hmmmmm.....
don't get me wrong, I'm sure this tool is gonna be awesome.... installing it as soon as my disp map is done generating. But I find it odd that Pixologic would release their own suite of painting tools in less time than it takes to just bloody link me over to PhotoShop (the other "PS").
****edit***** I'm a mac user *****
I know I will end up using it for something, especially if I can find a way to drop it to textures.... maybe it works in the projection master.... we will see?

08-03-09, 03:15 AM
okay, maybe i can resist now to hype it,.... but this is really cool. I'll give it a try now. I love Painter and alias sketchbook, etc for their natural style, if this tool manages to do the same, my pipeline will shrink again. =)
For the guys in Europe, its nice news after lunch =)
Imho the name is quite easy to remember, although its a bit confusing in its meanings.
keep it up!
edit: I tried it, and the feeling is great. For me, it also has the "easy sketchbook flair", just open it, and you'll have a canvas and a pencil rightaway.
The only thing I'm missing are the features of the other brushes in Zbrush, like spray, etc. But hey, this version was born hours ago, and its in the best of health. =)
slorpthegillman
08-03-09, 03:42 AM
ok, just tried it. yes, it is cool, but maybe I'm not thinking about this right...
Why have this in Zbrush if it can't be dropped onto a model?
Why have this if I can't take advantage of MatCaps or StandardMats/Lights?
I assume that pixols are behind the depth of the fake brushes, but I can't find a way to paint onto a croppedandfilled displacement map to drybrush over some height (which would be excellent).
Pros: Why buy mudbox or painter if Zbrush can do both?
Cons: because the Autodesk and Corel developers have a narrower task to win at.
I'm scarred for you Zbrush. Stop lying to yourself. You know who you are, you're a 3d program baby, just admit. Although, I'll love you just the same.

This is pretty cool alright, another freebie is always welcome!
Two questions though: Two layers...? Seriously?
Guess this probably means the secret new feature for the 3.5 update isn't photoshop style layers then. Awww nuts!

"I'm scarred for you Zbrush. Stop lying to yourself. You know who you are, you're a 3d program baby, just admit. Although, I'll love you just the same."
Actually, wasn't ZBrush an illustration tool before anything else? It all started with the Pixol, which was a strictly canvas-bound concept originally, right?

Cool plugin, I know it's a bit of a photoshop habbit, but the ability to create more layers would be nice, beside just a top and base layer.
Am I the only person in the universe having problems installing it? I have done exactly as the .pdf installation notes say and now when I try to open zbrush it just hangs at the zbrush logo screen? Anyone else out there having this problem? :o

suweet! :D
Real nice Plug-in, thx pixologic.
But, only 2 layers is very bad solution...
layer, Base and Top only?
Why?
i do not comprise this solution, is very poor, the tool is great and very nice quality of the sign and more...
but only two layer...
Another question:
why i dont see the fusion method of layers?
Multiply, screen, overlay, color, burn, etc?
All Sw of painting have this solution for fusion layers...
I hope for Zbrush 3.5 or 4 this upgrade + multy layers!

When I open Zbrush it does indeed hangs there, then I just click on the screen and it completes the task. Bit odd but not a big problem, I use Vista 64.
I installed this, tested it, works well, I'm quite excited, when I finish working today (deadline day) I'll have great time. Thanks guys, well done.

If you have any problems or questions please post in the

Be sure to include which OS you are using.

This is great. Thanks you Pixologic. This will be a big help with my workflow.
I wish more 3D apps had more 2d sketch tools like this. Everyone knows that a good design starts with a sketch. Awesome!!
Please add wacom eraser support or a least a hotkey for the erase function.
I dl'd this at 5am this morning and just got to try it out. VERY impressed. I'm a huge fan of Sketchbook Pro because of the feel of the main pen tool. PaintStop seems to be close if not just as good but also includes excellent natural media tools similar to Painter Sketchpad and Art Rage.
I have a relatively new Intuos 4 that came bundled with Painter Sketchpad and Autodesk (Alias) Sketchbook. The bunled version of Sketchbook was stipped down to the bare minimum -- what an abomination of anotherwise great program. Sketchpad had a broken installer but no support was provided from Corel. The last place I thought I'd be looking for a sketch replacement was Pixologic. Very happy.

