View Full Version : Action Hero - Debaser (Villain)

NAME: Matthew Board
Whew! I made the entry deadline! I grew up drawing super heroes, so this is a real treat! If not for comics, I would probably never have become an artist.

After some thought... here is my concept.
Her name is Debaser.

Definition of Debase-
de·base Pronunciation: \di-ˈbās, dē-\ Function:transitive verb Date:1565 1: to lower in status, esteem, quality, or character
2 a: to reduce the intrinsic value of (a coin) by increasing the base-metal content b: to reduce the exchange value of (a monetary unit)
— de·base·ment \-ˈbās-mənt\ noun
— de·bas·er \-ˈbā-sər\ noun

Debaser is the name of this automaton for hire. An experimental prototype of the Corporation. The Corporation had intended to use her and potential copies for espionage and stealth wetwork ops, but the plan went awry after her first mission went too well. The Corporation tried to terminate her, but failed. It is still rumored how Debaser gained her actual autonomy from the Corporation. After these events, the Corporation gave her the internal, top secret code name: Debaser. She answers to the name H.E.R.A (Humanoid Electronic Reconnaissance Arbiter)

Debaser views the world through an amoral lens and has a particular distaste for humans. If the price is right, and the target is meant to harm humanity...Debaser will take the job.

Powers-
Debaser's armor is a Tungsten alloy that also consists of solar panels.
Debaser has been built with stealth, agility, efficiency and ruthlessness in mind. Her intelligence is much higher than most humans. One of her strongest traits is her corporate savvy.
Why call her Debaser? Most of the data and information that she gleans from her missions is retained as leverage against her employers. Usually, her employers receive tainted or changed intelligence from her. She views it as part of her mission toterminate all humans.
The Corporation is aware of Debaser's misgivings, but will not reveal her actions to anyone .

Well, I have the base for the body armor, legs and helmet.
I extracted the high res mesh and retopo'd it. This is my first time working with the retopo tools, I still need some practice with it.
On the right is a wip shot of the retopo process. On the left is the finished geo for the armor.

Colors and materials are temporary.

fluxist8070
01-09-09, 10:51 AM
I have finished the base for the arms. Same process as before. Extracting high res subtools and retopologizing them. Next, it is time for the hands and the feet. It is going to be nice to sculpt soon!

fluxist8070
01-10-09, 05:15 PM
The geo around the anlke, foot and hand are not sculpting out very clean so I am in the process of changing the edge flow... still not very pretty...but once I dubdivide it, I should get cleaner sculpting.

Very Expressive Concept and Sculpt!

fluxist8070
01-11-09, 05:58 PM
THanks Hauss!
Here is what I have...I did much more today but I lost most of it when trying to render. No one's fault but my own...

So, i finished the retopo...finished the base for the hands.next step is to start sculpting.
I am going to take a small break and come back to it.

Very nice concept (and I love the name).
One strong element of the concept design has changed a bit though and it's those shoulder guards, they have lowered and changed angle so that now they are in the way of the character raising the arms.
Other then that great job so far and excellent fast paced progress.

SolidSnakexxx

Looking good so far. and it seems you have already gone through the fun Retopology process :)

thanks guys!
Max-thanks for the feedback, I will address.
Solid-It is really addicting...I had to stop myself. at first it seems tedious and the next thing you know you are making custom geometry. Pretty cool stuff!
Will post more soon!

Here is what I am thinking about for the armor style.
Villain's usually take multiple beatings, so I wanted to have an organized patch pattern for the armor.

I have worked up the breastplate to the same level as the head.

SolidSnakexxx
01-12-09, 06:48 PM
Looking good so far... just a quick question how many poly is it for the head when you do the poly painting.. As I think it can get lot crisper when you are at higher level of subdiv. Look forward for more. :)

fluxist8070
01-12-09, 07:59 PM
THanks Solid,

It's funny, because i just ramped up the armor to subD-7 before reading this.
You are right, it does need to be crisper.
thanks!

fluxist8070
01-14-09, 08:28 AM
Still plugging away here.
I have the armor for the head, torso and legs worked up to a pretty decent level. I still have to add some color and sculpting to them to get rid of the symmetry.

Gohanf22

your armor that your making for her is very nice indeed. i love it. i do agree with everyone else. she is to slim. i had that same problem but now ive gotten better with proportions. keep up the good work. :D

neet idea, i hope you go to town with the armour. looking forward to seeing this one.

fluxist8070
01-17-09, 10:51 AM
Here is the next direction for the armor as shown on the helmet. I like that the marks look like runes, or maybe how an unstable robot might decorate itself, but I am not married to the idea....
I also thickened up the overall figure and added some intense blue to the body. "I think she looks better with a little meat on her bones!"

