Action Hero entry by Ralph Roberts

Some say it was a miracle, others say it was a freak accident, nevertheless, it happened shortly after her ninth round of intense surgery.

Joconde Engel’s brain and spine were sugar-coated with a rare, devastating cancer, Chordoma, and this was just another bout in her seven year war fighting this disease. Already the cancer had taken parts of Joie’s body and life. Her face, head, and neck were heavily scarred and permantly deformed from previous operations and after enduring numerous rounds of proton radiation. Multiple amounts of reconstructive surgery cluttered her insides with titanium hardware. Complications stole her ability to speak along with her deep-rooted desire to be a mother one day. Nothing was the same and perhaps the most important factor is that she faced her mortality more than anyone should ever have to.

Doctors expected that number nine was going to be another routine, but ruthless game of cat-and-mouse surgery. When they were in the ninth hour removing the golf-ball sized tumor form her cerebellum, a translucent tentacle reached through the base of Joie’s skull and snatched what was left of the lump. They then stood back and watched while other small nodules were being stolen from other parts of her brain by these mystical feelers. Suddenly, Joie was in trouble and needed to be closed up immediately.
Later in the recovery Room, Joie awoke with enlightened eyes. She motioned to the nurse to hand her a pad of paper. She then wrote of a dream she had where she sat with an angel. She was told that she was given a gift-one that she and others stricken with her disease would benefit from. With that, she layed back and fell into a coma. Suddenly Joie was radiating intense heat form her abdomen. The nurse watched as Joie’s abdomen burned away exposing a glowing orb. Although two thirds of her belly was now missing, amazingly Joie was stable.

Joie’s doctors discovered that somehow and in someway, proton energy had manifested inside Joie’s core--specifically her uterus--and was feeding off the tumors in her brain and spine. Unfortunatly it was also discovered that her disease too was advancing and continuing to riddle her with tumors. The energy trapped in her core was actually digesting the cancer and keeping it relatively under control. What was even more incredible was that the six-year-old girl in the bed next to Joie was no longer in jeopardy, her brain cancer was now completely suppressed.

Other cancer patients that were wheeled into Joie’s room were also mysteriously getting better. Doctors were baffled. Could the proton orb that was keeping Joie’s cancer under control also be curing others? Doctors gathered several patients and witnessed each being cured by the energy residing in Joconde’s abdomen.

Joie’s health began to deteriorate. Her gift to the world was not able to keep up with her own disease. A decision was made to isolate Joie and see if she would regain her strength.

After several months in ICU, Joie was now awake, out of danger and now out of the hospital. She is completely aware of her amazing gift and continues to spend time curing those suffering from cancer.

One called her “Core Domina” and soon many patients spoke of beautiful dreams they had of Joie dressed in angelic armor calling herself Core Domina as she slayed their cancer with her twin swords. One summed it up by saying “ In the realm of rare cancers it's more rare still when the disease strikes someone uniquely equipped to fight it.”

This story made me cry... its so... inspiring; Cancer is one of the things i'm most afraid of in life, it would be nice if there was really a Core Domina in the real life.

Happy Zbrushing and I'll watch closeley this thread.

Thanks for the kind words. There is a lot of amazing entries! This contest is really going to be fun to watch and participate in. Here is a base mesh shot. I use both Ryan's and Meats' edge loop techniques to build off the zsphere mesh.

This is a very original concept and you've come with a full blown illustration that I find very interesting indeed, it reminds me of William Blake and his angels actually.
Your perfect start with the Zspheres could be the beginning of great things. Best of luck.

Hi TheProcreator,

I am a beginner and not familiar with these. Can you show an example of what you mean. btw,Your model looks good.

thanks,
Paul

I made a quick movie on how i extruded the fingers. Just a few things to know...
First, If you are using 3.12 append a "hidden" subtool so that you can access the "edge loop" button. Second, Activate point select under the transform menu. Third, make sure you are in the lowest subdivision of your model. This should make things go smoothly.

