The topic of this week's zSketch challenge is...
"Anthropomorphic Reptile, Amphibian, or Crustacean "
You're challenge is to display human characteristics with a reptile, amphibian, or crustacean from this list of 10...
1. Frogs
2. Alligators
3. Snakes
4. Toads
5. Crocodiles
6. Salamanders
7. Turtles/ Tortoises
8. Lobsters
9. Crabs
10. Krill
Try to keep them more similar to animals than to humans. Don't lose the animal characteristics while adding the human ones.
You might feel limited by the list of ten but each of these creatures has multiple variations (Look at snakes, there are cobras, vipers, anacondas and tons more...). You literally have hundreds and hundreds of possibilities.
The Deadline For This Topic Is:
Wednesday, June 3rd
Post any work you are doing on the topic and please feel welcome to give constructive criticism to anyone who asks for it.
The images below are images of anthropomorphic creatures in popular culture.

Orkan, Looking good man! Looks like a salamander or lizard, correct? Haha please, excuse me if I'm wrong it's still early in its development.
J.Fernwright, Hell yes! How could I leave out Battletoads?!
Space, Although I had to look them up, I was familiar with them after I saw a picture. Yeah, anything like that is excellent. I actually forgot to put lizards on the list but they are free game also.

okay i can't resist, and to make it worse i'm going to try one of each type, amphibian(Rygel), reptile(Bossk) and crustacean, starting with the last. good old Dr.John, i also made a zmovie (http://s4.photobucket.com/albums/y101/spaceboy412/?action=view¤t=ZBrushMovie-2.flv) to show how it was made, i had to stop because masking stopped working correctly, and then the second movie i was recording was lost in a crash. about 3hrs of work so far. the base is supposed to look like a transporter pad, but it needs more work too. some minor touch up needed iin the eyes and painting, and to make his stethoscope. off to bed.

as i said "perhaps", also 3 of my favorite characters popped in my mind when i saw this challenge.
and if you must know, it was your use of MR once again that had/has put me off, i think these challenges should be about zbrush, and to challenge oneself to do the things we do in other programs here, basemeshs, rendering etc.
i don't mean to offend you, it is my own issue, and one i even had with the official Action Hero contest.

05-22-09, 04:21 PM
spaceboy, did'nt mean to offend you. All my comments were made in jest as you should know by now. I've taken all the Mental Ray stuff off the challenges pages. This was one of the only things lately that was fun.....when it stops being fun.......:(
spaceboy412
05-22-09, 07:00 PM
no pride don't leave, i wasn't offended and didn't mean to offend you, please put your work back up. as i said it is my own thoughts on the issue, there are no certain rules that are listed. you should just do as you want and have fun. its my problem not yours.

05-23-09, 08:48 PM
It's probably better that you both got all of that out of the way.
It's just nice to see so much participation lately and the different techniques are really fun to watch. Hopefully neither of you end up leaving because I have a lot to learn from both of you.
I've narrowed my sculpt down to either crab or lobster...
I should have free time to work on it after tomorrow. I'm exited :).

05-24-09, 01:42 AM
well i feel bad and was not going to say anything. anyway don't know if i'll do more.
look forward to your piece Dribble you need to do more for these challenges, i still think weekly is too short to even get people to notice the thread.
hopefully troy can join in too.
troy1617
05-24-09, 01:57 AM
yeah agreed there's a lot more participation with these then before plus new people are participating each time.. and two weeks for these challenges well give us a bigger time frame to be able to sketch something well at least for me any ways...
yeah im going to try to join in this if i can....;)
Man, maybe I should visit ZBC more often. Challenge #7, and I didn't even know they were going on.
Great to see you posting, Spaceboy. And who doesn't love Zoidberg? Great sculpt, but I would expect nothing less from you.
Can't wait to see what Troy comes up with. June 3 is not too far away, maybe I will come up with one myself.

sloshy sloshy sloshy, was just thinking about you in relation to these. you're like one of the old challenge fathers. hope you join in. glad to see you are still around.
Just had a birthday last week. I think "old" and "father" might sting just a little right now ;)
I have had no interest in doing any art for quite awhile now, but I'm thinking about getting back into it. I've been dabbling with ideas for a few weeks now (ironically, I was thinking about doing some "humanimals", and I also had an idea for a Dr. Seuss Challenge that I was thinking about putting up.) I'm glad to see someone has revived the weekly (or bi-weekly, or monthly) challenges. They were always a lot of fun.
I can't guarantee that I will submit anything. As I said, my interest has been very low these days. It's hard to devote the time to any projects when your attention and time are constantly in demand. But I will try.
Thanks for getting the challenges going again, Dribble. Hahaha, Dribble and Slosh! That's weird. Sounds like another straight tequila night.

Haha no problem! I love doing these challenges, especially now that people are participating!
I'm in the process of moving right now so my time is limited as far as these challenges are concerned but hopefully I'll manage to get this one done. I've got a ton of Ideas rolling around for it.
I might actually need someone to take over for about two weeks with these challenges while I get my place set up and get internet service but I'm not 100% positive on that yet.
Slosh and Dribble, we could be ninja turtles villains.

Ok...first time I have noticed the Weekly Sketch Group threads. I have not been too observant.
Trying to make a Tree Frog/Archer. Not being too patient with the mesh, just gonna force it into place.

Totally agree Spaceboy. Hopefully I will be able to pull some feet out of that. I would have started over on this mesh a while ago, because of the poor mesh, but it has been fun to just go for it.

I can see good basic form in this one, maybe it needs to be refined a little for an upclose shot, but thats the main problem with my models too.
You have to sit on them for ages to get a good uplcose shot of it.

so im to that point where i start putting clothes on but first i thought I would pose him a little more interesting, maybe a bit more in action thinking a spear and maybe some native american type armor would be fun

so i've decided as of late I model things that are all very familiar and based on typical canon. so I'm taking some advice and radically changing the character of my croc

Iron, I really really like what you did with the frog! The colors and posing are perfect. It's got some attitude.
Orkan, The Croc looks like a real pimp. I like the Soulja Boy shades haha. I really enjoy the face you made for him before the glasses and hat though, it's pretty dead on.
Space, I LOVE the "trandoshan" you made. As soon as you posted that i recognized it instantly. Very well done. I'm pretty bummed you didn't make Rygel though. Haha Maybe next time.
Orkanslayer78
06-23-09, 09:13 PM
okay so its not technically all zbrush, but I had to animate the crocodile when I got him done. If any body is interested i have a full turn around on my website and a quick lip sync that can be seen here (http://orkangraphics.com/images/croco-human/Croctalktk1.mov?t=8020)
okay now a back story, the croc was the dance instructor for the Sobe lizards there is more to be animated but in a nutshell he is being interviewed about what it was like to work with the sobe lizards
