Hey ZBC, was including this in another thread, Aurick suggested I start a new DW thread in the correct section, so here it is. I'm making a Demon Lord, death association. He'll be the Lord of Parasites, so there'll be all kinds of disgustingness on him if all goes well. Please feel free to mercilessly tear these concepts apart, i'm giving myself a week of design before starting the 3d build! I'm fighting with gameartisans.org, this is my first Dominance War, so I'm pretty excited.

Departed a little bit in the design phase, for a while he was becoming like a female lich-type thing, but i've since (after some good advice from lots of people) gone back to earlier stages and developed that. Stay tuned, I hope to have a newer veresion later tonight.

Awesome concepts. Did you make those in Alchemy? I tried to use it today but I have no idea how to use it properly lol

I don't know what Alchemy is

I painted them in photoshop, and collage in some photo reference! :D

Here's some updates!
I think I'm getting somewhere....I was liking the idea of him having his back legs, but instead of being useless and dragging along, they will just be kind of sideways, like someone twisted his legs into cricket-style legs! So, his movement will be a combination of the mass of tentacles moving and his legs pushing. I imagine he could also use them to jump, per his association with the lowly flea!

Not sure if the hands will stay as the 3-fingered nubbly thing it is, or be more like flea claws. At this point I'm making sure I start thinking about polycount...all these protruding limbs and stuff could add up fairly quickly.
Starting to feel pretty confident in this guy http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/images/smilies/inocent.gif

Great concept, judging from your previous models this should be a great model. I was wondering if you happened to know of a tutorial which covers the process you used to create your concept art.

Here's some concept updates. Not sure if it's getting better, or just different.

wdcstudios: I can't think of a tutorial off the top of my head, my process is kind of a mash up of a lot of techniques. Mostly, I'll rough in some forms, grab a ton of reference pictures and overlay/multiply or whatever them on top in Photoshop, then go back to painting, and using color dodge and multiply brushes to punch in lights and darks. Once a base is established, I play with the silhouette using transforms, like the warp or liquefy tool. Sometimes ill start with silhouettes too. For this guy I started with some photo collage, cause I had no idea what I was going to do other than 'Demon Lord'. I'll try to throw together a quick process tut for you when I get a moment to breathe! :D

Hi JakeLV426! Awesome sketches man, looks like kit-bashing, but in 2D. :tu: so cool. Lookin' forward to the sculpt!

Hey Jake what happened to going as a male?? I am not sure if the female placed there fits with the overall nasty parasitic design or is she now a demon princess?? Looking forward to updates

Etcher - I like that...2d Kitbashing....I believe you've coined a phrase for my process! Lol

GregStrangis - The female thing just kind of happened during my playing around. I was trying to make things fit, and since the theme is parasitic, it made sense to have one thing controlling another. I'm just rolling with it, and I was digging the woman. Not sure about how to really incorporate her human arms yet though, I want to be careful how many human parts this thing has.

I'm honestly not really crazy about any of these. Any thoughts?

Hi JakeLV426! Could be that the forms of the hats are not agressive enough - too elegant and feminine. Can't offer an alternative though... , maybe some shapes that are sharper, spikier or more insect-like, some parts connected to her head/neck. Lookin' forward to the updates! :tu: !

(btw Chris Perna and his team on GOW used the term "kit-bashing" to describe the proces of creating a new character mesh by dissecting and combining old ones)

Jake how about a weedy look, branch like objects shooting out like and Indian head piece... something more evil and scary....

Maybe a longer version of something like this. With a darker more Gothic style.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions everyone! Here's an update, i've gone to putting down lineart. It felt like time to really define some things, and tone down a bit of the messiness of my design stage!

Still need to work out back legs.

Looking good but personally I would lose the lower legs. They just appear stuck on rather than part of the creature. I'd either just leave it as a mystery under the cloth or ermm not sure, possibly a larger abdomem type body to support the weight of the torso.

It may just be that the human legs just don't work due to the proportions.

but interesting seeing the development. keep it going.

yeah, lose the lower legs, they dont look good ;] Also be carfull with so many aditional limbs and spikes, the polylimit isnt that high, and you end up making some things totaly square ;]

Once again -- fantastic sketches! :tu:
Looks VERY promising!
Best of luck for this challenge !

Oh my....

Amazing work on the concepts! You have real flair! I love the idea, very dark indeed - even these early sketches have a very ominous feel. I cannot wait to see more.

As for the lower legs, I see the other guys concerns. May I suggest having them integrate into the lower body somehow without jutting out and looking as obvious? Maybe they would be better as a subtle part of the surface details, so that you could miss them but on closer inspection you realize they are there - that would be creepy!

Anyway, fantastic stuff, keep it going

PS. I'm entering too via 3D Total - who's your team?

Thank you guys for all your input and good advice! It really helps the design phase with such encouragement! I've done some more iterations, some breaking and twisting etc. I think some of the problems are slowly moving towards solutions, we'll see what happens! It dawned on my she needed a weapon for DW as well, and i'd been neglecting that too long.

Here we go:

You have a great idea for a demon! I like the more fleshed out designs you did in post 7. Although the newer ones are great too, the concepts in post 7 seem very strong and revolting which I take is what your going after. Nevertheless, this is a great idea and great work.

Hey everyone! Sorry for the slackness, Saturday night turned out to be an all nighter, so Sunday I more or less passed out on the couch after 2 airplane bottles of Jack Daniels around 4:00p. http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/images/smilies/mugs.gif

Made some changes...I think I can get away with a centipede like body...it will save a ton of texture space if I can repeat one segment and just scale it down a little each time. The little legs can be as low as 6 tris each, in a little pyramid, and will contribute to the rigging nightmare I'm sure she'll already be for me. Added a hoodlike structure behind her head, to continue pushing the idea her human side can be retracted safely behind bug parts. She is after all a boss monster...must be able to protect that one weak spot....

Decreased some of the angle of her posture...the huge forward motion was a little off, and she's more of a stalker than a striker, per her parasitic nature.

I'm already a day behind my scheduled concepting time, so based on te reaction to this latest one, i'll decide whether or not to clean it up more, or just start modeling and work out any remaining issues in 3d.

Hey Jake, I am not sure if I like this version compared to your older version of her where she had the legs coming out of the dress. Don't rush the design you still got plenty of time =) 7weeks!! I myself need to model another full character as well during this contest.. safe to say I am a little worried

Thanks Greg...I definitely was jumping around a bit too much. A lot of feedback pointed towards bringing the dress back, heres the latest version:

Hi Jake! Again, great sketches! I'm holding back on commenting cause I'm not familiar with DW and it's characters (don't know to what they should comply to). But I'm having a blast watching you develop your character! :tu: ! So, I can only give encouragement!