SolidSnakexxx
01-17-09, 06:56 PM
I do like the new design better, the older one I think the red pattern's a bit distracting.. but this one hold the integrity well. Look forward to the pose design now :)

fluxist8070
01-17-09, 08:36 PM
Here is where I am with the armor detailing. I still need to do the arm braces. I am doing what I can to "break up and add interest to the larger shapes. To me, it seems like the character might have an obsessive streak with reinforcing/adorning her armor. SolidSanke, thanks for the feedback! i appreciate it. I hope to pose soon!

Practicing with transpose master.
1.jpg

fluxist8070
01-19-09, 10:31 AM
Here is my status. I started using transpose master and I had some problems
I made sure to turn colorize off of all subtools and each subtool was at its highest subd level. The first time I tried to apply the pose the forearm bracers exploded. I tried it again and the second time the bands on the upper arms exploded. I am not sure why that happened. So, I kept the second pose and re-appended the arm bands and moved them into position. Overall, it was not too much of a problem.
I have also started on the pedastal. I was going for an alabaster material. I tweaked Basic Material2 to get it. I still need to mess with it. I think I will try to get more of a raw tungsten ore material so that it fits with the concept better. This is not the final pose, I just wanted to do a test, to get an ideal of what I am up against with the transpose master issues...and I still need to refine the hands more than I have.

SolidSnakexxx
01-19-09, 06:39 PM
The model's coming along really wonderfully. As for the explosion...does it happen while in transpose..or when you have exited the transpose process? If it happen while you are transposing, could it be there's some mask left on the area you wish to transpose? Ummm...cause sometimes it's pretty tough to spot the gray mask.

fluxist8070
01-19-09, 07:02 PM
Thanks Solid, No, it explodes when I "apply" the pose all the subtools. You're right, it is tough to see the masks sometimes...

maxinkuk
01-20-09, 06:28 PM
I think that there proportions on the legs need further attention.
My opinion is that the lower part of the legs are a bit too short and the thighs instead are slightly too long and moving the knees a bit up could be the solution. The pose is really good but I wonder if those fingers could be also posed in some more interesting way.

fluxist8070
01-20-09, 07:08 PM
gohan, thanks. I will be fiddling. :D
skullbeast, thanks. the shoulder pad does look awkward.
solid, Thanks! and she is getting there ;)
max, thanks for the feedback. I agree with you about the legs. And, yes I plan to give the hands some attention. I want to make the higher hand look more sultry and I want the lower to look more ruthless.

thanks again for all of the feedback!

fluxist8070

I made suggested changes. I am still not completely happy with the hands. The lighting is a key, fill, and rim light. the key light has shadow with zmode. When we do the final render, I wonder if we can use the 2.5d brushes?
Here is a quick time lapse of me posing the hands.(26 seconds)
thanks for looking!

fluxist8070
01-21-09, 07:36 PM
Well, after posing, I sculpted the finger and hands a bit more because they were looking a little lame....now they look less lame.
I have also been tweaking lights. Now it is time for bed. (Actually, it is time for some Call of Duty and the bed. :p )

Wow! I enjoyed viewing your process from the initial sketch (which is awesome) to the current stage (which is awesome too). The character has nice proportions and form. Textures and materials are pretty nice as well. I think some variation in reflectivity would indicate dirt, oil, water...a little better. The pose is well balance and engaging. I'm impressed.

Keep it up!

maxinkuk
01-22-09, 06:43 AM
She looks really scary. I like it very much. :tu:

I like what the way you posed the right hand but I'm not so sure about her left one though, I think that a more straightforward "bird of prey" pose, less sophisticated but of more readable could enhance the overall impact.
At present my eyes linger on that hand trying to understand what it's saying. It's possible that if it was more readable a viewer would appreciate more the whole of the sculpt.

fluxist8070
01-22-09, 07:39 AM
elliott, thanks for the feedback, I will look at the materials.
max, it seems that sultry is difficult to express when the fingertips are blades. I will make another attempt at the hand. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks again for taking a look! I thought about doing more of a diving pose with open hands..."Wolvie-style." I am going to try one more pose and then if that does not work, then I will stick with the first one. After looking more at the second pose, I am not quite sure what was going on there:p

Hey man,

This is sweet. The character sculpt, textures, rendering and pose look very convincing. I think the pose and fog still needs tweaking.

The front foot seems a bit twisted for the direction and momentum of Debaser.

The back foot looks like its not really in contact with the ground. Because of the degree of articulation in the ball joint I would expect it to pushing off a solid object.

If I play the action forward in my mind, I think Debaser would trip. Her front foot is so far ahead & lower than of the rear. When her rear comes forward her foot drags.

The fog looks a little 2d. Because of the wispy nature of your fog there would be turbulence trails behind the moving figure.

