How many ZBrushers/Artists here are left handed (raises hand)? I've heard something about the ratio of right handed to left handed people being about 9:1, 90% to 10%.
I don't believe your handedness determines your artistic ability, but it's always interesting to see who's left handed. In school, in practically all of my classes, I was always the odd one out, the only left handed person. People just couldn't understand how I held my pencil with my hand curved around it instead of holding it out, and drew with it as well :P .
So, raise your hand if you're left handed!

My art teacher once told me it was beneficial to be ambidextrous. I just can't seem to do anything with my right hand because I need it to be curled around a pencil, lol.
ambidextrous, after the graphic design school

Well how long would it take for a left hander to be able to use his right just as easily as he does his left?

Right hand on the mouse, left hand on the tablet. I get the "Look how he's holding his pen!" quite often, it's annoying. :P
Well.. it took me about two years to be "ambidextrous"... but there are some things i can't do with the left hand....
By now i am able to use the pencil in the right hand and the eraser in the left hand, sculpt with two hands, eat with two hahds, laptop's touch pad, and mouse with two hands.... and some more
My left hand is still a little dumb in detailing drawings :o

I can kill like a madman with my right hand when playing shooter games
so it must be precise but when it comes to creating stuff its useless.
I also always hold pens very straight almost vertical and in school i was
known for destroying them that way :D people werent very friendly when it came to borowing me a pen^^

My girl is lefthanded and she's ZBrushing too ::Out of the Dark (http://colocat.deviantart.com/art/Out-of-the-Dark-110218436) ;) I remember, at communication design school we could do holding hands while writing stuff *love* :D
A friend once told me, that 50% of people are lefthanded. But most of them were thaught to use the right hand and never noticed themselves. He said, maybe I am lefthanded too nevertheless I'm using mostly the right hand ... who knows ...

My mom told me that in the 60's and 70's, throughout her entire school life, students were forced to use their right hands, even if they were naturally left handed. She said that they'd slap your hand with a ruler if you ever used your left hand.
Nowadays the only thing that irks me is drawing with my left hand. I've been praised by friends, teachers, and people that like that I am really good at traditional art with my left hand, but, ironically, I HATE drawing with a passion, because it's limited strictly to one dimension. I love doing everything in 3D...
And could a right handed person confirm this for me: When I draw with my left hand, I tend to hold the pencil vertically, and this produces many problems when trying to draw detail, or draw something really small, and I tend to pinch the tip of the pencil with my fingers and press hard into the paper involuntarily. I have heard that right-handers don't have this problem, and they hold the pen/pencil outward.
i brokle my right hand, and wont be able to use it for a month, so i will try sculpting with my left, anyone its possible to learn to use your left hand for it in 2 weeks ?;]

I would just try it - as teen I made drawings, some with left, some with right, and the ones with the left hand were a little harder to make, but better

"in the 60's and 70's, throughout her entire school life, students were forced to use their right hands"
Same crap here but in the 80`s. So I am left handed but now I write and draw with my right hand and I use the left for almost everything else (ping pong, carrying stuff, holding a bottle and barfights :))

Raise hand too. I am a left handed artist... that was forced to use the right hand for writing since i went to the fist class ... this was in the 88 an 89 in the east part of germany (also known as DDR) ... sad thing is, that my manually written words are looking crappy (and sometimes i have to stop writing for seconds for no reason (similar to blackout)) but in school i could draw and write at the same time.
Drawing and modeling in zbrush is a fantastic workflow ... mouse in the right and pen in the left.
But tasks like thinking about a topic and talking the same time lets me stuck every time. Its hard to get new clients with this unsecure behavior.
I never got rid of that. An i think its resulting from that my first teacher forced me to use the right hand for years.
My daughter seems to be lefthanded too because me and my girlfriend are lefthanded.
Good to see that there are a lot lefthanded Zbrushers with similar experiences in their youth.

i am left handed :D !! and yeah, sometimes is very difficult, to get the pencil of the tablet and the other hand with the mouse, the mouse is in the right side, and when i need the mouse cursor, im just got crazy with so much movements that i have to do haha : (. :tu: << left hand yees! haha
i'm right handed, but every now and then i try to write or draw with my left hand. i'd like to be ambidextrous so i have a back up hand

Leftie, and usually have to keep the right side of the table clean that i can put the keyboard there, because i rather put the mouse off hand to use shortcuts, while keeping the pen in hand, at least for ZB.

I'm a lefty, although I shoot pool and shoot guns either left or right.
When it comes to drawing, writing, and playing the guitar I am a lefty:)
I have a left-handed guitar.

Lefty also, but I have heard it was 15%.
Anyway, at least we are more natural using a pen and mouse simultaneouusly.

I keep my Wacom on the left side of the table and when doing ZBrush or Photoshop I often switch between the mouse and the pen. Seems like some tasks are better suited for the mouse while the pen is a must with most tasks such as detailing, but the left hand is employed in either case;)
Left with writing tools and stylus/tablet, right for mouse and everything else

I guess we double handers are actually going to lead the world soon.

I own a Tattoo studio with 6 artists including myself, and I believe 5 of us are left-handed. I think right-brained people gravitate toward art.