Cool start on integration Zbrush! You needed this bad because of the autodesk graphite tools, admit it ;) I'm sticking to photoshop though until maybe zbrush5 :D
@ jamesleaburn
Oh no!
I do not complain for this plug in...
it is free, ok, but it is very very advanced, only missing functionality really important is multy layers an fusion layers, the qualiti of the all is impressive!
but with only two layer and without fusion method, is one Ferrari without fuel, for me.
@ marcus_civis
Ok, thank you for the comment, i hope with ZB 3.5 or 4, one solution a this problem...
PAINT STOP is impressive, and with Multi Layer and fusion, is very dangerous for Corel Painter, and great tool for all user of Zbrush!
anyway, thank Pixologic for all

08-03-09, 06:45 AM
very nice but no symmetry?I was just going to say the same thing.
First off, thanks for the cool new tool guys!
Here are some key features for future versions that would be kick ass:
1) Symmetry: this is the main reason I use Sketchbook pro. You can render orthos of your basemesh in Zbrush, than sketch your armor, or whatever clothing you want, over these orthos in Sketchbook Pro using symmetry. Great for your initial sketches where your just trying to figure out how things interconnect.
Also, symmetry is great for doodling thumbnails, ala Alchemy.
2) More layers with blending option.
3) Currently, if you use a brush in Paintstop it is available in ProjectionMaster when you switch back. However, you do not have access to the all the other brushes that you did not use in your Paintstop session. Why??
Anyhow, looks really promising, a few more features and we will never have to leave Zbrush, from concept sketch to textured model.

Looks good. So if I install it, will it change my interface, or is there a way to toggle between interfaces?

It looks great BUT i have a strange bug.
When i push the button to past on PaintStop and when i exit the program the result is >>>>> the spacebar shortcut don't work. I need to close ZBrush and "re"open.
Any suggestion??

@Maya4fun:
It switches Interfaces if you activate the plugin.

08-03-09, 07:48 AM
Yep! been using this all day! WHAT FUN!!!
Really nice and natural to use!
I can see this is just the start, there are so many areas that can be improved, but I have no doubt you guys are already well ahead of me on that. I predict by ZBrush 4.0 or even 4.1\4.5 this is going to be one of my most loved features!!! As long as it's improved as we go. ;):tu:
Seriously though, this is a cool plug-in and despite a few niggly absences, I cannot complain about the quality of what's there!
Top stuff guys!! Keep going with it!!!!
You really hit the whole just paint thing, as you did the whole just sculpt thing. :D
EDIT:
Forgot, would be more helpful if I told you what I thought was missing.
1) Tilt detection for intous3 and 4 Wacom tablets.
2) Layers.... a must!!
3) Blending options on both layers and brush strokes.
4) The pop up tool boxes stop you doing anything until you either select an option in that box, or close it with the X. That's annoying really. It would be nice if you just clicked out of the box, it closes or just sits there and does not stop you working.
ZB is turning into something utterly mental and way beyond anything I ever expected. Why not just throw in video and music editing now so I only need one app... :D

Sweet! I really hope I can soon say goodbye to photoshop alltogether
BTW The Horse Rider drawing in the video is amazing! VERY nice James!
Hi, and thanks! :D I really enjoyed using PaintStop and look forward to many more illustrations with it.
This is a great addition to the toolset because ZBrush is so geared towards artists. Use it for concepts prior to sculpting, with projection master to polypaint, or on it's own for finished illustrations. It just makes sense to me because it's already such a uniquely artistic software.
It's a simpler approach to digital drawing and painting, and isn't meant to replace Photoshop's tools. As a very heavy Photoshop and Painter user, I can testify that it's simplicity is what made it so enjoyable to use! Everything you truly need is there and done very well.
Sometimes when working with unlimited layers and adjustments, a lot of valuable imperfections get cleaned up. Approach PaintStop as you would a canvas or sketchpad. Art is supposed to be a little loose ;)

Thankyou!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Being a Freelance 2D Illustrator and 3D Artist i have been really wanting to work more and more with zbrush in a 2d sense, now i have no excuse to even leave the software.
Having used painter and photoshop alot, i really enjoy the feel of the brushes and different mediums. I Still need to play more, and im surely going to do that!
Once 3.5 comes, ive got a feeling that the only Visual creation software open on my computer will be Zbrush!
This is wonderful news. I remember the day i bought zb, with some hesitation.. if id known about these releases and upgrades i would not have hesitated a m/second!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

