Stead thy hands and stay thine eyes and ingest these quickening words...let The Monday Night Challenge ensue! :D
Thats right kiddies. I am here to reinstate the Monday Night Challenge. We have a lot of new faces around here and a MNC would help everyone to better understand ZBrush. To "Challenging" users to try more and learn more. Besides...its TONS'O FUN! Through the months, we will be tackling things like low-poly modeling, texturing, combining materials, post effects like hair and fire, lighting, Zifs (ZSpheres)...every facet of ZBrush that can be covered.
Our good buddys Mentat7 and Ron Harris are operators of an IRC channel dedicated to further extend the learning process. We pop in there every Monday and a few times during the week and weekends to provide live help with the challenge (or any other problem, ZBrush or no). I haven't seen them around much but then again I have been a ghost myself. Those of you that are serious about kickin some ZButt are going to have a good chance to do just that. Those of you who just want to participate in the fun, well you're welcome aboard too. Everybody's welcome! Even you High-End users *nudge-nudge*. The Server name is nexus.sorcery.net and the ports are 6667 and 9000. The Channel is #zbrush3 (1 and 2 are closed).
Now, time for some details.
The duration of the Challenge will be two weeks. It used to be only one but a few of us found this to be a little too short. We later tried a month but this proved to be too long for some. So I think two weeks should be just right. You can bust knuckles the first week and get help the next or just take your time...whatever fits best.
For the first few challenges, I will be choosing the topics. I have a few in mind right now to help kickstart everyone. Afterward, someone will be chosen to pick the next topic. After two weeks, this person will choose the next topic starter and so on, and so on.
The challenge is open to demo and full users, old and new. All images and models will be fresh creations...no recycling. Everything must be ZBrush (This includes the render). If you have to do any postwork in painting apps like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop, thats cool but Zbrush should be at least considered for this. It has a good set of postwork tools. Last but not least, we still abide by ZBC rules partaining to content.
Now, The challenge.
This MNC is going to be Head Modeling.
:b3:Must be ALL native ZBrush models.
:b3:Doesn't have to be human. ;)
:b3:High or low poly.
:b3:May use ANY ZPrimitive (Zif, ZSphere3D, ZCube, etc).
:b3:Try to have Eyelids, nose, lips, and ears from the same model (you may attach ears if need be).
:b3:Must include a wire shot. (Uploading tools and ZScripts optional).
:b3:Textured (optional but good practice).
:b3:Try to use two or more materials like
moist lips and eye area (optional but good practice).
:b3:Background optional.
:b3:Eyes, teeth, and hair are also optional.
If anything comes up, I will ammend the parameters of the challenge.
Don't forget IRC.
Good Luck and Happy ZBrushing

I would say this is a good basic start to get the newer members involved in the challenges and to get the challenges back on a roll. I should be in the chat room tonight. Hope to see you all there. :)

:b3:NOTES: :b3:
------------------------------
The head was made from a sphere3d. The ears were made from a sphere3d then placed seperately in the workspace. The hat is made from a hollow cylinder3d. The eyes were painted on the spheres first then the colors were unwrapped and enhanced on a flat background then MRGBZ grabbed.
Here are some wires just for you Mike.

The Namek
07-15-03, 02:46 AM
Irc is a way of communicating with each other , just like the forum only in realtime.
you need a program like http://www.mirc.com
Type in the status window at the bottom
/server irc.sorcery.net
...
wait till it connects
...
Type
/join #Zbrush3
ah, thanks the namek. but is there such a tool also for mac ?
very nice entries already. i like your hat, mentat. my challenge contribution ;)

EDIT : instead of showing only the wire of the final model i made this little tut. not that it is necessary, as we can see by the heads already there :) but i wanted to emphasis a little texture trick pixolator told me once. this is that you can texture and then divide your model further and keeping the texture...

Great to see this back...IRC has been lonely lately...I will have to think about this one... :) :)
Hi everyone and MTB :)....I have never been apart of the Monday Night Challenge so it will be my pleasure to enter.
I wanted to ask if its possible to import say a low poly mesh from another app like Wings and then modify with Zbrush?
BTW wow what awsome creations so far ... Mentat you work is absolutly amazing!!..It will be my ohnour to be able to compete against such great artists as your selves.
All the best and good luck to all :)

Alright! Great stuff guys. Mentat that head is wicked awesome! I wanna see a wire of that bad boy!!
Kircho - One of the main objectives of all challenges is to start and finish in Zbrush...so I am sorry to say no imported mesh. Tell you what though, why don't you post what you were going to import and we will see how to go about making the same starter mesh in ZBrush. :D :tu:

Great looking stuff everyone! Keep it up. We have one more week so if you haven't already contributed I urge you to do so and if you have already posted something why don't you try to take it to the next level...add detailed textures, maybe some props, etc. or maybe do like kokoro has done and make multiple expressions for your character.

