Man, you guys are on a roll lately. Good news!

Although, having an infinite number of images has limited use to a lot of people (including me), I rarely if ever use ZBrush for painting because there are no layers/blending modes for textures. Hopefully we'll have texture layers in Z4! :)

The interface for Spotlight and Lightbox seems pretty sweet. Seriously, I can't wait for this. These are some well thought out features. And this is a small sample? Pixo must have the monolith from 2001:A Space Odyssey in their basement because 3D evolution never looked so promising. :)

Looks like it could be very useful. I could use references easier in zbrush on my laptop where I don't have the luxury of 2 screens. Are the billions of polys possible because of z 4 being possibly 64 bit? I'd like to be able to use 6 gigs of ram for zbrush sometime!

As wonderful as this looks to me (And it does). :)

The main thing that wasn't well presented in clarifying a 'real change' from this presentation of the newer Zbrush..
Was the no word, or definite showing wether pixologic has taken the time to scrap the necessity that Zbrush artists must subdivide their models to gain true pixel color information when painting a model inside zbrush. :td:

Believe me this is a real doozy to see. But until I know that I can paint on my models, with the lack of need to subdivide to a high, unrealistic pixol count that my computer alone cannot handle. I see no need to resort to zbrush for texturing, despite what nifty tools it may allow when proceeding a texturing alternative. :(

Never the less bring it on I can't Wait!! :D

"Out with the Tech, on with the Brush! It's ZBRUSH!" :D

Thank You, Pixologic, for listening to the community and for releasing teaser information on future products.

This is how you keep your client base from jumping to Mudbox.

I understand that you never want to release too much information or even release it too early as to give you competitors a leg up (ANTZ, think Pixar).

This gives me high hopes that we will see 4.0 this August and that Pixologic has definitely grown up with its software releases.

Well done.

uh oh. I need to say that I'm more in awe of the low expectations of the crowds here than the actual demo. I'm not so inclined to sing praises to features that have been in other programs for ages (except for that browser thingy, that looks new and handy) and shoud have been in zb since v2. This also didn't show any signs of having layered painting or layer blending, but maybe that wasn't the point in this presentation. Keeping my hopes up still.

06-10-09, 12:40 AM
well I don't see what's so exciting in this video but I hope I will be proven wrong once I get my hands on these tools.

but an image browser, projection painting (image plane anyone? ok it seems more effective but still it looks like nothing that wasn't possible already), new interface that makes zbrush even more messy, image correction tools that I probably will never use... well its a really disapointing teaser for me, was much more impressed by gozbrush and decimation master
I would love to see layer painting instead for example, one simple feature that really would be awesome, but let's still hope its there :)

gpepper
06-10-09, 12:45 AM
Another tool which looks Superfluous but a tool which could become indispensable !

You guys always find new ideas which help us, Zbrushers to go faster and faster in our workflow !
Thanks again ! ;)

Nemoid
06-10-09, 01:10 AM
I think they added lots of new image processing tools which are useful it surely will be a workflow enhancements allowing for speed.
I like the concept of the circle sort like a pie menu on steroids + placement tool, if i've ot that right.

what i'd like to see is painting workflow enhancements for low poly, with layers, and fusion methods , and also an awesome workflow for creating all the different maps required for 3d easily within Zbrush without so many passages.

also, enhanced retopology/rigging tools.

however I think Z4 will rock as always. ;)

slocik
06-10-09, 01:10 AM
seems cool and all, but where are the interface changes ? Its already dated by at least 5 years, even after 6 yers of using zbrush, i still hate it and it gives me a lot of problems. I hope they will show more O_o

Looks like Bodypaints days may be numbered.

Yeah, because who needs support for multiple texture channels, multiple layers per texture, or PSD file format?

Honestly... the tech is very impressive, but pretty basic industry standard features are still missing. No animation studio will throw out their licenses of Bodypaint (or mudbox...) just because of this.

CrazyMatt
06-10-09, 01:52 AM
True, unless as I mentioned earlier..

IF pixologic has made Zbrush 4 capable to allow the artist to paint on like 50 polygons (not hundred, thousand, or billion) but just 50 regular polygons with accurate pixel information and not some blur 1x1 pixel.

I think Pixologic is in for a long ride with this new Zbrush to be out.

I think Pixologic is in for a long ride with this new Zbrush to be out.For low poly model, it is the UV map method that yield optimum pixel to pixel alignment, the blur effect only make the seam less obvious above 1024 resolution.
No optimized UV mapping algorithm can address this except manually align the UV seam border to match by the amount of pixel and UV mesh angle.
I have prepared a set of such models for free at:

This is great - I hope ZB4 will take advantage of Snow Leopard technology and will be a full 64-bit capable application for the mac! this alone will be worth the anticipation. We - mac people - also need zapplink 3 as soon as possible...