This is awesome!... Really really cool! Thanks Pix'! As far as natural media tools go this is more than a great start. As mentioned before, better layers support would be cool.
Finally, one comment that's always been at the back of my mind, more of a question really, is regarding ZB's Wacom support for 6D pens. It would be cool as hell to have barrel rotation along with the other features that are supported in other pens, like tilt, for sculpting and 2D. The only programs I know of that support it so far are Painter and Photoshop. Seeing PaintStop just brought it all back for me. I would be cool to hear some thoughts from Pixologic regarding 6D technology and how it could be used in ZB.

Hello,
Many thanks to all the Pixologic team for the amazing works of these months: in a few period so many plug-in and soon the ZBrush 4 version... WoW, a real FireWorks!
Compliments for your incredible work. Is nice to see so many enthusiasm from the software team side... it is contagious :D
Best Regards and Greetings from Italy,
Mattia
Pixologic here's a HUGE thanks! Last week I went out and bought more paper, charcoal pencils, and another kneedable eraser. I did a little search and there were a couple of programs that seemed to do the job, but other software needed purchasing. Thanks to you guys scanning ideas won't be necessary any more!

Pixolator and team just came throught the time warp and brought back the Zx1 ZPulseartor we pulled in to the pitstop to tune the Pulsearators' and she kicks through space like a dream.
I see you put ZBrush in the pitstop and crancked out the Paintstop plugin rev up to Zbrush.
I know the VR adapter for ZBrush has been on the backbunner - cool (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/faq.php?faq=vb_read_and_post#faq_zbc_display_images) to see PaintStop added now for ZPuppeteer of 3d models :)

What a great plugin!! Having fun trying out all the brushes. really great how you can lay down a stroke and then use the transforms, ie scale move or rotate straight after. Loving the clone brush too! Would be great to have layers that you can blend like in photoshop, But all in all, love it! Well done pixologic. :D

Yup, this is a pretty cool addition. Its just going to take some getting used to. I wish there was a drop to canvas option or something. I know there is a way to sample colors in zb like an eyedropper tool but I have forgotten how.
I also wish that there were more layers or it was easier to work with the ones that are there. It is really exciting to think of the illustration possibilities for this. Hopefully there will come a time when I wont have to use photoshop ever again.
Does anybody know if an external file be imported into paintstop? That would be awesome if I could paint up something that was drawn traditionally.

Are you guys able to change the document size? When I click image resolution Width and Height are locked into 960x720. I can change the resolution.
cresshead
08-03-09, 04:47 PM
Very nice!
thank you so much...
Wyatt, you should check your document size configurations in the main interface. Attached is a screen shot of my edit/image resolution tab and I also can't change the width and height, but I can change it under the "document" drop down menu in the main interface.
My thoughts:
1) please include "rotate canvas" at some point
2) making ZBrush a full 64bit app will improve memory management; right now the slow down is too great when changing canvas texture or selecting the eraser
3) as others have said, layers are critical
Otherwise, the implementation is excellent. Great feel.

Just clearing some things up. PaintStop does have layers. Currently you have access to two layers with transparency controls. Layers do not have procedural blend modes... Hint Hint! The layer transparency control's a little funky though coz the effect resembles an overlaid sheet of paper rather than a gel like in Photoshop. Currently, I haven't found anything that does 'drop to canvas' other than exporting it. There's no lazy brush in PaintStop but mouse average is there and it does help smooth strokes out a little bit.
The look and behavior of the natural media tools is pretty good but I wouldn't unistall PS or Painter just yet. I don't really care for the smudge brush coz it's effect is like Photoshops and is too digitized in nature for a natural media tool... Painter smudging good, Photoshop smudging baaaad. Color Blend is a really nice wash tool though... A good wash tool's a hard one.
PaintStop is quite limited compared to Photoshot and Painter. For starters, there are no selection tools and alpha channels or limited Wacom support. It does have masks and stencils though. Obviously, it's not Pixologic's intent to replace those programs, hence the name PaintStop. I think they're just getting back to their roots and balancing out ZB a bit with this plugin which is definitely well suited for that purpose. It would be really nice though to have better Wacom support though. Perferably full support for 6D pens.
Last, this is also currently available for 3.1 on PC in case anyone missed that.

