Gra'Nox
Professional thief Nai Burrows went into hiding in a remote Pacific Island after a deal gone bad. At the climax of a lengthy chase, he found himself pinned down amongst the craggy ledges of an inactive Volcano by the Smugglers he double crossed. Nai was forced to surrender, only to be thrown into the inactive Volcano by the smugglers, without realising they stood in an ancient place of worship.
Rather than fall to his doom Nai's struggle was noticed by the dormant ancient spirit of the Island, awoken after thousands of years of sleep the angered spirit became pleased with its human sacrifice. The Volcano erupted suddenly and violently, immolating everyone close by as the elder god chose to pick Nai as its emissary into the world of modern man.
Through the smoke and flame, climbing out of the pits of the fiery Volcano, the anger of the Ancients made form; the granite Titan known as Gra'Nox was born.
Stone has replaced flesh and magma courses through his veins, possessing superhuman strength, unlimited endurance, and the ability to shape earth and project molten flame from his mouth, Gra'Nox is a high level threat, a near unstoppable behemoth who carries out the will of the ancients. An agent of chaos intent on bringing the end of technological age and casting the world back into the Cenozoic era.

Small update just trying to get as much out of the base mesh as possible, reckon I will need to add some extra edge loops to get a good polygon distribution so this mesh will hold up and I want to try avoiding retopoin the mesh….
Will post updated mesh soon

The base's looking very solid.. You character will be one amazing one.. :)
GregStrangis
01-11-09, 09:14 AM
Great base so far man, but for the rock detail and such it would probably be much easier for you to retopo, unless you can push your pc to 6-8mil polys :D

GregStrangis - I know what you mean, would like to try bypass topo but if I have to I will ...will see how it goes...

Haven’t had much time but will put in some work over next couple of days, been lookin at a bunch of ref for this guy like Kimbo, Brock Lesnar and some gymnastic stuff …to figure out how the muscles on the pecks and back would be placed
Other than that trying to get the main form correct and still need lay in some more blockin for the pose stage

01-17-09, 11:22 PM
Question, maybe its a dumb one but I'm still learning, how did you modify the topology in your base mesh?
I see in your Adaptive skin you added loops for the mouth and you changed the edge flow near the torso, how did you do that?
The model looks exactly like the sketch. Great job. I like the tension if the upper chest, the pectorals muscle. I think the more strenuous the arms and chest the better. Looks excellent.
Awesome (powerfull) sculpt!:tu: !

Have not had any time today and the update is small will put in work tonight if i dont pass out.
Still a couple muscles I want to fix before I start going crazy with rock.
wanted to add somthing to bring it to the present (was thinking some stupid stuff like lightpost, post box, ect) so I added an I-Beam to the base, this was also to set off his scale...simple but I think its works.
The base is kinda meant to be a piece of the Statue of Liberty but could not find a recognisable part that was in the same scale as base :p

Might look like small update but took forever ..... :(
hopefully now that I have settled on the rock ..the rest should go quicker ..hopefully
still need to add a slight noise pass to break up the larger areas.
Making the bottom half of legs and arms very dense clusters including the head and the rest of the sculpt will be larger blocks following muscle groups as close as poss.

Hey Deano - Good to have you around :) - Thx bro
1 - I used a set of alphas for the first pass of the rock from the gnomon site, this was a very light pass just to lay down a rough template Link - http://gnomonology.com/prod/19/25 (http://forums.thegnomonworkshop.com/member.php?u=28868) they free if you register - some dont work too well but there are some nice ones
2 - rock was mostly done by hand using the Claytubes brush too blockin and scrape.
Dam_ Standard Brush too pull out edges and cut into mesh.
Flat brush too add edges and kinda smooth...tried to avoid smoooth brush
3 - Time

this is full of win
based on technique and overall style this is the strongest piece i find
maybe you should think about the statue of liberty base.
it would add plenty to your sculpt and its not to unusual too play with scales
in comic books
i mean this standing on half of lady libertys face or maybe the hand holding the book.
keep it up:cool::tu::tu::tu::tu::tu:

Really nice endpiece!
At first you think hmm arent his legs a bit to normal
but looking at the model a bit longer they really look great.
I find it was a great design decision to just add the the spikes
on the shoulder head and arms and only very subtle on the upper leg.
Zbrush normally tends to produce too much detail and i think
you have nailed the ammount that still makes sense.
Trough only adding plates on the lower legs that move downwards
you have achieved a great feeling of gravity during the process
of becoming a lavalman.
It litteraly burst into him exploding out his head and arms in pure anger.
Heres the things i think could need tweaks.
The spikes on the head still have snakehook brush written on them.
Try to adjust them to the ones on the arms.
They have the feel of something hard the ones on the head
look like scales.. as if you could press them down.
The second thing is maybe a design choice.
The spike onfront of the base looks wrong i find.
It ends kinda round with not much supporting structure beneath it.
Also looks kinda flappy. I would definitly work on it a little.
The first base shot from above u posted before had a feeling of molten stone he stood on more.
Now its this hughe ledge. I get the point that it adds much to the dynamic.
Him standing infront of his battle ground split seconds before ge unlashes pure evil.
The only thing im thinking though is where the ledge comes from?
I see the bent t bar coming out and guessing its some manmade structure
hes has molten.
Maybe add some more indicators for it being manmade so that its easier to see.
anyways long talk heres the essence: aweeesoome :D

- Thx Guys really appreciated
Disco Stu - what can I say man your feed back has been great ...head is being tweaked atm
...agree a bit more TLC needed and thx for bringing up the ledge totally agree ..looks very floppy ...
will bolster it up, Glad you like the flat areas as well thought crumbled rock every where would have been over kill ...and killed me :D
The Ledge is meant to be a part of Liberty crumbled with city burning behind him .....
I also wanted to have some thing on the sculpt that was modern day ....
and the I beam fit the purpose and was nice and simple ...had some stupid ideas light post ..postbox  ...went with beam
Thx for taking the time for feedback :tu:

Thx Dudes :D
Update - been tightening up model all over ...trying to sharpen spikes but man they hard to control .
...pushed to 18mil now, which I think is insane and still able to sculpt smoothly...
just avoiding undo ...can take ages to refresh......not much time left

I feel ur pain on tweaking that.
18 mils is alot of polys to move.
So is the sculpt 1 mesh pushed to 18 mil?
I can go to about 8-10 without undo taking ages.
I guess you have 12 gigs of ram?
Anyways hit it hit it hit it !!! Nice matcap on that display btw.
I bet this one even works with the red standard crapmat  :tu:

Thx Dudes:D
Disco Stu - Thx man - Yup its 1 mesh excluding base, eyes and teeth....
was planning on keepin it at 4m but on my work pc it managed to cover the 18m ...if I had retopo I would have been able to manage getting the mesh to bout 10 ..which would have been fine.....but alls good :D

Impressive sculpt.. As I understand, not many programs can handle very high poly counts, so thinking about your 18 mil. sculpt, how are you going to bring that into another 3D application? (I'm a fresh new ZBrush user ;) )