I'm sorry but I don't get what you mean here - however I speak from experience as our texture artists make full use of layers and the ability to paint color, spec and other maps at the same time... all currently quite impossible in Zbrush.

just drag and drop various reference images and composite their useful bits for a good polypaint job. Just like that. how convenient. The turtle character illustrated it best. There is that warp and liquify feature too, to wrap and fit everything in . Cool.

Now please give us a retopology magic trick just like this. Save us from third party modeling software pleeez . I know you'll do it. I know it.:):tu:

Very cool presentation.

For all those wanting what you want, just remember we all have wants, not all of them are the same.

Now from what I see in the presentation, speed in production from A to B is going to increase drastically with far more creativity.

This seems to address one of the major production complaints/issues I have seen across the industry for years. The ability to get to fast work ups early on to prevent issues later on.

Building on the quality tools is important. Since 1.0, Zbrush has been speeding up workflows in each iteration. Nothing is ever going to be perfect, but this along with those plugins released earlier are sure moving things along to a creative, free flowing environment.

For those thinking the other apps they have are better, well, time will tell.

Summer is looking kinda cool. ;)

promising. definitely faster polypainting.

but I agree with the polypaint texture resolution problem. unless we subdivide to a very very high polycount we get low-res textures by polypainting.

I hope you guys solve it too. I dont like bodypaint but I have to use it.

Hello all, bravo for the new features.
But, what if ... i could have a real 3d cam to import/export seamlessly to (your favorite 3d app) ?
Is zbrush 4 the answer?
Seriously, i'm delighted by all those great new features, but a camera, pfff, some calibrated/matchmoved camera implementation is a priority, much more than an embedded browser.
3D paint a la 3dcoat is the huge cool plus, really glad to see it in zbrush, but what if ...
Okay, vive zbrush but give us a real solid cam to work with, and i'll be singing ZB's praises.

The best feature they showed in the video is Texturing with Poseable Symmetry.

Most of the rest seem to be (welcome) advances with regard to the previous Zapp Link control.

I hope Pixologic understands what is needed most is LAYERS FOR TEXTURES and VOXELS as well as better support for transparency and raytracing in renders.

Maybe those are included in Zbrush4. I hope so.

are you going to put layer functionalities and multi layered PSD support, otherwise it all looks very fancy but not very production friendly..This!!! this!! production friendly = key! If I'm doing a job in a production pipeline and my vfx or modeling supervisor comes and tells me to change anything I basically have to repaint the entire thing if I used ZBrush to do it. I learned my lesson very early on this front and have been using Bodypaint ever since.

Z-Brush is going to take over the world!!!

I wonder if I'll have to buy a new machine to run Z4 with Billions of polygons, seeing how I can only put up to 2GB of ram on my machine.

Awesome!!! :D

This new stuff is all very well and good and in some cases may be very useful but for a company that has a track record of FAILING miserably to be ON TIME and ON PRODUCT COMPLETION (ie STABILITY etc) I see this as a distraction. If they have such a hard time getting their coding right and all then how can they justify using their coding staff time on these bells and whistle aspects.
I would rather prefer a really boring but STABLE Version 4 where all the MANY problems and workflow stuff ups have been TOTALLY fixed.

Come on Pixologic - please do not relaease another unfinished misery product where "WORKAROUNDS" are the course of the day.

This really looks awesome! Altough... I REALLY hope they add "photoshop style" layers for textures. As it stands right now, I know a lot of people who simply cannot work with zbrush for texturing because of the lack of flexibility this create.

I simply do not understand why they have 3d layers (which are rather innovative and new) yet layers for textures that are already available in photoshop, bodypaint and mudbox are missing. Having to work seeing only the effect of 1 layer without any blending mode is rather limiting =/

That's a rather useful feature. And it undoubtedly makes the workflow smoother (although the hyper-speed in all these videos helps a bit).
However I agree with other people in the forum who claim that:

1) A rock-solid stable release of ZBrush should get higher priority: the bugs and limitations of the previous versions have been sometimes way too frustrating.

2) Layers and Blending Modes (like in Photoshop) would have been more welcome than this fancy feature.

If these two requirements were ever fulfilled, I will have found the perfect software for expressing my creativity without the need to resort to other packages just to do small tasks that ZBrush can't still do (properly).
Too many people (also in Pixologic) seem to forget that many folks would love to use Zbrush also for only 2D art.

Hi I am new to ZBRush.