I had stuff I needed to get done today, now i spent my whole day playing with paintstop. Thanks Pixologic, I like it a lot. Photoshop is my main tool for image editing, I had been toying with the idea of upgrading my ancient copy of Painter, looks like that will be uneccesary now. Thanks again.

While im working on a zb sculpt a quickly took a paintstop and did this, thought id share..10 min speedy.
So far im liking the tools, although alittle confused by the layer system, why the white out when top layer is turned on? Would love to be able to drop to canvas.
Gonna try using the main zb layers as brent_m_2000 suggests..
I did start using some of the original 2.5d brushes.. which in conjunction with the new ones gives alot of things to explore!

Did you know that you can move, scale, rotate and even duplicate a stroke after you draw it to your canvas? Well you can!
After you draw a stroke press "W" to move it, "E" to scale it, and "R" to rotate.
To duplicate a stroke press shift+S
If you want to move, scale, rotate, and duplicate more then one stroke at a time,
hold down the "ctrl key" while you draw each stroke. You will then be able to manipulate them all together.

i agree, its a cool release, but i gotta add that the brushes feels almost the same.
and the blending options do not blend, its more of a smudge thing in variation of itself.

Hi,
Regarding the video on PaintStop, Geert Melis does this young boy in a retro space outfit (of sorts).
How can I use the stencil like he is, where he is turning one layer into a stencil?
Thanks
Brandon, I did the following:
I opened my original pencil sketch in PaintStop using
Tracing-> Load Image
Next I did a
Merge with Canvas (again, Tracing Menu)
And then
Layer to Stencil (Masking Menu)
Then I selected Sheet 2 to have a blank canvas to work on.
Selected the HB Pencil draw size set large enough (20+) Color depth around 50%
Pressed Stencil On
Hold down the Spacebar to get the Coin Operatorwhich allows me to reposition/scale/rotate the stencil appropriately.
Rub the stencil part I need with the pencil
Again, Hold down the Spacebar to get the Coin Operator to select other parts of the various sketches on the stencil to combine.
THE STENCIL ROCKS!
Long live the new Pixol. (cited James Woods in "PixoDrome")

Nice program/plug in, would be nice if I stopped using it for a minute so I can get some work done. :-)
Seriously like the program and the interface. Would like my tablet to be able to use the eraser function. I do make lots of mistakes and would like to remove them without using the ctrl Z to undo it. Zoom would be nice to have as a short cut for the tablet.
Otherwise I am very pleased with the program, I hope the next version 3.5 enables me to do more with this great program.

Thanks for a great Plugin, It loads fast, and has robust tool set that's is easy to use.
I was just wondering, I think a few people asked if this will be able to paint on 3D models directly.
If it can't be made to paint directly to 3D as a plugin, is it possible for there be a ZAppLink for paintstop? Or something that works in the same manor?
just wondering :)

Thanks Marcus and Pixologic: Nice job :tu:
Of course this is just utilizing the existing features of ZBrush, so it doesn't have layer blending modes and unlimited layers, layer masking, brush rotation tracking, etc. since all that would require adding capability to the core of ZBrush as opposed to scripting with what is already in it. But it is nicely done, and I appreciate it.
However, knowing what is possible, I do have a couple of requests:
- Brush config/saving:
- My favorite blender in ZBrush is the smudge brush with spray turned on: it is like hundreds or thousands of small, light or medium smudge-dabs all in one quick stroke. It would be great if I could make a brush like this (or any of a hundred other possibilities) and save it. It could be as simple as an extra category that has ten configurable buttons on it, so you could have a set of 10 custom brushes living on it at a time. The ability to use a custom alpha and spray mode to create custom brushes opens up lots of possibilities.
- Incorporate a color palette picker/saver. Having a nice little row of colors beats having to find some spot on the canvas to build this 'manual palette' for quick color picking.
Since both the above functions have already been acomplished in the past with dedicated scripting by users, I know it is easily doable.
Thanks again!!!

