Hello everyone :)
I decided to open a single thread for all my WIP projects I'll be working on from now on :)
Here's my latest work, a still image entry for CGTalk's Steampunk Myths and Legends challenge.
The story behind the concept I chose lies like this.
According to the ancient Greek Mythology, Kerberos was the gigantic three headed dog which guarded the gates of Hades.
He was posted to prevent ghosts of the dead from leaving the underworld.
I wanted to make a steampunk version of Kerberos, depicted as a hybrid monster, partially organic and partially mechanical, armed with an armour and a flame thrower weapon, which guarded a steampunk palace of the dead into the underworld.
I did the initial modeling and some particle rendering in Softimage XSI, while heavy modifications, sculpting and rendering in passes was done in ZBrush. Final compositing was done in Photoshop.
I had some hard time to finish it on time but had enormous fun doing this and learned alot of new things..
I hope you like it :)

Hi,
I'll be working on an airship concept, meant for a single person (pilot).
Softimage and ZBrush work for now, I'd like to make a 3d print out of it :)

Hi again..
After having read Vitaly Bulgarov's great tutorial on illustration using ZBrush and Photoshop, http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=074301 - Thank you Vitaly for your inspiring work! - I thought of reworking on Kerberos old model of mine.
It was really fun and educational process.. Actually I still can see quite a few spots to change/refine, but lets call it finished. Hope you like it :)

Some time ago I decided to print an old model of mine, the Hoplites warrior,
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=54355&highlight=call+arms
Today I received the 3d print, made by ProtoDemon, www.protodemon.com (http://www.protodemon.com).
I should say that the quality of the service as much as the quality of the actual print is truly remarkable. The photos I got do not justify the detailing of the print.Thank you so much guys for the great work :)

Hey Stephen, thank you very much my friend! Your work and progress keep being an inspiration for me ;)
The images are Photoshop compositings of multiple ZBrush renders;
other renders done for diffuse, others for masks, others for speculars and shadows and such and such.. Soft was used for the base model+uv map
and also for the jewel.
dustinbrown - thanks alot! I can already see lots of mistakes and points for fixing, hope that next one will be a decent one ;)

That's my first full color 3d print, done here in Athens, by 3DPS facilities,
http://3dps.net/ , with a ZPrinter 450. The texture colors of the bust were modified a bit, for the 3dprint. I will possibly use some varnish later on the model to grasp the speculars.
Many thanks to Phaedra and Panagiotis, the heads of 3DPS, for their great support :)

Dang that is a really sweet sculpt and awesome print.
But how did you make that background on that final image?
Al.Tintop
02-09-10, 05:41 PM
the sculpt is really great but it's kinda sad that the quality of the print isn't that good. how much did you pay for this? did you already check out the ownage.com prints? they are unbeatable.every print is a masterpiece of art. but i guess you got your print for a cheap price. in my opinion, pay more get more. but as i said the sculpt is great.
Aumakua
02-10-10, 12:07 AM
Kenshiro, manzarek123 - thank you :)
Stephen, glad you like it :) I bet you're going to make some prints pretty soon ;)
hockey14 - thank you :) the background is just a few layers in Photoshop.
AI. Tintop - Thank you :) Well, as for the quality, I guess it's a matter of printer's technology. I also printed with other printer models,
like the blue demon (at Growit 3d facilities) and the hoplites character (at Protodemon) (both in a photo on page 2)
and they all look different regarding to the surface quality and type.
I do know Ownage, they make great prints, I just prefer to print my own textures and colors rather than have an artist paint on my model..at least for now.
The cost for the busts was 350 euros total. The price was similar to the money I paid to the other two companies for the demon and the warrior
(without the risk to break the model cause of the delivery - I went myself to 3DPS to see the printer in action and receive the prints :) )

You are right it definitly starts with printers technology and i saw your print
from protodemon it looks really nice. and i understand your opinion of
getting the texture right with the print. but i would prefer a more detailed
and 'lovely' handmade texture, because the artist who colors it colors it like
you did in your production process and i think they are able to do it like
your original texture. but i think there are many different opinions to this
and as i see you try out different printer and stuff to get a better overall
knowledge maybe?! i think thats the right way.
by the way, the post with new angles, i prefer the last one. blue looks
great.
keep it up.:tu:
Aumakua
02-15-10, 11:23 AM
Yes, you're absolutely right, still it is not possible for any machine to match the quality of work of an artist painter, the technology evolves quite rapidly though :) I wish I was able to paint my own models properly, in case I need this I will definitely have a look at a facility like Ownage and such.

