The color bump viewer material lets you see the bump that is generated by the Color Bump slider without the texture that is used to generate that bump being visible. Basically, it completely hides the texture that is applied to the model and only displays bump.

For more info about the Color Bump modifier, please read the Materials chapter of the manual.

Under normal circumstances, a single model can have only one material. There are two ways to change this:

1) Through vertex painting. You need to have M or MRGB selected in the Draw palette and then press Color>Fill Object. The object will be filled with the current material and/or color depending on your Draw palette settings. You can then select other materials and/or colors and paint them onto the model on a per-polygon basis.

2) Through TextureMaster. This lets you ignore the polygons and paint what you want where you want it. TextureMaster contains a tutorial which explains exactly how to do this.