I have been there for the past few hours (I don't feel like working anymore today). I will be leaving in one hour but I will be back on in two hours afer that..lol. Just come on in and hang out.

Lots of great looking heads... Im glad the Monday Night Challenge is back and I get my chance at the challenges... Heres my entry, an old Indian Chief, I might add a background and do some more tweaking to it later... I started with a plain old head (Yes I know, missing an ear ;)) but thought it needed more so I did the headdress... No fancy techniques, 3D Sphere head, the two head bands on the headdress were made by mask/invert/inflate on the head model... Skin texture and most painting was done in Zbrush... Some post work in Photoshop... I couldnt get my Shift/Print Screen feature to work, so I posted the tools.

vincentducos: What you can do is put the head on one layer and your plane on a separate layer and possibly paint over the holes. I believe we have seen this before. You can also try the technique described in Pixolators Rusted Golden Idol (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=001484) thread. It gives you a little more control over the shadow and saves on render time a lot of the time.

Saw a cool creature from warhammer on Southern's site , off course I didnt have enough patience to make a complete body for it , so I made a head using glenn's image as a little reference. Then I went over it with the smudge brush and it looked like this :)

Great stuff here! If only if I had a broadband connection ::sigh ::
vincentducos,
Another option you have is to increase the number of shadow rays in your lighting pallette and adjust the aperature to your liking. That should do away with the holes as well.
Here's what I have so far for the challenge.
I'm attempting to do my own interpretation of Weena from H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine".
This actually started out it's life as a cubical skin. I polymeshed together a big box for the head and a small box for the neck, polymeshed them together and then made a cubical skin out of them. I then modelled from there.
I'm also enclosing a Zscript. I refined the model a little further to my liking after recording the ZScript.

