We all know these ugly spots where the mesh isn't smooth after using the clay- or standard-brush or where these spots remain after smoothing the area.
Getting rid of the mesh-principle would make things a lot easier.
No more need to retopo by hand, no different mesh-topo for different usage, simply sculpt point-or voxel-based and the export uses an automated build-in retopo-function to make it compatible with the render-apps.
Would save a lot of time, I think. ;) <!-- / message -->
is it out yet?:mad:Do you see anything in the headline that the release has started? ;)

I have both 3DC and Zbrush, and after wishing for them, I don't find voxels ( as implemented in 3DC ) all that big of a advantage.
1) It requires beefier hardware.
2) The lack of a underlying mesh removes all constraints from modeling. This suprisingly makes quite a few things more difficult. Since there is no constraint on modeling because of a mesh, you can really dig yourself into a hole, blow away forms you worked hard to set up, etc. I have found back muscles and buttocks very difficult to get right in 3D coat. The voxel based tools make it very easy to 'fill the crack' accidentally.
3) Smoothing is more fidgety, this may be due to the nature of 3DC's implementation than voxels itself.
4) You can't step up or down resolution, and implementing such a feature with voxels is tricky. Using the move tool at high res levels leads to artifacts. Problematic if you need to tweak a basic proportion issue.
5) At large brush sizes, it lags hard.
Part of me thinks these issues may be remedied by a haptic system like Claytools uses.
So it it all bad? No. Between the voxels and 3DC's very powerful retopo tools, you can use them to quickly bang out basic armatures for further detailing.
I DON'T think booleans are coming to Zbrush ever. Its not intended for that. Its like asking Corel Painter to work like Photoshop.
Same goes for advanced rendering, or animation.
But with GOZ, I think we will see integration with good modelers that support the things Zbrush won't, like Silo or 3DC for retopo. Or even Blender.

i second Crusoe the Painter on the difficulty to use 3dcoat for sculpting...really hard to get thing that are a matter of minutes in ZB.
importin gobj files that might be a bit heavy is also tricky and require a pretty powerfull machine.
I love the retopo tools In 3dc though, and if ZB3.5 got some similar tools for retopology, i really dont see the advantage of voxel...
that said, i was more impressed by 3dcoat than mudbox!especially when you compare the price..
the texturing features in mudbox are great though, making bodypaint not as special as it used to be...you need powerfull machine too though (no matter what peaple say, my machine that runs zeddy smoothly strugle with mudbox and 3dcoat, and the longer you are in your sculpting, the slower it gets!
In the end it depends on your needs and worflow, i guess.
But if Pixo add mudbox texturing features and 3dcoat topology tools, or anything similar ...enough said, dreaming dreaming :)
I'm all the way Zbrush personnaly, because of the flexibility of that program!...
o well, not trying to feed the fanboys appetite for war lol