Thank you Zak_Keen :) in a couple of days there will be a makeof I wrote about Aquaman, on 3D Total. As for the 3d print, the colours are much more saturated than those on the render, possibly that's the reason for that look :)

Hi again..
A rework on my submission to CGSculpt.org's Battle Boss Challenge.
The aim of the challenge was to sculpt a 3dprint - ready Battle Boss character. Only sculpt was needed, no textures or UVs.
My initial concept idea lies like this..
Hidden into the misty, murky shores of the Big Lake, between the moldy folliage and the rotten carcasses of his unfortunate victims, he is lurking waiting in his muddy pit hole for the next unsuspected living creature, mostly fishermen of the Lake.
Once a human who lost a bet with Evil, now a beastie shadow, the uncanny critter uses sharpened bones from previous kills to disembowel his prey, eats their hot guts from the still breathing torsos and makes clothes out of their skin to dress with.
Then, he rips the bones off the flesh and uses the strongest of them to make new hunting weapons;spears, knives, pikes... and hiding again in the oozing mud to play his horriffic hide and seek game with the next boatman.
The WIP thread of the challenge is there

The small yellow model (the main block from a R/C engine) was built back in 1993 in a company here in Athens (not active any more).
The warlord was built in Protodemon. The demon was built in Growit3d. The small bust and the other behind it (with the black base) were built in another company in Athens, www.3dps.net (http://www.3dps.net).
The medium bust was built in Offload Studios. And the robot on top of the rocket was built again in Offload Studios.

You're welcome EZRA52 :)
I have been trying to get your Mech brushes since you presented them and still have not been able to download them. Please, don't get me wrong Aumakua, I'm not blaming you for anything but Rapidshare has got to be one of the worst file hosting sites there is. Just google "Rapidshare sucks" and see what I mean. I have a good internet connection and never have problems downloading but when I try to download from Rapidshare, the download is always extremely slow, then gets interrupted and resume is not supported. I've tried about 20 times already with no success. Maybe it's just the location I'm in, but that shouldn't matter.
If anyone could upload these to another host like Mediafire (http://www.mediafire.com/), I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I'm really sorry to hear you had problem getting the files, zber2, and everyone else.
I did not supply links from my own website cause I cannot afford the download bulk yet.
So, I just added Mediafire links to make things easier :)

Hey, thanks Noisy Knuckles, for sharing the alphas and the brushes, and showing off your workflow. It's also terrific seeing that lineup of prints from different companies using different technologies.
Have you been recasting your pieces in resin before painting them? I'm only asking because I've found the raw output to be a little fragile, and not really engineered or intended for long term display.
Aumakua
07-06-12, 10:59 AM
Wetterschneider, thanks! the 3d prints are indeed very fragile. The thing is, my intention was to experiment with different 3d print technologies and not produce pieces for massive production. That's why I printed single meshes, at least in most of the cases, instead of multi parts assemblies that are more appropriate for casting and such.
Also, I did not paint the colored prints by hand, it was the 3d printer model that printed the texture on the actual print, (well, except from the toon robot, which was painted by an artist at Offload Studios).

Long time no write :D hello people!
This is my submission for CGFeedback***8217;s Mini Challenge 11 titled ***8220;Microscopic Life***8221;.
The theme was microscopic life forms, it could be dust mites , real bugs or imaginary ones, parasites etc.
So, I decided to make an imaginary dustmite fooling around on a nanomachine installation, using some
of the great free brushes made by Michael Dunnam.