I decided to texture this one using TextureMaster. I have finished steps one and two. Here is the texture so far.
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200307/user_image-1058972881nes.jpg
I have put a few notes together to help those of you who may wish to use TextureMaster on your own models. I suggest that you download the
Quick Reference Guides (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=010737) if you haven't already done so and follow the instructions regarding the use of TextureMaster. After you have set everything up for the texture you can use the following tips to help you navigate your way to a final textured object.
Remember these are only tips and guidelins...feel free to adjust them to suit your own workflow and habits.
I generally break the texturing phase down into 5 parts. Base coloring, Shadows & Hilights, Blending, Detailing, Tweaking.
:b3:Base Coloring
When I am first setting up my texture I will choose a dark color in the same color scheme that I am planning to texture in. I do this just before I generate the initial new texture so that the model will be already filled with this color when I drop it. To do this make sure you are in edit mode then choose the color, enter a texture size in the TEXTURE pallete and click on NEW (see the TextureMaster Quick Reference Guide). I am then ready to begin texturing. I drop the object and use various brushes along with Spray Stroke to lay down a texture pattern. Then I choose a darker color and begin blocking in dark areas of the model. I then choose a lighter color and block in lighter areas of the model. I then pick the model and repeat the process on all sides. You can use the B & F (back and front) option in TextureMaster to help you texture both sides of the face if your model is symmetrical. It will be necessary at times to rotate your model to a strange angle in order to reach areas that were unreachable and consequently missed during your initial coloring. Make sure when you do this that you turn OFF the B&F function. It would be wise to turn on the ATC (Auto Texture Clone) function in TextureMaster until you feel comfortable with the process. This feature will automatically create a duplicate of the current texture on your model each time you drop it. That way you can always select the previous texture from the TEXTURE pallete should you mess up the texture in a later stage.
:b3:Shadows & Hilights
I work the same way as I did in the first phase....turning and rotating the model, paint, pick, rotate, etc. In this phase I use the Highlighter and the Simple Brush to paint in shadows and Hilights. Be careful and use small RGB settings. It is very easy to overdo it at this stage. The Highlighter brush is especially prone to oversaturation and could give you same very nasty coloring. So use it in moderation. You can experiment with other brushes and brush settings at this stage as well. The Intensity brush works well for some applications as does the Paintbrush with Bristle Mode on. Feel free to experiment and find the tools that you feel most comfortable with. I generally do a quick shadow and highlite setup across the entire model then I go back and use a small brush size with higher RGB settings to paint in tighter details and lines. The idea here is to get 90% of your shadows and hilights completed during this phase. You will tweak them later.
:b3:Blending
During this phase I look over the model and try to locate any abnormal color seperations. These generally occur during the the first two phases. You will often seen a harsh line form where you were texturing an area that covers another part of the model. You can work these areas out by using the smudge and blur tools. Remember that you are not limited to painting on texture. You can smudge and manipulate your texture as well and TextureMaster will pick it up when you push the Pick button. Again, rotate the model, drop, smudge and blur, pick, rotate, etc etc. Work around the entire model until you are satisfied.
:b3:Detailing
During this phase I use various brushes and higher RGB settings to drop in detail. The DOTS stroke is ideal for this as is the DRAG RECTANGLE stroke. This is the stage when you will paint in fine crisp detail such as skin cracks, wrinkles, warts, bumps, etc. Remember that the key here is to use a higher RGB setting. At low texture sizes the colors will tend to bleed a bit on the edges so stronger colors are necessary. You can experiment as long as you have the ATC button activated in TextureMaster. If you don't like the results you can go back to the last texture in the TEXTURE pallete and try again. You can use this stage of the process to actually paint in detail that didn't otherwise exist in the mesh.
:b3:TWEAKING
Obviously texturing a model is a somewhat lengthy process and problems and oversights will occur. During the last phase of the texturing you will tweak the model....you will correct minor flaws, add additional hilights and shadwows as necessary, reinforce the color of washed out details, etc. Basically make your final corrections and then you are done. Make sure to save your model and when it asks if you wish to save the associated texture click YES. Also after you have finished you may choose a material that has a color bump setting in it. You may see a grid pattern appear in your texture. If so simply go to TOOL>INVENTORY>EXPORT and export the model as an .obj file. Then deselect the model and clear the screen. Then draw the model out onto the workspace again (it is not necessary to import the .obj you created - the process was used to fix the ZTool). You should see the grid pattern is now gone. This works most of the time. There have been a few occasions that it hasn't work for me but it is usually not too detrimental to the texture.
Again these have just been my own personal tips and guidelines. Feel free to develop your own. There are so many more things you can do in TextureMaster that I haven't even mentioned so if you have questions or problems feel free to ask me about it and I will attempt to steer you in the right direction.
Cheers,
Lonnie
:)
here's mine :). all one sphere3D that i really messed up lol. i know its weird but hey :) no texture on it just some lighting that i thought looked interesting. the reason its a weird alien head is i couldn't decide to do a human or an alien so i did an alien with both ;)

Coffin, I really like the lighting on that one. :tu:
Here's the latest update on mine.
To reiterate, I'm doing an interpretation of the character of "Weena" from H.G. Wells "The Time Machine".
There's a ZScript that I posted of my head modelling session that's further up in this thread on page 5.
The hair was done with the snake hook. More work will be done on the hair later. I did a little more work on the coloring and material on the lips and adjusted the teeth a little bit. I also added eyelashes with the simple brush, but I still need to make them darker.
The body was a separate Zsphere object placed below the head.
Eventually she's going to be holding flowers in case your wondering what's going on with the hand.
For the tunic, I made a lower-rez and slightly smoother copy of the body ZSphere and placed it on a separate layer and did some erasing. The sleeves were added on using a tapered hollow cylinder. Wrinkles were added with the simple brush and the hook brush at the borders (using a very large draw size for the hook brush).
The pattern was done using the sperical blend material with a different alpha loaded into channel one.
Edit: The placement of the head was a little off and it was driving me crazy and I couldn't go to sleep until it was fixed. :)

Here's an update. I added a background as well as some additional details and some material tweaking. The head in the previous post was a little too young-looking. Hopefully I succeeded in making the face look a little more mature.
After this, I'll be doing some post-work. Plus, the eyelashes still could use a little tweaking.
I guess I went a little beyond just head modelling with this challenge. I'll try to do another head by itself before Sunday.

Well, I'm calling this finished now.
Most of the postwork was on the hair using combinations of the smudge brush and the simple brush using the "once color" button in the picker pallette. Then I added hightlights with the highlighter brush.
The rest of the postwork was fixing up some things here and there, such as the border between the jaw and neck and the shading on the hair flower, etc.