I saw one feature on that video that can't be for real... From a picture the head model is created without the need to create the geometry?

The black girl head, was it modeled previously and then just applied texture or is there some sort of wizardry going on?

Incredible. I don't know how such an awesome product can be made better, but Pixologic always thinks of a way to do something groundbreaking. Features you never even thought you might need make their way into ZBrush and then you wonder how you ever did without them.

Is there any way you guys can program something that reads my mind, so I don't actually have to sculpt my model? I just think and a fully detailed model appears perhaps? :D

I really don't see what the excitement is all about! I thought ZBrush was developing into a world-leading sculpting tool for 3D professionals? But after watching this I am very sceptical and afraid that Pixologic has decided to go after the lucrative hobbyist "can-do-everthing-no-skill-required" massmarket.
Half the time I had the feeling I was back in the nineties watching the first release of Kai's Powertools. I'd rather start paying for upgrades and have Pixologic focus on making the existing toolset (which is amazing enough as it is)
rocksolid. They can start with the ability to import textures without having to hit the "flip vertical" button.

Still loving you....

Zbrush can't make a good artist out of anyone. Everyone that make awesome art in ZB usually has solid Pen, pencil, and Brush experience. I do not, but i know enough the know that!

I see this as Pixologic narrowing the gap between Imagination and Manifestation FOR THE ULTIMATE WIN!!!

Just watched the video for a second time, still amazed.

As for anyone griping about what ZBrush can't do, or the occasional glitch (and I have had only a few myself), I'm sure Pixologic is addressing the problems. They read our posts and I doubt seriously that they would simply ignore them. As it has been said, industry professionals are now using ZBrush and Pixologic is aiming to please them as well as the hobbyists. I just saw ZBrush in use on an episode of Science of the Movies.

As someone who used ZBrush when there were:
- no ZSpheres
- no retopology
- no subtools
- no matcaps
- only standard, move and smooth brushes
- just good old fashioned balls, cubes and planes
- polypaint was just a plugin called Texture Master...

... I am always pleased when new things are added. ZBrush is still one of the most inexpensive packages out there as it is still growing. Be patient. I do agree on one thing, however. Pixologic has not released updates when announced. I can live with that because I still get a great product to use in the meantime.

So i suppose your a pro, what exactly takes to make zbrush a pro tool and not a toy besides the texture thing you said. "no-skill-required" dosent mean "no talent required" pixo is just removing that barriers between you and your talent, anyways i woundt know until i see the thing myself for now is too early to tell

Wow, thats amazing, are you trying to kill Photoshop? :)gonna be hard to do without layers :)

maybe they're trying to kill MS Paint heheh

So i suppose your a pro, what exactly takes to make zbrush a pro tool and not a toy besides the texture thing you said. "no-skill-required" dosent mean "no talent required" pixo is just removing that barriers between you and your talent, anyways i woundt know until i see the thing myself for now is too early to tella pro tool is pipeline friendly. zbrush is kinda pipeline friendly because so many people have used it and developed workarounds for it. GoZ (assuming it works), will make zbrush more pipeline friendly. If you're just a hobbyist and are using zbrush to just play around and make personal artworks, it works fine for what it is. In the real world though, you're not making art for yourself, you're making it for someone else- and there are ALWAYS changes.

for example- if I was making that turtle in the video, my art director might come and say to me "hey, I showed the client what you gave me and they asked for the stripes to be more red, and bigger". So now in zbrush I have to start all over again, because there are no layers.. which makes it bad for a pipeline, and not something that professionals will typically use. I know of some concept artists who use polypaint, but only for sketches. When they start seriously developing a concept they move to Bodypaint, Deep Paint, or photoshop. Polypaint is a hobbyist's toy right now

with wealth of images online today tons references are now going to be almost at our finger tips and now for most stuff we won't need to hop back and forth between PhotoShop. It's worth noting that in most countries- this is illegal. You can use images as reference, but as soon as you start hitting up google images and grabbing them off of websites to paint your models, it's copyright infringement. A grey area that nobody really pays any attention to, but before now there was never a 'google image leech' button in a professional application :P

Real texture artists own cameras ;)

Francis Bezooyen

Just thought I'd back up what eldee.s is saying. Having been texturing profesionallly for some time, I watched the video feeling perplexed, asking myself, "am I crazy?" because I can't imagine anyone doing serious texture work that way. Maybe for some small game props, but everything else - no - you need more isolated control over inidvidual features, because:

those may need to change, as per eldee.s's example of changing colors and thicknesses of stripes on a turtle, and not only when the client asks, but if you change your own mind
a high-quality texture job will probably not involve converting the color map directly to bump or specular, as the information frequently needs to be heavily edited for those addtional maps, and having different features of a map on different layers makes making those changes far easier.
In short, I really think that layered texturing and .psd file support are absolutely necessary as a minimum for Zbrushes texturing tools to be production ready, and even then I'd probably use it only as a support to photoshop for seaming and other odd jobs, because the tools that are available in photoshop are just so much more advanced.