Then again it is all in my mind ;)

The turntable is looking good. I like seeing the whole form. The pose and ground environment are working better.

Hi def is looking good too. When I see her head up close I wonder how did she get her head in there. Is their a seem? The same goes for the articulating joints on the hand and foot. Are they metal or metallic stretchy material.

luis, thanks for the feedback, I will take a look at lightening up the material.

elliott, thanks, yes her joints are synthetic stretchy material of some kind. That is what's under the armor. BTW, are you ever going to update your dragon blog?

Elliott Mitchell

Yes. Around lunch time. I was just thinking of posting on ZBC too. I'll do that at lunch too.

I am trying to adjust the materials on the armor and have done some experimenting to get something a lighter and shinier. Did i go to far?
I did a gel render here. I messes with the metalicity, specular, ambient etc. and got something close to a vector shader. It reminded me of comic book inking and coloring so I stopped there.
1.jpg

To adjust the reflected light, I used a jellybean material. I dod not mess with it's settings.
2.jpg

Then i composited them on top of a render with the metal01 material and I have this-

I also added some extra details to the armor and body.

The shaders change everything.

Nice detailing.

Nice tests, I am more ad admirer of matte rendering in general, brush steel, rather than chrome, so I like the second one more.

here is where I am with the material. You can see detail in the darks! I will probably still do some compositing though...

resinNocolor.jpg Well, Work has picked up, but I was able to get some work in today.
I fixed the foot, made some small tweaks to the head and body.
I also changed the left foot. The flat footed looked a bit static to me so I changed it. I am also working on the light setup.
Here are some pics. I think I am ready to make my final renders and do some compositing.

Very good pose. I think you can consider this a definite. Are you also settled on materials? I think that the base and the character could have different qualities.

Very nice work! Great pose. I like the render but the lighting seems to make it difficult to see some of the nice colours you put in there.

fluxist8070
02-01-09, 09:37 AM
Captain Sensible: Thanks for the kind words. You make a good point about the lighting. Hopefully I can get some more with the 2.5d brushes and compositing.....?

Pitchpuck: Thanks! I appreciate it!

Max: Thanks! I agree the base is really different from the character. I'll see what i can do about that. I think I am going to pull different renders with different materials and light setups and composite in photoshop with blending layers.

Gohan: Thanks! I appreciate the support!

Ivar: Thanks!

Nacho: Thanks for your comment!

Solid: As always, thank you. I appreciate your comments.

I am going to get some work in today before the super bowl. GO Cardinals!

The sculpt and pose are are both very nice. It's hard to say if I'm sold on the render with the materials. I have no doubt you'll get it looking spectacular.

I've been crashing zbrush while getting the lighting and rendering to look decent. Let me know how you do it!

Your combination of material, sculpting and colour really makes this piece pop. I love the pose too.

fluxist8070

Elliott,
thanks. Something that helped me was to not let the best render option automatically update whenever i change a light. I take a render, scrutinize and then go back to preview, change the light and then hit the best render button again. That way zbrush doesn't freak out. For this render, I have 4 lights...2 keys, one reflected and one rim. Try tweaking the diffuse curve on your shader. Huge change in lighting from that. Then, render on best with shadows, softz and depth cue turned on. Depth cue settings are set at default with a softness of 2. Some of them have soft rgb turned on. Irecommend turning down the blur. i just bought the digital tutors dvd on this subject....between hat and tuts on the web, I have learned alot about it....I haven't used maya or xsi for weeks now....

gregoconn, thanks! I appreciate your opinion!

Here is where I am with compositing. I made passes of a couple of differend "Metallic" Materials to get this look. Right now, I have about 9 blending layers and a layer mask.

Here is an update. I think I am going to try another new pose since Solitudinal is right, it looks like she just threw a 7, 10 split:eek:
After compositing, I brought the image back into zBrush to do some 2D painting.

hey there nice work.
but...
u really need to chekc out the rear hand.
it looks brutally wrong.
if hed close that hand the tumb wouldnt be hidden by the other fingers it would be above them.
that shouldnt happen without a car accident or so.
maybe its a perspective thing but you should check it out.

Matt,

I dare say this is amazing. You did a great job on all aspects of this character. The sculpt / pose are solid gold. The poly painting is very detailed and believable. Does she have UV's? The rendering and lights are great. Are you going to eventually rig and animate her? It would be awesome.:tu::tu::tu::tu::tu:

Max, Thanks!
discostu, thanks, I have taken a close look at the thumb.
Elliott, BIG thanks!
Moni peroni, thanks too!

I am rendering out images for my final render. Ichanged the pose just a tad so that it doesn't look so much like a bowling follow thru. (Of course, after that image is stuck in your head, it is hard not to perceive a bowler.)
thanks to everyone who is checking in!:D