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>At low texture sizes the colors will tend to bleed a bit on the edges so stronger colors are necessary.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Kokoro stronger RGB values do not prevent bleeding. I simply use stronger RGB so that in the event bleeding does occur my color does not get washed out completely. A low RGB value in the color may in some cases result in the bleed completely washing out the color and you get nothing more than what looks like a stain. :)

This is probably the final texture. All of this was done in TextureMaster. There are a few flaws in it which were unavoidable due to the fact I only used a 2048 x 2048 texture. I should probably have made a 4096 x 4096 texture.

What have we here? A rendered ZBtool, tilted slightly forward
and placed here with no postwork.
This is not a good model, the
modeling needs to be completed. And it lacks 'life', although has potential.
Most of the Deadman models, have only achieved half the 'life' they contain,
this is attributed to laziness.
This tool here is posted to portray incomplete sculpting.
In the near future an update will be posted which will hopefully
help others recognise their own sculpting abilities.

Hi guys,
This is my first head. Excuse the pinch on the nose, I realized half way through that I was modeling with the top of the sphere facing me (stupid noob!)
I don't know how to place in eyes yet, and haven't even tried texturing.
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200307/user_image-1059248395zkx.jpg
Hi guys,
after an arduis 2 hours of modelling I have completed at least the modelling stage of my face.....Initially I was trying to model a burns victim and then and old man and somewhere during that I think I reached a half way point between the two :D ..
If I get some time today I hope to add some alpha maps with pours and maybe try on the tri shader.... ::
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200307/user_image-1059258003two.jpg
The reason why some of the parts are chopped off and the head is at funny angles is that I had problems creating the polymesh after MMing the eye balls in..?...I think maybe a poly overload....130 K without eye balls.
Here are some more shots ::
http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/uploaded_from_zbc/200307/user_image-1059258214ret.jpg
Also as some of you have probably already noticed there are black spackles in the eye area...After I subdvided this area a couple of times I was getting these little dots...and when I turned to mesh mode the polies in that area were green??
Anyways...I'm not complaining alhtough it would be great to be able to edit objects while in MM mode and not be able to move points on a model when they are hidden!!...its was great fun making this and I must thank you MTB for the challenge it has really helped me get back on track interms of my modelling0 :tu:
===================
Just a small update as promised, as its the final night of the challange. This is my first experiment with the tri shader and its works amazingly well. If by tonight I don't add the alpha map and eyes balls this will be my final image ::

Hi Kircho
Glad to see you're back into the modelling - after an enforced break I find myself slipping away too.
I've seen a couple of people mention that it isn't possible to edit multimarked objects recently so thought I'd stop and say, the good news is, yes you can :)
Check out this thread (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=009664) for details.
You can also obviously edit your polymeshed object; this thread (http://www.pixolator.com/zbc-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=011335) explains how to select and mask separate parts of it to make this easier.
I think the speckles you are seeing are a graphical glitch rather than a problem with the mesh. I have encountered them several times on high poly models, especially when switching the wireframe on and off. They have always disappeared with texturing.
Hope this helps :)
Looking through all of these pages there's a lot of amazing work... modeling, texturing, lighting, eyeballs and ears, rendering, details, designs, emotions and expressions, animations, and tips. Great work, everyone! :D

struggling with the same old problem...
giving different bumps (in extenso : different
materials) to a model is a nightmare.
i don't get it. i'll give another shot at
the quicklinks, and threads, and tuts, but
it seems useless. i'll always have the seam.
i know it's a well documented feature, here
at zbc, but if such a thing is possible,
will any master take the time to do the
most valuable Zscript tut, SHOWING how the
heck this effect can be achieved ?
anyway, this little Pelicalien has two materials
on him. but i had to blur the seam.

btw: he's got no ears, mostly because of his brain's size, that allowed a good thelepatic
abilities development. ;)

Hello everyone,
This is my very first posting. I am uploading a quick and simple (well, not too simple) Sphere3D modeling. I was just messing around, learning the tools.

Color in Photoshop (But I now use the Projection Master - really cool and less of a headache)

Tell me what you think.

P.S. Also visit www.swiftdev.com (http://www.swiftdev.com/) - 3D Web Application with animation. Will be looking for 'fur' on here for Zbrush. Love the Zscripts! What a concept!