The color palette can import adobe swatches in. I believe it can save it out, but im not on a computer that has zbrush on so i can't say for sure. I have to admit i was quite surprised at that and await that feature in 3.5 (it sure saves a lot of time compared to typing in the rgb value of the exact color i want, or painstakingly choosing it on the wheel ;) )

Is is compatible with Wacom Tablets, like Painter and Photoshop, and can you build it in separate layers and bring it into Photoshop still layered?
It's compatible with tablets regarding pressure sensitivity, but not pen tilt or rotation. It's also doesn't have a layer system like Photoshop or Painter, just a base and a top layer. There are some cool features though. It's supposed to be a simpler approach, but with the necessities there and done well.
I use Photoshop and Painter all day, but still enjoy PaintStop quite a bit. It's nice working with a more natural media workflow sometimes, where the imperfections add to the end result. Plus, I think the brushes and textures are very good.

You say it only utilizies the two layers - but in the introduction video someone has a shelf out and is using MANY layers, he has like ten of them active. I think it is the african dog (after writing this I will double check).

Hi,
PaintStop is fantastic.

When I use the stencil and 'rub' through - a residue seems to
remain on the page beyond the stencil design. I can turn the
stencil off and then erase the residue.
Is this normal? Thanks.

Regarding your ? on layers, what you see in the vid are the tabs. They're sort of like separate sheets of paper in a sketchpad. You can merge or switch the two layers, can copy and paste tabs, and load images as tracing paper. You can also create stencils, as you saw in the vid.
So it's not meant to work like Photoshop. It's just a great way to draw and paint. I honestly can't wait to see what you crazy good artists create. There's already some good stuff being posted. :tu:
Regarding the stencil, I did beta test, but didn't have time to really dig in to the features. I just started drawing. So I've only tried the brushes and canvas textures.

Not the tabs, the layers:
But I'm not complaining, just curious. I was trying to figure out how zbrush 2D works today, I have never used it for 2D until now and I'm having a great time with PaintStop. Just what I was looking for in a 2D program, a sketchbook JUST like this!

Brandon,
The plugin uses some extra ZBrush layers for its routines (and for things like a tracing image), which is what you are seeing in that screen shot. If you create extra ZBrush layers you may get unpredictable results!
On the Layer to Stencil feature: the stencil has degrees of masking and the results will depend on the tones that are in the painting you've done.

That image is just a screen capture of the introductory video. Click on Menus on the top right of Paintstop and the normal zbrush menus will appear. To get the right panel open select the sliver of the shelf on the right side of your screen, the shelf will open up. Now open the layers menu. You will see a small button on the top left of the menu - drag this little round button to the shelf and the layers menu will open up in the shelf. As for all the layers that are in that screen capture, marcus_civis explained:

Yeah, this is why I posted that there are only two layers in PaintStop. I tried accessing additional layers from the menus but couldn't get anything to work. Aside from the fact that there are only two editable layers in the PaintStop interface, You can access additional layers from the layers menu once it's made visible. You will see that ZB3 is using additional scripted layers in the background in addition to the two editable layers that are normally visible in the PaintStop interface. You can also create additional editable layers and even draw in them on the canvas. The layer's icon will reflect any strokes applied to that layer. But any newly created layers and strokes will not appear on the canvas even if you reoreder the layers. Perhaps PaintStop is a script that's retro engineered for ZB3, and the implementation of PaintStop's features in ZB4 will take full advantage of a new core that allows you to use more than 2 layers on the canvas. That's cleary just speculation on my part. Damn, oil just jumped another 20 bucks.

I'm probably going to enrage people here, and I apologize in advance, but am I the only one who thinks this seems like an odd and astonishingly elaborate distraction for a company that's missed so many release-targets of its core product? Has Pixologic decided to abandon the 3D field to Mudbox? Surely not.
Congratulations on all the artists who have posted so far. You're very talented, truly. But this is the first time I've felt I was seeing work on the ZB forums that could have been done with another software package.
Was the time Pix spent doing this worthwhile? I sure hope so. For all the people who have raged at delays in releases (which stretched so long that ZB 3.5 was renamed 4.0 to quell catcalls), this kind of thing--while being nifty and all, nevertheless strikes an odd note of discord in me. I find myself flashing back on the voice from Star Wars: "Stay on target. Stay on target."

