Having been here a long time, it occurred to me that one of the most common things I see newbies express on posts is something along the lines of, 'I'll never be that good...'.

Well, I have been here a long time, but only since July of 2001, and I thought to myself, 'Hey...Why not post one of your first Z-Thingies, so people can see what you did at first?'
Since my personal opinion is that my work has improved greatly since then, I post this in the hopes that everybody new will realize that the learning curve exists, but that you will eventually be pulling things out of your head, and converting them to what you want...Time will take care of it...This image should illustrate that we all start at the same place.

Or as one of my favorite philosophical theatrical groups the 'Firesign Theater' put it so eloquently:
We're all Bozos on this bus...! ;)

You will notice that I didn't even have the Antialiasing down... :D

hey SC, great idea for a thread...everyone should dig out their oldest work and post it...no matter how tragic....(cept these doodads you posted are pretty kewl) :tu: :tu: what do you think SC?

Here's my first ZBrush image (done with ZBrush Demo version 1.03 on a Pentium 90 with 16 megs of RAM :)):

http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1006829889gzf.jpg

Although, I remember the very first thing I did when I opened up the ZBrush demo for the first time, I drew a little squiggle with the Simple Brush and said to myself, "Oooooooooooooo!" :)

Well Ron, I don't know...I think there was a similar thread, but I think it might be a good idea to repeat the idea anyway...
After all, the only reason I, and anyone else on this Forum, has made progress is that this place is filled with sharing, positive, and helpful people. If I were to start listing all the people that helped me learn incredible things here, it would start to sound like an Oscar speech...(And since the Oscars repell me totally, I would rather drill, tap, and thread the forepart of my skull than sound like that! ;) )
But I do like the idea so people can see we all started with baby steps...And I should add that that is why I feel compelled to help out anyone here who asks!

well I cant find my first one...found some very old ones though..most of my early stuff involved using another program with Z....the yellow skull all Z...the underwater scene (snicker..thought I was getting good then...lol)used fish models from micrografx simply 3d3 and the foreground grass psp7, and the rest in z, and the very dark one was zbrush cept for the 3d3 dragonfly and the psp water..and the little red dragon was all Z...I like my oldies..but I like my stuff now better... :) and I couldnt begin to list all the ppl that have helped me along the way..the forum has been more than kind and giving with regards to the little progressions that I have made....and i have only been on the forum since December of 2001...NEXT.......... ;) :D ;) :D ;) http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1019164822hqb.jpg

Hey stonecutter I'm going to stick this in here-it is kind of directed at Gerlon since on one of my last image posts he made a statement similar to what you're are referring to about"never being able to do that"(I had this all typed out to post last night but the wind blew the power out and I didn't feel like doing it again)Maybe someone else will find this useful.I will try to find on of my earliest pieces of K-rap
to post here also.Even though this thread has been run before it is a good on.
When I first started with ZBrush my models looked like K-rap,but I stuck with it, which isn't hard to -do ZBrush is way to much fun and every once in awhile now I get a good one.I do not plan out any of my images
they just don't turn out right when I do.I just sit down and start playing with shapes colors and textures-I use Quasz,Xeno Dreams,
PhotoPaint and Mojo world to create textures
which I import into ZBrush and use as alpha
brushes, masks(& textures)I MRGBZ lots of stuff right off the ZBrush screen to fiddle with. Also lots of things happen by accident-
I might get a strange texture on a head because I didn't turn texture off.Using masks
(tools/modify/selection/hue-intensity-alpha)
and then inflating or deflating or anyone of the various deforms is always fun for me and yields unexpected results.Just play with everything in the ZBrush interface. You'll get there.

Well Im still trying to master ZBrush, but heres a few of my earliest images. I made these before I knew how to texture, so I would just drop the image onto the canvas and then paint it using the simplebrush with 0 depth

Thanx for the comments, RHOM...I was hoping some long-timers would get into this, and I really admire your work...
Gerlon, I think those ones you did earlier are fine pieces, and as for TM, I've only used it twice...It's not that I don't like it, it's that I'm a painter, and would just as soon place components and paint them in place... :)
Ron, I think that skull is an excellent painting... :tu:
And you, W/O...Who would guess that out of these early efforts would come the Maestro Of Z-Anime? :tu:

Nova, LWTB, Filament...Take a moment to look at the pieces you posted, and more recent work...What you see, and the amazing progress you've made is the result of SYNERGY
A self-reinforcing action...That's what we have here, and we all can grow together...That is a magical and creative wonderland, and the door is opened here, each for the other...

My very first 3Dsphere screwed up with the sliders. And then I applied the jellybean texture (I think). I "embedded" them in a sea of 3D painted GOO similar in color.

Ooooooo yeah, I knew what I was doing back then. ;)

New owners are luckier than us old timers. We didn't have them thar fancy Zscripts. Damn kids, you'all don't know what a DAYS work IS!>?! Wit them dang fancygetuped ZScripts an such. ;)

What an awesome idea for a thread. I havn't been here that long, so im sure most of you have seen my first post. I don't even think I have it on this hard drive anymore. I might have to rummage through my other hard drive and see if I can dig it up.

I'm one of those who say my talent will never measure up. It's not a self pity thing, I'm just realistic. I find the pro's here all have talent outside of the computer. Be it sculpting or painting what ever. They are just expanding their medium. Unfortantly I was born with tons of imagination with no ability to get it out... at least artisticly. That's why I now write, but I do love playing with art. Every once in awhile I "get lucky" ~G~. I've learned to accept that. What I find with Zbrush is that even though I delete just about everything I do, it has to be the most relaxing program to play with. Pushing colors around, sculpting clay into nothing ~G~ It's all soothing for some reason.

I've never posted a model, but did keep a couple of the first few. This is one of them.
