Working on this one for the Halloween gallery. I like how it is coming out, but wanted to get some feedback and input on this one. Clouds- -does anyone have a good method for clouds? Worked and worked on that, but still feel it needs work. Trees need texturing and such, but wanted to share what I've got so far.

"sky practice" .. from DeeVee see Below this forum.
Looking good at this stage, the gnarled trees are great as is the fibre grass.
To draw clouds I usually fill a blank layer with a base colour and alpha 4 and build up the clouds by roughing out with a big brush size.
I add detail by progressively reducing the brush size and lightening the colour.

Hope this helps a bit. :)

good tutorial Mik :tu:
P.S.: i think the high contrast on the trees gives it a very natural look - dont overgo on the treetextures ;)

Thanks for all of the great tips. I had a quick thought this morning, so I had to try it. I have been messing with the fog channel and came up with some decent results (see image). We'll have to see which direction I go. Thanks again! :D

Yesterday was a great cloud/sunset/moonrise day in Dallas, Texas. At about 6:10,with the sun still above the horizon, the moon was a big oval bird egg in the sky, with bright whites in stark contrast to the grays of the moon's mares and the bright blue of the sky. It was peeping out between cottony bits of clouds layered accross most of the sky. The sinking sun began to turn everything a solid pink while the sky remained a light blue background. To the east, there was a haze over Dallas that started out true pink and eventually turned to a purple haze, just like I imagine in Jimmie Hendrix's song. It was just like using fog in the background in ZBrush, where things in the middle background were in a pink haze, which solidified to an impenetrable pink fog in the far background. You wouldn't believe it if you saw it in a painting. To the north a solid mass of clouds looked more like a tall solid purple wall of mountains, with the classic cumulus domes glowing a true pink along the top edge of the purple wall. The bits of cottony clouds layered over most of the sky were well defined on the western edges with lots of detail, white at first, then pink as the sun set. But the main bodies of these mini-clouds were ill-defined smudges of smokey blue fading to dark gray on the eastern sides, while the background of the sky still remained a soft light blue.
Later in the evening, the bits of clouds had closed ranks a bit, so that the moon was hidden, but it's light leaked through the cracks between each thicker bit of cloud, so that you had glowing white holes and cracks in a smokey gray sky. To the east, the lights of the city highlighted the undersides of the clumpy cloud layer with an orangish glow.
That sky is exactly the kind of sky I imagine would be present the night I ran into ghosts down at the cemetery.

Thanks for all of the responses! Here is an update. I am trying to decide if I like the ghosts with eyes, and if I like the musical notes. Just not sure! Anyway, enjoy, and let me know what you think. Thanks, Dave

wonderful scene and characters , but the render still has a lot of jaggies ?
my 2 cents : the ghosts edges are bit too visible (maybe because of the render settings you used) ,maybe you could blur out the edges a bit.

These jaggies are killing me! I am rendering, and then turning off flatten layers in the render setting to get the transparency. Anyone have any ideas? Could be the material? Perhaps the mesh, but I wouldn't think that. Anyway, I really don't like the eyes either, so I will probably change that. Music notes, still unsure about that. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave

I have troubles with jaggies too when working with transparancy and Flatten layers off.
My suggestion would be to render it with the jaggies , export it as a psd file , clear your layers , take the first layer , import the image (you exported a minute ago) as a texture. Click on Fill Layer to fill canvas with the picture.
Select the Blur tool and use a very small drw size to blur out the edges.
Also mess around with the smudge tool to give them ghostly tails ;)

Love the image Dave. Great atmosphere. :tu:
Those jaggies can be removed with the anti-aliasng in the render modefiers. Either color adj or depth adj must be on in therender palette and using best render. I can't remember which it is. I think it is color adj. This should help all edges. It will soften thegrass too. As for the music notes, are they made with 2.5d brushes? I think it will look better if they were modeled (Zsphere) and not drawn...but that is just based on assuming they were drawn and not modeled. LOL *blush* IMHO, it all looks great. The notes are the only thing that catches my eye.

I like the mood of this picture a lot. :tu: :tu:
I'd definitely lose the musical notes, they don't add anything but clutter: it's already delightfully clear the ghosties are dancing and singing. Less certain about the eyes, but on balance I think I'd probably lose them too. But like I said - good job. :tu:
EDITED: Or on reflection having looked at it again, if you feel kind of wedded to the musical notes, I think they might work better if you lost the outer ones (2 left, 1 right). They seem to upset the balance of the composition a bit. Maybe they would work better if restricted just to that main group above the trio, so that it pulls the central grouping together, rather than leading the eye off to the edges of the picture.

Final image on this one. Quite a bit was changed, added or subtracted. I am finally happy with this one. I think it turned out ok, and I hope everyone likes it. I changed the ghost settings, added leaves, changed the sky, added the bats and lost the musical notes and the eyes. Musical notes and eyes were just not quite right with me.I also added the default Pixologic pumpkin for the spirit of things. Why model one when there is a perfectly good one already done?! Thanks Pix! Anyway, if you have any questions concerning any bit of this please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks again for all of the tips and suggestions! Enjoy! Happy Halloween! :D :D http://www2.zbrushcentral.com/zbc_uploads/user_image-1035123182hre.jpg

Yahroon,
I know in 1.23, even the demo, you can just turn down the ZIntensity on your object.

The lower the number there, the more transpearent the object is. :tu:
I didn't think I ever missed any posts, but apparently this one slipped by me. How wonderful! The final really kicks butt. I love the addition of the bats. I think the musical notes would have been fine to leave in, but just as effective without. Really nice work. :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu: :tu:
