Thanks guys :D
Got him baked down to game resolution, at about 9980 tris. Been toying with colours, though I think I may be working a little too dark. No spec or anything, just playing with colour scheme.

Nice man, diggin the details and scheme :tu:

This is dyno-mite! The only suggestion I have is to work on the spec map a bit more and add more variance. He's looking a little too shinny right now. Excellent model though.

GavinG really cool design, so fresh and unique! Could you show a UVs maps?
beautiful work man!
personnaly i'm not fan of the brown color... regarding your character i would have chosen a warmer color (red or dark purple maybe)...it should be more efficient with the touches of green that you've add!
But it's just my opinion!!
keep going!!

Very, very nice.
I'm curious though. Why are so many people putting glowing bits on their characters these days? Is that something that games recently started supporting? Don't get me wrong, I think you used it well and it adds interest, I'm just curious why I see so much of it all of the sudden in people's designs. What is it, a separate "glow map" or something that the engine reads?
db
Dman3d: Thanks :D
JesseGraffam: Thanks dude. Yeah, right now it's just using a global spec value, i'll be sure to give it more love once the materials are nailed down :)
CapAmerica: Thanks! Yup, I will with my next art update
YONA: Thanks! It's kind of tricky as I need to stick within a certain colour scheme that represents my forum (green / black) but I think I can push it more. I think at the very least pushing the brightness of the metals and breaking the spandexy material from the metals more will help a lot
dustinbrown: Thanks. Hehe, I'm not sure what to say on the glowy bits. For DW entries, I guess it's because we're given a fairly obscure genre / timeline...hints of fantasy and scifi stuff..so to show that one thing isn't necessarily "fantasy", a lot of people bring in some techy bits...and techy bits breed glowing parts:P And I guess, yeah, with the new technology we're able to use glow / emissive maps unlike before...as far as I know, my working experience with UT2K4 and below is pretty limited...but I think with the dynamic lighting in engines these days, a lot of people just like th eidea of seeing the glowy parts of the character as he walks through dark areas.
Little update, went further with texturing the metals, basically everything else is just blocked in. The image below ha s a little paint over work from JFletcher over at PC...but it's the rough direction I'm heading in

W-A-W.... Really Great man!
That would be very appreciated if you could post high detailed renders to appreciate the details...
Superb job and design...
I wonder if you would need a bit of ambiant occlusion on the low res model to exgerate the volumes maybe?

Great work but if I may offer a little critique:
I think the feet are a little bit too small for this heavy guy. Other than that really good work! Scads of details. I especially like the smileys. Sharp contrast to the skulls. :D

This is looking really sweet. Seems like Polycount is ahead this year ;)
Loving those bronzes on his arm.

this is looking really nice man
detail is well done
and the texturing is looking good
keep going

Amazing sculpt GavinG!
Love all the details! :D:tu:
Hey hey, thanks guys!
Sebcesoir: I'll try to get a bigger image up for you, right now I'm just grabbing them from Max's viewport. The AO might not be a bad idea, right now I've got a layer in there multipled over my diffuse...but I might pump it up some more, just don't want to kill the normal map's effect :)
Moni-Poroni: Thanks man, I'm still planning on trying that out (a few people have suggested increasing their size for a better base) They are intentionally smaller than normal, but maybe too small?
~mindrot~: Thanks dude, big fan of your work!
Kupo, skulll_monster, Mind Symbion : Thanks!
Just another texture update. Tweaks overall and trying out some fx on his magic parts...the problem is that they're only good from a certain angle, I don't have enough tris to give it much volume...righ tnow the character is at 10k on the nose, which is the comp's budget :S

Looking fantastic! Great texture work. Could you attach your wireframe? I'd love to see it.

wow this is looking super awesome mate!
I do agree though that being so top heavy with the Armour and massive weapon the feet do feel a tad small...
JesseGraffam
05-02-09, 11:11 PM
although the modeling and texturing is A+ work. I think the feet are way too small. In normal circumstances this guy would topple over. The legs could not support a massive body and 200lbs of armor. The most successful characters are believable ones that abide by the laws of physics on planet Earth. Great job so far, but I think that one thing can make this a winner.

This is a really cool character.. and really great job with the details!! from a design standpoint though, he seems a bit off-balance and top-heavy
Mikaty: Thanks! Here's a wireframe shot: http://www.gavimage.com/DW4/cleric_wip_22c.jpg
feder!co, Jesse, eldee: Thanks guys, I'll look into changing the feet up :)
Been playing around in the Marmoset engine and I believe I will be using this as my final rendering solution. Just need to pose Bishop and build a fairly simple base. :)
I feel like I am entering "polish" mode...so for the next week I will most likely be touching up problem areas and experimenting with different ideas (such as increase the foot size)

hey gavin!
awesome character. i frequently been lurking around your thread over at pc.
this surely is one of my favorites (-i believe polycount is gonna run with the biggie again).
he just gets cooler and cooler everytime i check in.
small suggestion. maybe tone down the brown leather or maybe all the brown, to fit the color-theme of polycount. you had it in the picture in post #4.
just a thought.
good luck man. i'll be cheering. heheh

BoneCandy: Thanks!
rasmus: Cheers man, darkened up his jumpsuit a bit :)
Food: Thanks!
gpepper: Thanks!
After finding out about the extension, I took a few nights catch on some sleep (first night with +5 hours sleep in 3 weeks!) A few tweaks here and there, added some dirt to some areas, added more obvious green weathering to the metals, played with different lighting (focusing some attention to the above feedback) and also trying out a pose. The pose isn't really too much, I did it in transpose...I'm happy with the way it is, but I'm kind of bummed that I'm realizing I can't do much more with him in that regard (because of things that are baked down, design choices that are biting me just now, etc.)
I still need to make a base, though I don't think I'll be going to crazy with it...most likely just a fancy stone pedestal of sorts. Any thoughts on if bullet casings would be allowed on the base? Technically, they could be picked up...but they're not more useful than a rock..
Mostly just playing with different settings in Marmo...still not settled on anything

great job ! love everything ! the design , model , texture ...simply amazing :tu:
i also like the hole you did in his left hand ...remind me Ced characters
best of luck ! and keep posting here ;)
Thanks everyone!
Alright, I'm calling this one done. There's a few areas I know could use improvement, like the pose, but I really need to get cracking on other projects that have been put on the back burner...plus, I'm starting to see this guy in my cereal.
Unless something is OBVIOUSLY wrong and would break a rule or something, I'm going to submit some time tomorrow. After a few weeks away from him, I may do some different renders just for fun as I'm really happy with how he turned out and would have liked to show different angles and stuff.
Hunger: I'm planning on creating a tutorial about him and will include those shots later on, I'll be sure to keep the forums posted :)

Just wanted to pass this tutorial along. I made it while creating bishop, with the intention that it would make my older tutorials more or less obsolete. Though I don't really plan on changing anything, I would be happy to answer any questions...Let me know what you think!