To do this method, you want to get your polys facing directly x, y, or z. That way when you use the offset deformation, the poly moves in-line with your selected poly.

The movie shows me using the transform tool along with the alt key. I really use the alt and rotate the mesh outside the transform chain quite a bit. I get the hand polys facing close to direct xyz. I then select the poly I want to extrude. I take a snapshot so I can see how far the poly moves using the offset button. Then using offset in the z direction I move it out a bit to create the first knuckle. Once it is where I like it i hit "edge loop." Holding the shift and control key I hide the new loop. I then use the offset with a larger distance to create the finger bone. If it's good I hide that loop and do a small distance for another knuckle. I repeat this until I have all the knuckles and finger bones accounted for.

I show a different combo, then I go back and closely repeat the numerical distances to match the first finger. Do this for all fingers then you can take the transpose tool and mask off each ginger and rotate/move them into the position you like.

Ryan Kingsilan made a great video on building zsphere hands. One technique involved selecting a polygon, making an edge loop, masking the new poly, revealing the mesh, invert the selection then use the transpose tool to move that poly to where you want it. This is a way of beveling.

Meats Meier uses a slightly different approach. He first isolates a poly or several polys, takes a snapshot(this is so you can see how far the poly moves in space), uses inflate under deformation then hits "edge loop". This does an extrude and enlarges the new poly face.

I use both of these to modify my mesh along with the offset technique. There should be more info here on ZBC about these and other edge loop techniques.

Hope this helps!

From the front she seems to be missing that voluptuous womanly figure your concept has. Sort of just straight up and down. I think she could benefit from going down a couple subdivisions and giving her some more form. Women are always tough though. You are progressing nicely.

Looking nice so far..I think she's a bit on a skinny side.....I'd love to see more seductive style like your sketch.....But overall, good progress, I'll be keeping an eye on this heroine. :)

Here I have started to layout the anatomy. When doing figurative work, I really enjoy working out the musculature. It really helps me to see the proper proportions and the fluidity of the surface. If I can get through this stage before the weekend, I should be in good shape.

If you can pick up Ryan Kingslien's intro to ZB3. It has some really great tips! anatomy.jpg

The hair has a very botticelli feel to it. I'm digging it.

She still looks a bit... mannish in the face but still a great sculpt.

In that shot, there are essentially two elements (just a whole bunch more of the no. 2 element!). I modified a Sweep Profile 3D and a Spiral 3D with a 1 and 2 column inflate.

The spiral was at 360 before I did the inflate. I then extended the large end by pulling out the end polys and divided it by using the edge loop function. I then deformed it more with the size, twist, and squeeze deformers.

The sweep gives the main body of the hair style and the spirals were then placed around the hair line. Using the Transpose tools and a very large move brush I was able to get nice fluidity to the smaller strands.

I plan on taking this a bit further by adding more strands and sculpting in more variety.

Starting the sword....... I'll be adding two intertwining serpents along the length of the handle to create the staff of Asclepius symbol within the sword. This is the base mesh from z-spheres, edge looped, then using polygroups and deformers I flattened certain planes of the sword. Swords.jpg

Great work ProCreator

I had missed this thread! Beautiful concept, and the deatails on the sword and wings are fantastic.

The figure is coming along nicely, too, and the pose is fantastically expressive - there is a problem with the legs joining the body though, here's an illustration:

comp2.jpg

The legs could possibly be a little thicker, too. The bone connects higher up at the hip. Here's a crappy mouse drawing I did to illustrate, don't treat it as absolute!

Anyway, hopefully you get my drift

Top work, and good luck with your progress :tu:

Thanks for the comments gang! Especially to you Petekasim for the time you took to illustrate the problem areas after transposing this model. I was hoping I would get a set of eyes on this that might pick up things I was oblivious to. Hopefully I'll have time later today to address those observations and move forward on this....... the clock is ticking folks!

Respectfully I have to bow out. My wife, who this character was based on, has become very ill. I plan on continuing with this concept as I feel it is very strong and helps me direct my negative feelings toward the illness she is fighting. Good luck to you all!