Ronbo13,
It most cases it's a good idea to sketch out an idea out before beginning a sculpture. It's the fastest way to come up with a sweeping gesture or feeling. I have worked professionally for a long while and there have been times where we 'wing' it without sketches and everyone gets confused as to a direction. Hmm. So, um, I personally love the idea of PaintStop.
@Ronbo13,
Hi Ronbo, I'm fairly new to digital (=2D and 3D). I bought ZBrush because it was supposed to have 2D and 3D imaging capabilities. I loved the workflow of ZBrush, giving me an easy -natural feeling- crossover from my traditional 2D and 3D work to digital. I love how Pixologic refines this 2 and 3D core package with every update. I sculpt daily and sketch/paint daily within ZBrush. Do you think I should buy a second program for drawing/painting? Or should I buy a second one for sculpting?
Quote:"Congratulations on all the artists who have posted so far. You're very talented, truly. But this is the first time I've felt I was seeing work on the ZB forums that could have been done with another software package." I'm a bit confused here; I think the sculpting on ZBC is awesome because it's done with ZBrush, why should all these peole buy other soft? It all costs so much money.
Meanwhile, this ZBrush 3.1 I work with performs really, really great.
Thanks for sharing your opinion -without opinions/opposites, our world could become a dull place.

Pixologic always said they were making a tool for artist to easily express themselves with little technicality. Thus, the key word being "artist"... thus, isn't just limited to the 3D realm. Although, I really enjoy PaintStop. It simulates working on a real life canvas pretty well... in a digital sort of way.

Ronbo13,
I should point out that all plugins are produced separately from development of the core app, and in no way impact on the timings or other aspects of that development.
On the issue of ZBrush becoming a 2D app - actually PaintStop simply builds on functionality that ZBrush has already and has had right from the beginning.

Nice little suite of tools, good for a quick sketching bout.
Soon as I got to this point though, I kind of felt like I would want to push things further in PS or painter, dirt layers, ink splashes, multiple blend layers, etc...

On the Pixologic video 1st page it shows Mauro Patrizi drawing a perspective grid and using striagt lines any info on this was done would be appericated. It seems he draw a single straight line - pressing the lines button - and after that activates rotate mode (R), and make various snapshots (shift+s) of this line, around its rotation pivot.
If you want to make a perspective grid inside Paintstop, you can try the following:
1. Click on menus button, so the default Zbrush menus will show again.
2. On the tools pallete, chose plane3d. Adjust the number of divisions on the Initialize section.
3. Draw your grid on the canvas. And enter rotate mode. Shift+F will make wireframe visible.
4. Now you can adjust perspective using the draw pallete, and the position using move, sclae, rotate.
Hope this helps!

This is a great plug in,thank you very much!
Only a little request(i don't know if it's allready possible),can the size sens have negative values?
A thing I do in Corel Painter is controlling the size of the stroke with the pressure, but inverted,so stroking strong gives me little and black line and stroking weak gives me soft and big size strokes, useful for doing nuances(or maybe using the tilt for that).
Btw,it's great, really good feeling using it.

While i love Zbrush and appreciate the effort, my first gut reaction is,
"Great a program NOT as good as Painter or Photoshop. I don't know why anyone at Pixologic would want to go down this road of being like the 3rd or 4th best painting program out there.
Meanwhile I cant add a new layer if i've added one in a previous subdivision. Nor can i delete certain .ztl's that I no longer need.

I really like the program. Is it ok to toss out a few wants?
Unlimited Layers.
Transparency Slider Control for Layers. This way you can see your ref images contained under the W.I.P. layer better.
The ability to grab colors from ref images. You can do that with the C button, but when you move over to the next layer. The color you grabbed disappears.
Plotted Path Brush control.
Animations: Frame creation ability. Letting the user store the finished frame as a new layer under the next frames active layer, for image flip between/trace/study emulation. Being able to save the final work as a movie file.
Hope this sounds friendly. I really like this plug in. :tu:

:tu: :tu: :tu: Out of curiosity, how long did this take you?
Thanks for this awesome update! I was wondering if there was a way to symmetry paint X and/or Y axis with Paintstop or is that in the works???
It seems reasonable, since you can do it on a 3D plane given that you divide the plane mesh at a good res to get good results.
If not, I will make it a request.
It would be a really cool feature that I haven't found in any other paint software.
:D
I think Sketchbook Pro does that, but awesome idea, I'd find many uses for it.
spaceboy412
08-22-09, 12:24 AM
a workaround would be to either turn one side into a stencil, flip it and then rub your paint through it.
or
copy/import your image flip it and use the clone brush to bring it to another layer.
and of course there's the option to bring it into another program.
personally i don't really understand the need for this myself but i'm sure others do.