What I would like to see, is Zbrush team up with Adobe, providing Adobe with the 3D technology to handle high poly meshes directly in Photoshop. in my opinion, the combined abilities of ZB and PS (plus a few features from Bodypaint) would be a dream come true for texture artists.

Having said all that - I do love ZB, and am really looking forward to version 4!

Cant wait to try out the new stuff in Z4
Looks pretty simple to use to.

some folks are unsatisfied with ZB's painting tools. Pixologic has worked on improving them. They're still complaining about it. Maybe it is time to start charging Pro prices.:o

Maybe it is time to start charging Pro prices.:oYikes! please, not that.

As for the rest though - personally, I'm just trying to back up someone who's making a valid point, and hope to clarify the realities a little. Being dissatisfied with some features certainly does not mean that one does not love the tool, as I surely do. There is no doubt that pixologic has made a fantastic product, and not just for the price.

Cheers

People are already assuming there won't be layered painting in Zbrush 4. Why don't you give them a chance to reveal all of the new tools first. Keep in mind, you always save the best till last.

MCNobody's assuming anything.. we're talking about Z3 in the current production pipeline, and hoping Z4 doesn't choose gimmicky new features over core features and bug fixes :)

To what extent is the projection painting already built into zbrush?

I've watched the videos for texturing a head model and warping the image to match the model. I am trying to find a tutorial that could help me texture an entire room from various photo's (minus that fancy new browser) where I can quickly position them and scale them and paint them where needed.

Any tips? I just finished UVing the scene and Im about to move everything in zbrush.

Actually, If I had to make a guess, it would be that layered texturing will be in ZB4. It seems like a very logical next step, unless pixologic plans to abandon the texturing paradigm all together, and I think that Spotlight and Lightbox show that they do not.

I think I've just been responding to the workflow that seems to be suggested by the demo, which in my view is not well suited to serious texture work. However, I'm sure someone has a use for it, such as concept artists or productions that differ from those that I have worked on or been familiar with in some significant way.

Meanwhile, I remain hopeful that layered texturing, and maybe even psd support, will be a feature of ZB4.

I myself have gathered an excellent collection of High-Res images from all over the internet (I'm assuming Spot Light will be usable on and off-line) and there are more than a handful of dedicated texture websites out there.

the color matching is something that really interested me and making Moon Babies

Well, Now we got a stencil that behaves like a stencil besides an alpha, and besides, we can do equitative colors corrections, flexible deformation of the image, transformations of the image... a total independence of a 2d software like Photoshop, or gimp.

This is really great. Well done, Pixologic, we need it for speed improving. Thanks.

I would add with exception to Vectors ...ZBrush doesn't have vectors.
And they are really nice for text and making cool scalable design patterns.

the Day ZBrush gets Vector Master it all over. Being able to put precise vector patterns on your model is priceless.

Yay! Finally someone that shares my thoughts! :) Never quite understand why the 3D world doesn't embrace vectors more - be more flexable in importing vector art & stuff. I understand that if the art is complicated it could be quite a strain on the program but isn't that always the case?..

Imagine what you could do with the lossless scalability of vector graphics in combination with 3D...! :D

Anyone find out the name of the song that was used in the demo real?

Still like the demo real, real slick

Hat off to the method used to display the power of this great program

Would it be possible to download?

you got it right 2nd time ...its most likely a modified demo head that come with ZB3. but the way the video looks it kind even makes me feel like the geometry just makes it self FTW!

I'm putting some of my projects on hold just for Z4

I feel the next big feature will have the word mixer in the name

I wish Zbrush 4 could Model sculpt 3d meshes from photos that would be an helpful improvement

Anyone here still amazed that we get these upgrades for free? Any other software package offering this kind of upgrade path? (Probably shouldn't talk about it, though. Don't want to be remembered as the "guy who wrecked it") I imagine the good will just keeps more people adopting Zbrush. Imagine that keeps the new users flowing in. I know that I keep evangelizing it to anyone who will listen to me. Thanks again, Pix!

I remember early last year I saw mention of ZBrush3.5 just shortly after 3.12 came out. We are literally in my view getting about $600 worth program for free! ZBrush4 was an truly is made for the Artist.

And even the promo is work of art! now I'm going drool go over Go-Z Part 2