Actually I was thinking that if paintstop works with spotlight and lightbox then it may be a photoshop killer for me; depending on how well zbrush4 and its new features work. I am very hopeful though.
The layers thing is a real problem still. I do hope they do something about that in 3.5. Zbrush has layers already so I can't see why it can't work with them. Hopefully it will be fixed in an update as well as an added merge or drop to canvas feature.
Paintstop is also allot slower than the other apps so that is a major downside that hopefully gets fixed in 3.5 or another update. but it is so cool that I find myself trying to work around all of its shortcomings.

well, i haven't drawn in a loooooong time and have never posted any work here, but the talent in this thread (as with so many other posts on ZBC) is really inspiring. so, i decided to give PaintStop a try and see if i could draw an asian woman from memory--so, no reference, which might be apparent, for this one (except a vivid mental image of distaste for my ex-wife who is from South Korea). it's almost eerie how life-like this tool is... i love it!

Very easy to use.
Request a 'random' setting for brushes. For example...the airbrush could have a 'Spatter' setting; the pencil brush could make mutiple random strokes of variable location, rotation, size, value, color with just one stroke of the stylus. Etc, etc.....

10-27-09, 05:20 PM
wow Spunjo!!!! that is BEAUTIFUL!!
Thanks! Hope there's a way to export it may want to make a print. Made it oversize just in case. Love paintstop as painting program :D
pixels per inch is irrelevant until you go to print it out. An image 640x480 is and will forever be 640x480 whether it's 72ppi or 300ppi. Figure out what you need it to be for print resolution (as, again, ppi is meaningless on a computer screen when you're referring to images) and then calculate what resolution you will need (photoshop can do that for you).
Blaine91555
10-27-09, 06:52 PM
Yeah, what he said. Multiply the size in inches you want to print it at by 300 and render at that size. Even better to double that size and render at AAHalf but on this kind of image probably does not matter. You will find that 240 dpi is likely OK also.
An 8x10 would be 2400 x 3000 for instance. Best would be to render at 4800 x 6000 as an AAHalf render.
3D_ARCH
10-27-09, 08:27 PM
'Course larger is better. On the giclee printers 100 ppi might be enough. I have one in the house, 3'x4', like that... plenty good. And ppi is different than dpi. One is associated with a digital image, the other is a feature of your printer.
When zbrush 3.5 paintstop plug-in will be release? I hope not wait until zbrush 4 release.
yes, but they are interchangeable for our purposes. And since a pixel is a dot it makes sense to print out your image at the same dpi that it has as ppi. Again, ppi is only meaingful in the physical world, or within a program that understand inches :)
3D_ARCH
10-29-09, 09:33 PM
How could this not make a difference?
DPI only refers to the printer. Every pixel output is made up of different colored inks (usually 4 or 6 colors, depending on your printer). Because of the small number of colors, the printer needs to be able to mix these inks to make up all the colors of the image. So each pixel of the image is created by a series of tiny dots (you could think of them as sub-pixels). Generally, the higher the DPI, the better the tonality of the image, colors should look better and blends between colors should be smoother. You'll also use more ink and the print job will be slower. You might want to try setting your printer to a lower DPI to save ink and speed up the job, see if you notice any difference in quality. The lowest setting where you don't see any loss in quality should be the best one to use. So a 1200 dpi printer uses 1200 dots of ink in every inch to make up the colours. If you were printing a 300 PPI image, then every pixel would be made up of 16 smaller ink dots (1200 DPI x 1200 DPI / 300 PPI x 300 PPI). A lower DPI would have fewer ink dots making up each pixel, which would make the colour look worse. A higher DPI would have more ink dots for each pixel and should give more accurate colour (especially under close examination).
You are right. I wasn't saying that it didn't make a difference. I think I may have worded my post wrong. By all means use a printer that can print at the highest resolution you can find, regardless of your ppi on your document.
